February 11th, 1990. I was 9, Mike Tyson was a superhero, a comic book character come to life. I was at my Grandmom’s while she was at Bingo and my Mom and my future Stepdad were on a date (kids weren’t so protected back then). I will never forget sitting on the couch in disbelief. I tried calling my Dad while the fight was going on but he was likely out as well so I kept calling my Uncle at the end of each round past maybe 4 or 5 to make sure he was seeing what I was. When Tyson dropped Douglas a huge sense of relief flowed over me, all was right with the world and Iron Mike had done it again. Then Douglas got up (still one of the gutsiest moves I’ve ever seen), comes out and dominates rd9 and then makes history in rd10. I cried, my hero had just been obliterated while I watched in real time and that’s a hell of a blow for a 9 yr old kid. Almost 35 years later and I feel it was a privilege to see that fight. At the end of the day, we are all human, even those of us who seem to be beyond that. For all those who say Tyson wasn’t himself, had horrible trainers and cornermen (he did, even I knew as a child that a glove full of water wasn’t helping with the swelling), that may be so but it doesn’t matter. Most fighters had lost the minute they actually saw Tyson across the ring from them. Douglas put on a performance for the ages and to this day I feel it is the single biggest upset in Sports history outside of the Miracle on Ice. What a fight, what a night.
Me n my father watched this fight.....the night of. We saw boxing history. We were blown away.....I lost my father a little while later....God bless you dad...And I love you.
Not only one of the most memorable moments in all of sports history, but also a very inspirational moment, in and out of sports , for generations to come

I watched it with my Dad too. The fight wasn't even pay per view, it was on HBO, which was kind of rare for a heavyweight championship. I remember how the excitement built as the fight went on and we saw that Douglas had a chance.

I was so upset when Tyson lost. I just watched this for the first time. If I saw this live back in the day...man! A man that fights for his mom... he is going to win! He did just that. Now watching this, I'm so happy he won. Totally deserves this win and being champion.
The person who wrote this comment is delusional..saying that Douglas was the deserving winner ya kidding me right ,look wen an individual who gets knocked down and then the referee gives a ten count oops!! Wait a minute im sorry it was a 13 count”!!!😮😮 well look that individual is not the deserved winner I’m sorry i don’t care how sad the individuals backstory is but Douglas did not win plain and simple and clear cunt…..
I watched a man fight in front of his entire family for a belt, he was actually knocked out within the first 10 seconds of the first round. It was wild
Seeing this again, i noticed a few things very early in the match that were telltale signs of what was to come. First, Douglas was using near perfect lateral movement in the ring, therefore not giving Tyson a stationary target. Second, Douglas did something that no one else had done against Tyson. He established his jab, and it was a hard, snapping, accurate jab that scored points and set Douglass's range for the ensuing combinations. And when Tyson tried to launch an attack, Douglas was able to smother it out in the clinches with his size and strength. Which would wear down Tyson in the later rounds. Douglass's performance that night in Tokyo was literally boxing 101 on display.
Spot on comment. It's almost as if Tyson was unprepared to compete against larger opponents who was exhibiting sound boxing skills as opposed to an opponent who was cowering in fear. Once the intimidation factor wore off, Tyson was extremely vulnerable
@@fishbone3333 it was only this case where he couldn't do it because he came in unprepared Tyson beat many solid opponents without any intimidation factor same can be said for ali ali was extremely vulnerable when his trash talk and media hype fact was worn off he got whooped straight without that

You could tell Douglas wasn't scared of Tyson like most of his previous opponents. Not saying that's the main reason he won, but that factor undoubtedly contributed a bit to his victory.
Buster Douglas mom died before the fight and before she died she told her friends that Buster would beat Tyson. But Buster Douglas dad Bill Dynamite Douglas was the same type of fighter Tyson was.so he had plenty of experience training Buster back in the day

@@jimhacker6983 right, when the going got tough, Tyson mentally and emotionally crumbled. I think his early career of fighting the old Holmes era were soft touches for him and he was spoiled. He was so media hyped that he actually bought into the hype himself. But as soon as the 90's came along, so did the better competition and when those fighters didnt go along with the media hyped script of just laying down and surrendering before the bell rang, Tyson had a real fight on his hands and we saw the results. People say Tyson was out of his prime, he was 23 when he fought Douglas, Tyson didnt get worse, his competition got better.

