Great video! Just a thought for ya…if ya ever need your blades officially Rockwell scored so you can compare them with your portable machine, Peter’s Heat Treat, Inc. will test them for you. The price is $50 per dozen blades plus you pay the shipping there and back, but the blades have to be removed from the knife. Ya can’t send them the entire knife, just the blade. It’s really not too bad of a price. With that price, they’ll also put it on their analyzer to confirm it’s really the type of steel advertised. For instance they’ll tell you if it’s really M390 and they give you a certificate with the percentage of each metal in the blade as “proof” it is or isn’t M390. If you ever watch Luv Them Knives, it’s identical to that. If I’m not mistaken, Lee sends his knives in to Peter’s now. I’ve had many blades sent in and have never had a problem. It’s kinda of nice knowing how hard your blades are and if they are truly the steel they’re supposed to be.
Hey, that's great to know. I'm familiar with Pete's -- they seem to do the heat treating for many U.S. mid-techs -- but I didn't know they provided testing services.
Great video and I really enjoyed your measured approach! If you’re interested in sending me these blades, in a well sealed envelope, I would be super interested in doing a live or unedited video to validate my tester. Edit: Obviously, I’ll open it “on air” And regarding certification of the indent tester: I couldn’t find test blocks better than +/- 5 HRC (!) and even these are $100 on Gringer catalog
I've found test blocks online that are certified to within 0.1 hrc, but they cost more than $300! I've seen them in the $125 range that are certified to +/- 2.5 hrc, which is pretty worthless. I was able to calibrate my machine so that the direct readings I'm getting are within .1-.2 hrc of Brian's readings, so I'm pretty happy with that. I'd be happy to send the blades to you, but I'd like to have them back when you're done with them. I think you can message me through YT?
@@BladeLabMiamisorry, I don’t know how to message through YT. I was hoping that you could contact me via email so that I could share my mailing address with you.
