Oak Update ― We Have Acorns Again!

  • Oaks do not produce acorns every year, and even in years that they do produce acorns, the number the produce can vary widely - and the literature claims that bur oaks do not even to begin to bear acorns until they are 25 years old, but some of these trees are producing at 6 or 7 years! So-far this year, we are getting what looks like a repeat of last year and will have plenty of acorns to work with this fall! I'll do an update when they get a bit bigger, and we'll see how many trees are actually producing this year. 😊

    So it was not a fluke, we have a steady supply of acorns from the bur oaks! I will be out of room soon, so it looks like I'll need to do a bit more clearing next year!

      Thanks Larry, I will check out "PictureThis". I guess RUclips was glitching because someone else had a problem as well 🤔

    I always love the updates on your oak trees! It’s so rewarding to plant them, and watch them grow. Especially now that you’ll be growing them from your own acorns.
    Glad that your trees are starting to produce. The local wildlife will thank you for your efforts!

      Thanks Kyler! I have a fairly bizarre update coming soon. Lots of amazing comebacks among the acorns around here! 😊

    That's cool! So now even if those other trees from last year's acorns don't make it, you will still be able to get trees from your own land!

      Thanks Luke! It looks like three of them will make it - not the four I need to replant the vineyard, but I'll take it!

    I've never seen the beginning of an acorn like that! I guess I never looked 🤔

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 месяца назад +2

      I never really did either. Part of that is you need to be walking past an oak that is producing acorns down low. The vast majority of the oaks on our property have acorns you cannot even see until they drop!

    My guess is swamp white oak, it could be a hybrid, Concordia oaks usually have more yellowish leaves. It’s hard telling what it is if it was sold as a Bur oak and is actually a hybrid. 🤷‍♂️

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 месяца назад +4

      I agree. Even the acorns on our land may be hybrid, so I'll just be happy if they remain healthy 😊

    Bur oaks like a ph of 6 to 6.8. Maybe check your PH near the chlorotic trees. Its a iron/manganese deficiency but PH and excessive potassium, phosphorus or magnesium can also lock those minerals out.
    Slightly acidic sandy loam is where a bur oak is happy.

    My comment got deleted. At first appeared to me as a Swamp white oak. I have planted a couple. I grabbed a screen grab of your video of the leaves and ran in through an AI plant identifier, it came back Burr Oak...and as I look those leaves don't appear to be as lobeless as my swamp white oaks. The plant identifier app is usually correct, but I have also seen it be wrong, I usually use it and then explore more. I named the app in my last comment and that may be against RUclips rules. I wasn't trying to sell it! 😂

      I think Larry's did as well as he posted "Test". Likely another RUclips glitch, but that would be pretty sucky 😑They do really look like bur oak now. I was looking at some of the bigger trees, and the leaf shape varies on the same tree with some of them having very distinct bur oak qualities, and other having a more rounded shape. Ill check the "Held for Review" bin and see if your comment is stuck there. Even a period in the wrong place looks like a link to RUclips 🥴

    Swamp white oak had white leaf undersides (quercus bicolor). Obviously not a chestnut oak. Those have entirely different leaves altogether. Do you have any black oak? The savana trifecta white, black, bur.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 месяца назад +3

      We do have black oak - quite a bit of it actually. The trees are now starting to get leaves that look a lot more like bur oak, so I'll take another look in midsummer and see what things look like then. 🤔

    are u planning to grow more oaks? if so, u should probably try out some California species like valley oaks, blue oaks ... they grow in mediterranean climate with little summer rainfall, so in ur place with more rain in summer, they'll probably grow fast

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 месяца назад +2

      That would be cool, but this is zone 4 here - it gets -40º here, and we get a lot of rain! Besides the environment, we are trying to rebuild the oak savanna habitat here, and those are not native species. I would love to see them in their native habitat though - maybe when it is minus 40 here 😉