I remember this night.. I was in shock watching it then... and 34 years later... I'm still in shock watching it now... the greatest upset in sports history...
If you read the details of this bout, before and after it, you'd realized that Douglas never was to Tyson's level. A number of factors led to Tyson's loss.
Knowing Buster lost his mom recently before this fight was a motivation on another level. He was fighting through grief, but also trying to win for his mom! 👏👏👏
🎯 . I was 10 yrs old when this happened and I still remembered it and I cried when Tyson lost. I thought it was impossible for him to lose. Buster had nothing to lose and he was going to fight to his death.
In Bobby Brown’s memoir he said”Mike and I were out partying until around 4am and I said Mike don’t you have a fight today? You need to get some sleep. Mike said don’t worry this guy is a tomato can. I’ll knock him out in 3 rounds.” Mike ended up getting some sleep alright…😴🥊
@@patrickhunt6055 No need for excuses, anyone who knows boxing and understands Mike's style knows Mike was in no shape to be fighting here. Douglas looked good cause Tyson came in totally unprepared as much as you may not wanna hear that. It's not excuses, it's reality. He's obviously totally out of shape here whether you like it or not. Mike had to be at his absolute worst whilst Douglas at his best to Douglas to win. It is what it is.
58.50 buster Douglas giving a clean head kick to mike tyson, both Douglas and Holyfield won the match by just fucking him up with their frontal bones 🦴.
@@erickjoseph65 Dude...Tyson couldn't box....he was just a hard punching fighter. When he came across heavyweights with actual boxing skills, he was defeated. Lennox Lewis, the greatest heavyweight of the post-Ali-Frazier-Foreman era is OLDER than Tyson and knocked him out. And Tyson lost to Holyfield twice. Did Tyson defeat anyone who is now considered great? Or even good? The Tyson mystique was built on a bunch of mediocre boxers.
I have to say after watching the rise and fall of Mike Tyson's boxing career, I am pleasantly surprised at his successful life after boxing. It's a credit to his tenacity. And hats off to Buster for winning it all for Momma! It really is inspiring how he channeled his personal loss into such a beautiful victory in her honor!
Why people are shocked that Douglas won is because boxing has a reputation of being "dirty". Big money wasn't on Mike that night? We'll never know. Douglas did look like it the real deal in that fight. I don't want to take anything away from Douglas, he outboxes Mike fair & square.
Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson to the punch and completely smothered him. This was a man that lost his mom 3 weeks before the fight, his son's mom got diagnosed with a kidney disease, and he struggled with stamina issues. He was on penicillin all through the camp. Kudos to Douglas.
Douglas losing his mom may have contributed 1% to his victory, but 99% of it was due to Tyson being completely unprepared and off his game. Anyone could be beaten when they aren’t focused, even Mike Tyson.
"Mike Tyson has been knocked out"..great line by Lampley in its simplicity as Tyson getting knocked out was such a far fetched idea at the time. One of the greatest upsets in sports history and all credit to Buster.
The irony is I've seen him get quite emotional when talking about Gatti ward and Hagler Hearns, yet here he Cooley says " Mike Tyson has been knocked out" calm as you like,a line never forgotten in one of if not biggest upsets in boxing history.
I remember watching this when I was 21 on HBO.This was insane I never seen ANY fighter land the hits, combinations as clean and hard on Tyson as this. And seeing him hit the deck was unreal.Tyson was an unbeatable beast up to this point
Tyson was my childhood hero, I remember watching this fight and crying when he lost. Now as an adult and learning what a story behind it all. Buster saying he went all in for his mother that had just passed. These are the moments that shock the world. Awesome!
I was 16 when this fight took place. I didn't watch it live, but my dad's friend came over the following day to see my dad. I remember he said to me, "Hey, did you see that fight last night?" I asked, "What fight??" He says, "Oh, you didn't hear?!? Mike Tyson got knocked out last night by Buster Douglas!". I was in total disbelief, literally. I thought he must be talking about a different Mike Tyson. He had to keep telling me, "Yes....THE Mike Tyson, heavyweight champion of the world, lost, got knocked out." It was just so totally unbelievable at that time. It took a full day for it to fully sink in for me that Mike Tyson lost and got knocked out.
I don't think it was lack of faith in Douglas. Tyson had never been hurt in the ring before. Most people thought he was indestructible. When Tyson briefly got rocked by Douglas in the 5th round, that was shocking. That had never happened to Tyson before. That's when I really started thinking Douglas might win. There will NEVER be a bigger upset in boxing than this one.
Buster Douglas’s movement in this fight was incredible, the way he stepped in with a perfect jab then immediately stepping out the danger zone, beautiful.

