Hi Jeff! I agree. Sometimes simpler things are better especially if they are played with such great musical taste. He truly was a great songwriter. RIP. Thanks so much for your comment and insight!
Always been such an Eerie song and a terrifying story of American History. I always think about what it must have been for those souls in the freezing weather and water. RIP. Thanks for this lesson.
You are by far the best guitar teacher on RUclips. We started playing this song last night and just did a RUclips search and here you were teaching this song! Amazing! Thank you!
I always ♥ this song 🎵 even after working offshore for 25 years, somehow this song made me feel connected as I often thought that maybe my life would end in the blue waters one day , but by the grace of God I lived through it all. Thanks for sharing this song 🎵❤

My grandfather was a navy sea captain. My wife’s father a merchant sea captain. Those men and others risked life and limb so we may experience life’s grandeur here on land. As much as it’s romanticized and sensationalized, the sea can be and is a great terrifying beast easily capable of taking no prisoners in its wake at its whim. Thanks for sharing your wonderful skills with us regarding this timeless masterpiece which describes the maelstrom of deep icy waters perhaps more accurately than any other musical piece. You really get it. This is extremely helpful and useful!
Hi Todd! Thanks so much for your comment and feedback. My pleasure and really happy to know you liked the video and it's been helpful. Keep up the great work and thanks again!
You are correct, when the vocal pauses between lines you vamp an extra measure on the A. When there is no vocal pause between lines no extra measure. The fun part is memorizing where the pauses are and are not. 🤘
@@GuitarSongsChannel No worries. Just a bit sad that as a struggling newbie at 58, i was concentrating on his songs. They are sooooo underrated, he was so underrated?!
this is one of most favorite songs of all time and I'm 68 so that's a lot of time. Thanks Steve for teaching it to me. Now with a lot of practice I can finally play it. Thanks for that gift Steve, you're awesome man.
Thank you so much Steve. This one of my favorite songs ever, and you've made it so easy to learn as a beginner. You're focus on strum patterns was of great help. Like o said I'm a beginner and have the chords down pretty good, but tend to struggle with strum patterns as most beginners do. So when you focus on that portion of the lesson it really helps us out. Thanks again man👍
I very much appreciate that you count the beats when presenting the strumming patterns. Rhythm has always been a struggle for me,. Playing along with you counting it out is immensely helpful for me. Thanks much!
I remember seeing The "Fitz" pass under the elevator Bridge into/out of Duluth harbor on a few occassions when I went to UMD in the early 70s. Still holds a special place in my heart. The gales of November remembered. Great song. A true classic ballad.
Just those chords give me goosebumps and make me think of Captain Earnest Michael McSorley and the 29 men that went down with the “Fitz” on that cold November 10,1975 day. Also, Captain Bernie Cooper and the Arthur Anderson that braved the gale to go back out to find them. Nobody could have written a better song than Gordon Lightfoot. I like “Sundown” too.

This song was my introduction to music at about 7 years old. My mom bought the 45 with Sundown as the B. I listened to it everyday as a kid, until then, Music for me was the Star Wars soundtrack and Kiss Alive 2. This was something different, it had a story and emotion, it was a whole new ball game for me. Later on i started playing guitar and if i couldnt feel it, i couldnt write and play it. RiP Mr Lighfoot, what an incredibly emotional song.
Hi Frank! My pleasure and hope you have fun learning this nice tune. It would be a nice rendition to one of the great songwriters of our times. Thanks for your comment!
So fun for such a sad song. Just starting to learn guitar and this song is being a perfect confidence builder that I will be returning to frequently, thank you so much
Wow...best tutorial on the web...now i can play it....cheers.. I grew up on Lake Superior when this happened...know the legend well and remember the storm.
Thank you so much Steve. I am almost 77 years old and I love being able to sort of duplicate songs that I grew up with in the 70's. Your lesson was great, easy to follow, and your screen presence (i.e. personality) comes across really well.

This was a good video Steve and you are quite correct, Gordon does hang on that Asus2 for another bar during the first and the last verses of this song but not on the other verses. In the verses in between the first and the last Gordon hangs on the Asus2 for the first two lines of the verse and then eliminates these additional beats on the Asus2 for the last line. Its almost a FEEL thing. It adds presence to the first and last verses eliciting a more somber and ominous tone to the song. Im 67 and have been playing Lightfoots music since I was 16 yrs old. Still have most of the original music books.
Steve, You are the Best! Thank you teaching all of the different wasy to embellish and make the song come alive. This you forte, and no one does it better than you.
Steve, you really do have a way teaching even for an older Canuck you make it so easy having much more fun with my pandemic purchased Yamaha guitar thanks to you

It's on this verse it changes up for a bit.... "The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?"

Going to grab the guitar now :) Let you know how it goes...…...Audrey
Great lesson Steve. Thank you for doing this. The man’s music is legend and for me this one is the best. I believe your intro progression takes place exactly as you instructed every time the lead guitar comes in. If I am wrong I apologize but I believe that progression happens during every turn around with the lead guitar.
Thank you for this lesson , and all your lessons I really appreciate them I think you are real good at guitar and you are an inspiration to my guitar playing , keep on kicking butt!

Hi Steve. Just wanted to thank you for your videos. I’m 59 years old and wanted a new hobby (knitting just didn’t cut it lol) so I started watching you. Even though I’m not a rock star yet, I do know my 5 major chords. I also know the name of the strings EADGBE (Eat Apples Daily Good Bye Eddie) kinda silly but hey it works 😉.

Love the way you teach !! A suspended sandwich , makes it easy to remember !! Keeping it simple and play what sounds right and having fun !! I’ve also loved this song since I was a little boy , Played it constantly !!

