    Ah, I remember “volcanoes” at school (1960s into 1970s) with orange ammonium dichromate ignited to produce an eruption of green ash. I recall my sister and me mixing it with I think potassium nitrate and powdered sugar, then adding a thick liquid made with gum Arabic to make it into a sticky dough we molded with our bare hands to make cones one could ignite (once dried) to “grow snakes” of ash. Happy and innocent and reckless days! The chrome oranges and greens bring it all back.

    Hexavalent chromium is a biproduct of welding stainless steel and other chromium alloys, the precipitate formed around the welds when you do a messy process like MIG is brown/red/orange depending how close you are to where the weld is. To repassivate the alloys I use a nitric acid paste which after an hour and a half I can easily brush off the weld biproducts with an acid resistantbrush(nylon?) and then the stainless steel is a dull matt silver. Sometimes theres a bit of green sort of blotch left over where the weld ends and I figure thats the chromium(3) mentioned in the video. I havent tried repassivating to try and get rid of it though usually I'll blend the welds and it gets removed through mechanical processes. My most recent example of this was using a 316L filler metal to join an unknown 300 series stainless to 2205 duplex.

    • @ExplosionsAndFire
      @ExplosionsAndFire  6 лет назад +41

      Thanks mate, I can't wait to be fully back.
      Ah in this case the 'vapours' is just really fine dust, not actually a gas, so a gas mask does the job pretty easily. Really, you shouldn't rely on a gas mask to do that though, the idea is more to remove the vapours from the air you're going to breathe, so it should be done outside or in a fumehood.
      I should've done all the burn tests outside in this video, but I was wearing at bare minimum a dust mask and avoiding the cloud, so I wasn't too worried for the odd test that I did and filmed.

      @@mynigga730 that's the majority of the cases for most chemists today. So we continue on and deal with the consequences later. I like to think of it as a sort of "you never get anywhere without actually doing stuff and taking risks". That said, most of us still try our best to be as careful as we can in such situations, but we don't generally show that part of it. Hence why most of us say to never try what we do at home as you don't see most of what's going on. Only what we want you to see. For me, instead of hexavalent chromium, it's white phosphorus that worries me and phossy jaw. So I tend to work with it in spurts and give lots of time between working with it. I've also had X-rays of my jaw done to see if anything has started and luckily, I've been good so far.

They are great, sturdy (pumped a shitload of corrosive fumes through mine and it still works after a year), cheap (dumpster diving) and if you just put a fan on them you can get them to run hours on end. They have a slow flow rate but pull a reasonable vacuum, around 30 mmHg, I used to do vacuum distillations with them of compounds over 300°C bp at atmospheric pressure for over 12 hours without a sweat. For sure beat using a fucking vacuum cleaner, no offense but really. And they are much more silent too.

I know Antimony trisulfude is commonly used for percussion caps, but I'm thinking silver nitrotetrozole might be more accessible in a situation where materials like antimony cant be harvested. Think SHTF situation, a practical percussion cap deflagration explosive, mildly safe, that can be made from harvested materials. We can make black powder, plenty of info on that. We can all cast lead balls... easy. But percussion caps from easily harvested waste materials found in junkyards, that would be a cool video.

    Mind you, chromic acid is the only substance I've seen that will dissolve stainless steel. It took about a week, but that was one stainless-steel spatula that was never going to be used again.

    I really wish your videos would go full screen it just looks dumb being a box literally the same size but on a black background unless I'm the only one having this problem idk.

    @Explosions&Fire2 Hey is there a video archive somewhere? I wanna laugh at old videos :D

      Having trouble setting up one big archive because both Vimeo and Vid.me have weekly upload limits. So most of the newer stuff is on Vimeo: vimeo.com/explosionsandfire and a lot of the old stuff is on Vid.me: vid.me/ExplosionsAndFire