One of the most brilliant boxing upsets, driven by spirit, motivation, and knowledge of how to neutralize your opponent's strengths. Buster's apotheosis.
I'm not taking nothing away from buster or the skill/effort/game plan BUT you can definitely see from the beginning that Tyson wasn't really in that ring and wasn't there to win. The whole commentary was like a foreshadowing of what was going on and what was to come
@@kylemiller6606 Tyson WAS there to win, but he had become the victim of his own reputation as a destroyer. He was there to win a fight a collect a paycheck. Buster put all his tools together this night. He was never really able to do this before or since, but this night he looked like an all-time great. The jab, the combinations, the movement, the power, it was all there.
@Pacific Palisades 83 Buster was leading for most of the fight. He got in too close near the end of the eighth and got caught with a Tyson uppercut. Then he recovered to win in the tenth.
I made so much money on this fight. I love Tyson. Once he hooked up with DON "THE DEVIL" KING he wouldn't be the same. His new trainers changed h8s style, convincing him to rely on his incrediblepunching power, ROBIN "THE HARLET" GIVENSmessed his mind up, King indulged him with any and every decadence, salacious, carnal, gluttonous pleasure. He always had trouble with fighters who could land punches on him.
My father had been sparring and weight lifting when he was young. He had a extreme hard natural punch. When I was a child, I always thougt, he was the strongest man alive. But he alway said, even the strongest man in the world will someday face his master. Everytime I watch this fight, I remember my daddys words.
@Streetlife361;you SAID it man!! In November 2001while a Detroit firefighter who smoked from sunrise to 4 a.m,I was stationed near downtown at Engine Company 5 when we recieved a report of passers-by seeing amber lights flickering from the top floor of a 20 story apartment tower!! I thought:"There hasn't been a high-rise fire downtown since 1982 when some dude tried to kill his lawyer by pouring gas on his desk and lighting it on the 23rd floor of the Buhl Building so this has got to be a false alarm!!" But as we reached Woodward Avenue from Larned and I looked north, there WAS indeed an amber light flickering from the 20th floor window!! I was STILL smoking on the outside of the rig on my "jumpseat"when we reached the front door, and threw the cigar into my bunker-pants pocket to finish it after I doused the blaze, then I yelled at people to clear a path, ran inside, hit the stairwell like a ROCKET and TOLD myself I would NOT run short on breath, but PUSHED myself to attain the 20th floor wearing a heavy fire-coat,fire-pants,boots and heavy oxygen tank on my BACK!! On my way up,I passed 3 firefighters who didn't smoke or drink heavily, like I did,and at the top floor,my sergeant and I looked at the door waiting on the backup which would never COME!! He walked back to the stairwell door, looked down the stairs, then listened intently before walking back through the door with:You might as well take that door man;I don't hear nobody ELSE coming up those stairs."So with lungs filled with smoke.I WILLED myself up TO the top floor!!
If you consider how much shorter Mike Tyson was than most of his opponents and how he used his small reach to his advantage in a league that had previously been dominated by long reach, you can see quite a will.
Can't believe it's been 30 years. Man, time files. It seems like only yesterday, me and John Mark were at my house to watch Mike Tyson knock out this Buster Douglas guy in a round or two, when a fight broke out. I remember Mom coming to check on the commotion when Buster got knocked down, with me and Eddie yelling at the television for him to get up; and then again, two rounds later when Mike was fumbling around on the canvas trying to find his mouthpiece, only to put it in backwards. Great night......one I'll never forget. Also, props to Larry Merchant for the best post fight interview I've ever seen. He knew what he had in front of him and kept pushing for that "moment" which reflected the magnitude of the event. Overall, just a great memory I'm glad to have.
I didn't get to see this live. I was a big fan of boxing as a kid and also a fan of Iron Mike. When I read the early edition of the sports section and saw that he lost to "Buster" Douglas, my 13 year old self was devastated and could not believe. Insane that Mike is trying to put on a comeback at 53... he looks ferocious and good for him to regain that fire and turning his life around.
Wow. Thanks for uploading. I didn't remember this fight being this one-sided. Buster is dominating every round, except one. His footwork is excellent, his left jab is great, combinations are fantastic. He came to fight, that night. Tyson seems out of it, like he doesn't wanna be there, no movement, walking into combinations, throwing one punch at a time.. The ref did his job, the count when Douglas went down was not strange. In the next round the ref actually keeps Tyson in the fight, when Buster has him backed up against the ropes, and Tyson looks about to fall. Then comes round ten, and just textbook jabs and combinations from Douglas, the devastating uppercut, and finally that very last left jab or cross on Mike's way down to the floor...Man, that's a killer.. This was boxing history, sports history and just history. Boxing was changed forever. Wow.
Kinda looked like tyson didnt train or he didnt rest he didnt look like his normal self in this fight but uknow round these times the mob was tied into boxing so maybe just like today he didnt take a dive but just promised to go all rounds & not win at all
Buster was looking crisp af. Fast, accurate and snappy punches throughout all 10 rounds. Edit: to all the Mike Tyson fanboys in the comments... the better fighter won that night, simple as. Mike got beat fair and square so stop pulling out excuses 31 years later.
@@mauricio1315ify I agree Mike was not 100% like the commentators said he was static, not moving his head and upper body like he usually does for whatever reason and thats why he had to tank all those hits, that said even if he was it would have been close Douglas was really strong that day