I like the way u teach, I play a Kala bartion ukulele witch you know is tune to a guitar. I am 83 and thanks for the lesions
Amazing how such a simple chord pattern can produce such a perfect song.
Haunting lyrics only Lightfoot could deliver.
Hi Jeff! I agree. Sometimes simpler things are better especially if they are played with such great musical taste. He truly was a great songwriter. RIP. Thanks so much for your comment and insight!
I think that is one of the greatest songs ever written do you agree
Absolutely!
Yes
I’ve been saying this for years.... absolutely!!!
Yes, but..... The Railroad Trilogy is either a close second, or it's first. Mainly because of its many musical changes and complexities. ;-)
Absolutely. Still brings a tear to my eyes.
Always been such an Eerie song and a terrifying story of American History. I always think about what it must have been for those souls in the freezing weather and water. RIP. Thanks for this lesson.
My pleasure! Glad you liked the lesson and any questions feel free to ask anytime!
Thanks for watching, Yeremy! And thanks for sharing your experience! :-)

RIP Gordon! You will be sorely missed from this world 🇨🇦
Hi Ash! Thanks for your post. Such an awesome songwriter. Will be missed!
@@GuitarSongsChannel No worries. Just a bit sad that as a struggling newbie at 58, i was concentrating on his songs. They are sooooo underrated, he was so underrated?!
I didn't believe in capos until I herd this that lit me on fire I have been practicing for 14 teen months and pick up my acoustic once in a while.
Hi Harold. Thanks for your comment and for sharing. Keep up the great work and have fun. Acoustic guitar is awesome!
this is one of most favorite songs of all time and I'm 68 so that's a lot of time.
I had to subscribe. Best tutorial of this song on yt.
Smart move. Best guitar teacher on YT.
By far the best tutorial on this song. Simple, straight to the point, and easy for guitar players of every level. Thanks
Great lesson. I like how you breakdown the song structure without being too technical.
I remember seeing The "Fitz" pass under the elevator Bridge into/out of Duluth harbor on a few occassions when I went to UMD in the early 70s. Still holds a special place in my heart. The gales of November remembered. Great song. A true classic ballad.
Wow! That's a cool story! Thanks for sharing and thanks for your comment!
Dude, love the song but more importantly your style of teaching. When u play the video and show the chord changes, keep it up your a natural teacher
Thanks for watching and sharing! :-)

Hi Brian! Thanks for your comment and for sharing your story. It really is a great song. Have fun playing it.
Thanks Steve for bringing this great song to us...RIP Gordon

Best ballad ever written.
Hi. Thanks for commenting! It's a great song. Glad you liked the lesson. 🙂
One of the greatest ever. It’s kind of haunting when you think of the ship and the crew that perished.
Hi Dale. Thanks for your comment and insight. It is an awesome tune! Hope people enjoy learning and playing the song.

One of my favorite songs ever.. always makes my heart hurt to hear this but I still love it.

It's on this verse it changes up for a bit....
"The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?"

When you’re on the Asus2 occasionally chuck in an F# on the E string before the change to Em. Spare finger, may as well use it. Super song.
Hey thanks for commenting. You can definitely use the F# as a passing note before the E. It creates a cool descending bass line. Feel free to ask any questions if you need to and thanks for sharing!
this was a really helpful way to show what's going on. thank you

Hi. My pleasure! Thanks for your comment, really glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Steve you're an outstanding teacher. I love this song and I have been looking for a lesson that fit my level of playing (I suck) but this lesson gave me hope! Thanks!!!

GuitarZoom Songs - any chance to show the intro?
Omg, you're so down to earth and just make this so easy and comfortable. If I had to choose someone to teach me, it's you. W all play to some extent in my family but I still have plenty to learn. No feeling intimidated by your lesson at all, just smooth, friendly and easy. This was my brother's FAVORITE song and we just lost him. I am 'determined' to play this, so thank you! Going to grab the guitar now :) Let you know how it goes...…...Audrey
You’re an amazing teacher! Thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks so much for your comment and kind words!
Great video easy song to play thanks for the add to my library of song's
Great lesson Steve. Thank you for doing this. The man’s music is legend and for me this one is the best. I believe your intro progression takes place exactly as you instructed every time the lead guitar comes in. If I am wrong I apologize but I believe that progression happens during every turn around with the lead guitar.
Hi Bobby! Thanks for your feedback and comment.
Amazing how you can pick the tunes out. Great job.

Actually it is Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie...…… If you ate apples daily, you could live forever!
Fretting the chords when the Lightfoot recording was playing was very helpful to me. Hope you didn't "get in trouble."
I just found your site and love it. Your a remarkable teacher. Love your Martin guitar too. I've got a very old 12 string and still sounds beautiful. It's over 50 years old and still in mint condition! I'll definitely be following your videos now!
Hi Jill. Thanks for your comment. Awesome to have you here and any questions please feel free to ask.
Love the way you teach !! A suspended sandwich , makes it easy to remember !! Keeping it simple and play what sounds right and having fun !! I’ve also loved this song since I was a little boy , Played it constantly !!
Absolutely Love that song Steve 👍

I can't believe after years of trying different youtube lessons, I only found you today. You are a fantastic teacher with a great personality. Also, I got tripped up on that A to Em when I was playing along with the song. I believe it does happen in the song.

You are a wonderful teacher! I wish I could hire your to teach me and my kids. I struggle with playing different rhythms within different songs.
thanks Steve great lesson!! I liked how you emphasized the count on the A chord .. sometimes 2 groups of 3, sometimes 3 groups. That really helped.
Awesome! Thanks for watching, and thanks for sharing your positive experience! :-)
