MAID RITE LOOSE MEAT SANDWICH - Iowa’s Favorite Sandwich

  • Originating in Iowa in 1926, the Maid Rite Loose Meat Sandwich has become a favorite throughout the Midwest. A simple sandwich to make, just season the ground chuck beef, mix with sautéed onions and mustard then serve loose on buttered and toasted hamburger buns. A delicious sandwich in about 15 minutes.
    Servings: 1
    Shopping List:
    1/2 lb. ground chuck beef 80/20
    Generous spray of beef broth
    Salt, pepper and garlic powder blend to taste
    Hamburger buns
    Butter
    1/4 white onion, roughly chopped
    1 tbsp. yellow mustard
    Dill pickle slices for garnish
    Directions:
    Over medium high heat, brown the ground beef. When almost browned, spray with a generous amount of beef broth, if cooking on a flattop. If cooking in a skillet, just pour in the broth and cook until most liquid has evaporated. Continue to cook until browned. Keep warm.
    Sauté the onions and season with SPG and add the mustard. Mix well.
    Toast the buns with butter.
    Add the loose browned ground beef to the bottom bun and top with the bun crown.
    Garnish with pickles and serve immediately.

    Hi chef, I actually have been through Iowa on a road trip to Chicago and stopped at a mom and pop diner and had this. It was so funny. No muss no fuss, just good! Thanks for bringing back a great food memory!

    Here where we live in the beautiful mountain state of West Virginia, we call that a loose meat patty melt cause we add the cheese. 👍

    My recipe contains 7 spices, fresh garlic, beef broth, vinegar, Worcestershire, and real butter. Simmered 2 hours. Served with or without cooking juices on a burger bun or sub roll, and if desired, topped with diced sweet onions. Delicious.

    Richard, great recipe & I've seen these on a couple of food shows, they look delicious, sloppy but good, I think they are big in the Midwest such as Iowa, Kansas, etc... I am gonna make this as I have always wanted to try, very nice pal

    I first heard of the loose meat sandwich on Roseanne. I don’t remember if they explained or showed a closeup of the finished product and always assumed it was more along the lines of the Philly steak meat instead of ground beef. Regardless, it sure looked tasty enough to give it a go!

    The Maid-Rite in my town makes them with cheese. But nothing else no french fries no BBQ sauce no mayonnaise no tomatoes no lettuce nothing I don't think they even give you silverware so the meat that flops down on your rapper you have to grab with your fingers. They should call them Maid Wrong honestly!😅 I get mine to go then cross the street to Hardee's and grab curly fries with it

      Hey there Richard. 42yr Iowan here and I can tell you that it is indeed one of Iowas favorite sandwiches. Not sure what rock this guys been living under but we have 2 favorites here in town. The Charlie Boy at Miles Inn, and Tastee In and Out. We also Have Billy Boy drive thru, and they even serve them as local favorites at our Dairy Queens in town.@@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN

    Bullion, garlic powder, salt. This has got to be a salt lick of a burger. If you are adding bullion do not add salt. I would also recommend NOT seasoning beef with beef. I like to use the mexican brand vegetable or tomato bullion.

      @@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN dehydrated onions beef and chicken bouillon cubes Worcestershire sauce vinegar 85% ground beef and water the meat does not get fried at all it gets cooked by simmering it with all the other ingredients uncovered