I'll never forget this fight. I remember Lampley and Leonard commenting that it was a Saturday Morning in Japan so the fight could be shown live in the US on Friday Night. Tyson was so feared at this point in his career and Douglas was a boxer with potential, but could never finish. It was apparent early into the fight Tyson was off and Douglas would fight, the fight of his life! It was so exciting to see Tyson get knocked out and obviously his career never recovered. Two years later going to prison and many personal demons to battle. I am glad to hear Tyson has found peace and appears to be happy these days.
Fight was on Sunday afternoon in Tokyo for a Saturday Night HBO telecast. I had been out working a wrestling tournament as a media representative all day(mainly to avoid paying to get in, I was cheap that way LOL) and was home in time to see this fight on HBO.
I watched it live and was getting my father out of bed in the middle of the night and I was jumping up and down like crazy. It was a tremendous performance by Douglas, he had great footwork, head movement, jab, and speed to his punches and good variety, used his strength, size and reach well... Tyson was tough and brave as he was taking a lot of big shots. Great upload, as we need to here all the context of the build up. It would be good to see the live British Sky coverage of the fight.
My friends and I watched this live and laughed at Tyson’s totally unprepared trainers. They didn’t even have anything for his swollen eye. Looks like they made something on the spot for it.
Cause they underestimated Douglas, they thought Tyson would have easily knock Douglas out in the early rounds, they didn't need to bring anything for him.
I'll never forget my brother telling me in the morning that Tyson lost. I was shocked, and then saddened. I love Mike. He was an animal in his prime. SO exciting to watch. ❤💔
Douglas had fought on all the Tyson undercards from 86 to 89 so he had seen Tyson alot and wasn't intimidated like others plus he used his height and reach to perfection .
Buster was in control of this fight from start to finish. Even when he got knocked down he slammed his fist to the mat in disgust. The only real mistake he made that fight but it also gave Tyson a false sense that he'd finally taken control of the fight.

Almost as if he expected the clock to strike midnight. He was disgusted with the knockdown because he knew he was blowing it, but he still came out in the next round and was givin the fight away. It wasn't until late in the 9th when he decided to stop being a loser and go for broke.
@@zorankostur Liar! Douglas was following the referee’s count and rightly got up before he reached ten. At worst, he picked up the count only one second late, but the point is the fighter that has been decked has to follow the finger count of the REFEREE, not some numpty like you, who was not involved in the action.
52:52 the count is slightly slower than the outside ring count clearly. But Douglas was aware of where he was and was tired. He used the count to get a rest and the ref in the ring saw that. He wasn’t out of it or unaware like Tyson, he was just exhausted and was taking a mid fight rest before the bell sounded.
When Douglas went down he pound the ring with his first at the count of two and it was apparent he could have gotten up at that point. He waited, like you said.
@@steelerfreak1977 I agree it looks good, anything that keeps hitting the target looks good, but watch this fight again, & try not to watch Buster, just watch Mike; he was never this easy to hit until the Lewis fight over a decade later; Buster had this robotic, deliberate way of throwing punches, he pumps his arm idly before throwing a jab, which wastes a lot of time; against Mike in Tokyo he got away with it, cuz Mike didn’t move; against Holyfield, he tried throwing the same jab, but it almost never connected, cuz Evander saw the double-pump and moved out of range, like many others did against Buster - Buster was his fastest ever in this fight, because of being 20 lbs lighter, but I still say this fight is at least 60% about Mike sucking; don’t get me wrong, I hate Tyson, I was dying for him to lose, & I’m thrilled for Buster, a genuinely good man, that he had this moment in the sun - but let’s get real, he wasn’t a great fighter, he fought his best fight against a champ who was a chump, especially that night! Kinda like how Floyd Patterson won the title against Archie Moore, & when he had to fight someone great, he wasn’t good enough, he & Buster belong in the same box, & they were both hella good dudes
Three lessons in life to be gleaned from this fight and Buster Douglas's performance: 1) Play to your strengths. Douglas was taller and had the reach advantage on Mike- he kept Mike at jab distance or tied him up inside, shutting down Mike's lethal uppercuts save for that one in the 8th. 2) Control the tempo. Douglas dictated the pacing of every round and his energetic footwork made him seem like a circling shark compared to Tyson. Once Douglas got a couple of those gnarly left-right-left combos in early, Tyson's head movement all but disappeared, and once his left eye swelled shut, he was done. 3) Stick to your guns. Douglas was ready to go all 12 rounds, and I'm not sure if he would have even quit then. He truly did fight with heart and he gave every ounce of himself in the ring.
4) Don’t come to a fight unprepared. Your first three mean nothing. This fight was lost not because Douglas was a good boxer, but because Tyson was unprepared.
Douglas boxed a beautiful fight. Every time mike got in range he touched him with the jab and threw punches in combinations which made it harder for Tyson to counter didn’t let tyson get into a rhythm. . And yea Tyson May have not been in his best shape but it was good enough because buster was catching him with solid punches and to stay in there for 10 rounds means Tyson was in some kinda shape if it was bad shape Douglas would’ve got Tyson out of there earlier. Mentally Tyson expected an easy fight n that’s what hurt him.

Despite the long odds, he somehow put everything together in a brilliant match against what people at the time said was an unstoppable force and he changed boxing history because of it.

Because this is the first time Tyson lost, it is easy to overlook just how good Douglas was in Tokyo. He moves beautifully, tee-ing off with the jab. Supreme lateral movement., near - perfect balance. He is landing very powerful, damaging blows from the very beginning. This is one of the best displays of Boxing I have ever seen.
Right. as everyone can see, Douglas was perfectly prepared, he countered everything that made Tyson dangerous. He didn't wait and react, he punched first and hit first, he was a split second faster in almost every action, he did not stop after he landed a punch etc. Tyson became more and more a stationary target from round 5 on (which of course was uncharacteristic for him) but it was NOT because there were 3 ladies in his bedroom the night before (as some are claiming), it was because Tyson had to take countless heavy punches from Douglas in that fight so far. Tyson was outclassed because Douglas was incredible.
But compare the count when tyson went down to the count douglas went down not the same. Plus douglas was hitting while they ref breaks them like a stealing punch.

I believe two things can be true, Douglas fought a BEAUTIFUL fight that also coincided with Tyson’s clear lack of training and conditioning. even the commentators point it out the absence of his signature hooks to the body, his head movement was inconsistent, he was extremely slow with his counters during exchanges.

I watched this whole thing when it was live. My dad let me stay up and watch it together. Unbelievable that this actually happened. Quite the indelible memory.
Part of the reason why Tyson was as badass as he was was not only his ability to intimidate, but the fact he was very difficult to hit on top of hitting as hard as he did. Dude almost never stops moving. Thing is, neither did Douglas in this match. He kept Tyson either at a distance or tied up, playing the match his way the entire time rather than Tyson's way. He was completely in control of his side of the fight, projected the image of a boxer who knew everything there was to know about his opponent's fighting style, and was ready to counter it.
@@bobber0623 ...Michael Gerard Tyson was definitely responsible for his youthful errors. The latter knew all about Don King's track record. Tyson is a grown man.
@Your Neighbor use your brain. He didn't train, he didn't even care to watch buster fight others, both of his OG trainers were gone, left with a greedy scumbag who basically told him all the wrong things so he could get money, and trust me, he did. It was Tyson's downfall, and you can't take away from Buster's victory, but you still gotta look at the facts.
Watching Douglas fight this fight always makes my hair stand on edge. On that night Buster displayed a true masterclass effort, and any heavyweight in the long history of professional boxing could have fallen to Douglas then and there.
Douglas was no joke. At his best, I think he was better than Tyson and Holyfield. I wish Douglas had trained seriously for the Holyfield fight, I think Douglas would have beaten him pretty easily with that left jab. Holyfield never had good defensive skills, he took a lot of punches.
Tokyo Douglas would've been a problem for anyone in the last 70 years of heavyweight boxing. It's too bad the depression over his mom sank in once the high of winning this fight wore off. He clearly showed up in Vegas for the Holyfield fight for a payday.

It’s overstated but there’s truth in it. Tyson wasn’t intimidated of Douglas and he also didn’t believe he could be beaten. When he fought Evander it was different.
@TheRealC.T. later in his career yes. But the myth has been created that he always gave up when someone fought back(and the implication being that he only won because people were intimidated). To Don't Worry: I recall that day when Warner Wolf from WABC Television in NY, stopped predicting the number of rounds for Douglas, but the number of punches: He speculated five punches.
Douglas had occasionally shown flashes of brilliance before. But nothing like this. He just transcended everything in his prior history. Physically he was in better shape than ever before and mentally he was a whole new person.

Three lessons in life to be gleaned from this fight and Buster Douglas's performance:
1) Play to your strengths.

Right. as everyone can see, Douglas was perfectly prepared, he countered everything that made Tyson dangerous. The magnitude of this fight cannot be put into words. I watch it about once a year and I'm always stunned lol
Should've been watching closer buddy 52:49 - 53:00 Tyson won
@@xBE4STCLAN ...No, he didn't! Douglas beat Tyson, fair and square. The latter had taken the former for granted, and paid the ultimate price for it, PERIOD!!! It's been thirty-three years, now! Get over it!!!
That's what makes sports so entertaining. " any underdog can beat on a good night & anyone great can get beaten in a bad night."
Max lost money, take it easy on a sore loser.😅
I love the water balloon. Really shows preparation from the passengers in Tyson's corner.
Tyson aint do a lick of training for this fight 😂

@@cone78omdiaco21 lmao he could have been the greatest by far so easily because what kind of boxer do you know thats prime is from 18 to 23 years old? It’s so obvious if you just look at his career when he stopped giving a shit about boxing because of cus dying and losing everyone close to him. If we would have stayed on the same path and developed even more he would have wooped holyfield, lennox lewis, everyone. But of course all of that shit was his own fault when he chose don king over kevin rooney like a dumbass but still had a phenomenal career. Youngest heavyweight champ👑
@@difuzedbirdy8813 Tyson was finished at 23 after Buster pulverised him and never fought anyone good aferwards until he got his arse kicked by washed up Holy and old Lennox. Mercer, Tua and especially crazy Ike would have killed him. Bowe at his best as well.
@@difuzedbirdy8813 yea yea I've heard that excuse a million times, LOL.. Tyson lost cos he's been champion for long, Tyson lost cos Cus just died, Tyson lost cos Rooney this n that, Tyson lost cos blah blah blah!🤣🤣🤣.. WHY can't u fanboys just face and accept the fact that he lost cos he's overrated and was outclassed and not as invincible as u fanboys thought him to be!! Hahaha excuses excuses!😂😂😂
Holyfield looking on like, "this is some bullshit right here...."
He made 10million with Douglas. Instead of 20 million by facing Tyson.
@@juangarcia-ml1by suppose to make 12 million by fighting mike
At least he knew he would get his title shot finally. Tyson had been ducking him for the entire 2 years he was the #1 contender. And even though all the boxing organizations threatened to strip Tyson of the title if he didn't face him next, surely Don and Mike would have figured out some way to duck him some more.
@@FUGP72 Holyfield was the #1 since March of 89. After the Dokes fight. It was a lil over a year. He was scheduled to fight The Real Deal in June. After Douglas.
@@FUGP72
Wow you don’t know wtf your talking about. He was literally the number 1 contender for approx a year. Not two. And they were planned to fight after this fight had Tyson won. Tyson for sure didn’t duck Holyfield. If that was true , why wouldn’t Tyson “duck”him in their 96 bout re re.
This guy is something else, besides what he did. Great attitude, character, perspective. He was fearless. Smart, but fearless. I like Mike, but he's a troubled character, and James is the kind of guy you want as an example and to play the hero. Life can be very hard. A boy loves his Mother. All that was going on, 29 years old, he handled it and somehow was in incredible shape and totally focused to fight in a strange far away land, against the most feared boxer ever. All the tragedy of life, but this was the moment of triumph
RIP? If you meant Douglass, he is still living.
AMERICA FIRST!!
@@kittyhawk7060 oh, shit, he is, I don’t know why I thought he was dead, but I thought he was dead. No second thought. Yeah thanks for the correction is 63. I’ve not seen or heard from him essentially since then

10 punches combination has forced Mike down. Buster is a Beast.
Buster really deserved the win a credit to his character, I remember watching the match and it was incredible to watch.
I was born in 1994 but I’ve seen this fight plenty of times. Me and a bunch of my moms friends were watching this fight last night before the ncaa game. They were telling me how mike looks invincible going into this fight and how nobody could believe what they were seeing. Still one of my favorite fights tho
This is one of those moments where you remember where you were when you either watched it or heard about it.
I hate the cliche that tyson would quit whenever anybody fought back against him. He took an absolute beating in this fight and still kept trying to win. Not only the 8th round kd, but also the way he tried to get up after getting knocked down. He showed heart in this fight.
Teddy Atlas has been the main one perpetuating that notion
It’s overstated but there’s truth in it. Tyson wasn’t intimidated of Douglas and he also didn’t believe he could be beaten. When he fought Evander it was different.
@TheRealC.T. later in his career yes. But the myth has been created that he always gave up when someone fought back(and the implication being that he only won because people were intimidated). Witness the ruddock fights for someone who fought him back. As he got older he definitely lost his ability to fight through adversity, but younger Mike had it.
When Douglas was in shape he was a good fighter. Big, good movement and skill, smart, can throw punches well.
You can tell that Tyson wasn't all there that night and Douglas had a lot of training and purpose behind his performance.
Tyson gave up when D'Amato died. He was just going through the paces.
@@donsimons9810 nah dude. the "cus D' Amato died" excuse is getting old sorry. people die everyday. you cant stop living just because people die. lol
@@nicecutie Oh everyone, hey, unknown goober over here has the facts of life sorted out - Tyson went on living after Cus died, thus he could not have lost his edge and motivation from losing his parent figure who brainwashed him into being the ultimate fighter, without whom he was clearly a lost soul. Thanks goober, we all are completely automatic machines now who don't experience change. get outta here
@@donsimons9810 Might want to get your timescale right. Cus D'Amato died years before this fight. Tyson won his first title four years before this fight. So I guess he was 'going through the paces' for a good five years then 🤣 Leaving Kevin Rooney had far more impact on his style as Tyson started to neglect head movement and threw fewer combinations. Plus as the quote says "Tyson refused to go to sleep early for the fight, deeming Douglas "an amateur" he could beat "if I didn't sleep for five weeks".
@@shockedthemonkey He went downhill. His other trainers around the d'amato time helped a lot too. Leaving any of them was bad for him. My point remains, as does the "timescale" reasoning. Just because he could still win fights after doesn't mean he didn't go downhill, dmas
Buster staying relaxed was a huge component, he’s got tremendous speed for a big fighter. Beautiful boxing. Buster Bomaye ❤️
52:49 - 53:00
@@xBE4STCLAN yep that's when buster Douglas beat the refs count and got up and took Tyson to school. What's your point?
D wow
Love hearing the pre fight predictions. LOL
To be fair not a single person on earth besides Buster himself (maybe not even his own trainers) thought he was about to pull off what he pulled off.
To Don't Worry: I recall that day when Warner Wolf from WABC Television in NY, stopped predicting the number of rounds for Douglas, but the number of punches: He speculated five punches.

LMFAO!!!
Predictions...Painnnn
Angelo Dundee made a prediction. I listened in well.
Douglas had occasionally shown flashes of brilliance before. But nothing like this. He just transcended everything in his prior history.
Physically he was in better shape than ever before and mentally he was a whole new person.
then Douglas gained 60 pounds and lost to Holyfield afterwards.
