Just here to say that whoever designed these smoke alarms is a sadist. Impossible to detach from the wiring, extremely loud chirping noises, and super temperamental. The headache these things cause are the reason so many people simply go without them sometimes, which is very dangerous. Looking forward to the day when someone creates a better system.

Oh god I just had mine gone off at 3am. My husband isn’t home so I had to climb up the ladder and do it myself. I started crying bcs they are impossible to take it off.
It’s the hardwiring(the fact that my cm/smoke detectors are linked) is the real nightmare. Idk which one is bad, if any, and they all chirp 5 times. Even inserting the battery is needlessly complicated.

You, sir, are a hero among men. At 4:30 am, after a long day of work at the farm, my smoke alarm decided it was time to wail the song of its people. This is not the first time it has willfully decided to rob me of sleep. But, thanks to you, my hero, I was able to vanquish my foe. I cannot thank you enough!

g0gs Thanks for checking out the video. It definitely takes both hands to disconnect. 😀 We recommend pressing tab down & pulling electrical connection point up with one hand while you use your other hand to press away the detector. My carbon monoxide smoke detector does not even have a tab. I'd like to see the easiest way to detach the alarm from the power harness. It's such a hassle all around, from disconnecting at such a height to resetting, then even getting the batteries out - what a horrible design. (I'd like to add advice after finally completing the task. The unseen tab is like an introverted slit aside the plug to the unit once detached from the wall. You'll have to improvise with a butter knife and push it outward while pulling out the wire harness. Use a phone flashlight etc to see cause you must turn off the power from the fuse box to the room you'll be in.)
Lol exactly. What a monumentally bad design that pressure tab is. Almost broke my neck falling off my step ladder just trying to get this thing off. Whoever designed these things must be a sadist.
It's 1am here and you have no idea how much this video saved me. I was all out of batteries and everybody was getting woken up from that freaking chirp, including my kids and my exhausted mom who had to be up for work in 3 hours. I've been trying to disconnect it, but was afraid I was doing it wrong so I'd break it or get shocked. After watching this, I realized my mistake was that I was pulling up on the tab rather than pushing down. I also had to pinch the sides of mine combined with pushing the tab down in order to get it to disconnect. Thank you for posting this video.

Thank you! Even if the connector has a different mechanism, like mine, it still helped me figure out what to do in a pinch. Mine had a pinch & pull connector. The dang thing still kept screaming every few seconds until I removed the battery. I'm in a condo where the only shared circuit I can't shut off is to the smoke detector.

DIY With Michael Borders probably not the best solution but I covered the smoke alarm next to my kitchen with clear wrap. The others are still installed Incase something bad actually happens.
Taylor Post Thanks for the update. Being close to the kitchen, it’s likely that this specific Detector has gathered more than just dust. Since it’s close to kitchen, it’s possible that it’s gathered small amounts of grease from cooking such as oils or steam. We recommend replacing that specific Detector with a brand new Detector may solve your issue. Keep us posted! 😎👍🔧🔩
I'm having such a horrible time - my alarm doesn't have the flap that disconnects the hard wire. I cannot switch mains off, as then I'll have no lights - I really can't get any sleep with incessant beeping - tomorrow I will call a electrician to remove alarm completely - if rather live woth the risk than go another sleepless night. - these alamrns should be battery powered only
Rod Champ Thanks for watching! Let’s get this figured out! We recommend two things! 1. Do a thorough cleaning with your vacuum cleaner and try to vacuum any dust or debris that could possibly be inside the detector causing it to go off. A video link is below that shows you how. ruclips.net/video/WKLYWTBNf_I/видео.html 2. If step one does not work and it continues to beep after you vacuum your detector, we recommend purchasing a canned air product and using it to do a thorough air cleaning of your detector. The high-pressure air will hopefully break free any dust or debris that is inside the detector causing it to go off. A video link is below. ruclips.net/video/f6rlV9X3Xxo/видео.html Keep us posted! PandaManWill Thanks for watching & sharing your question. In most cases, connection points with no release tabs will come directly off by pulling up however this can be tricky as they can be stuck on there pretty darn good. I agree pain in my ass these smoke alarms are to bad there the law though in canada its stupid though if people dont want to own one they should not be force to get one its annoying i am 5 foot 8 and i have fucking 8 foot ceilings where i live and the alarm keep beeping i mostly hit the reset button but i hardly can reach it even with the stepping stool so i got in the happit of turning off the lights by the circuit breaker so i dont have to hear it but one should not have to live in the dark hard wired fire alarms should be banned smoke alarms should be banned they have a toxic cancer causing chemical in them called americriem look it up fire alarms dont save lives if anything they can even cause cancer if the smoke alarm gets burned in a fire and the mostly do if you breath in the fumes you can trigger your cancer cells

Blumpkin Pumpkin Thanks for watching, let’s get this figured out together! In order to properly reset the Detector, you will need to ensure that the Detector is unhooked from hard wiring & also has battery removed. At this point, press & hold button for approximately 10-15 seconds. Once detector is fully reset, you will then reinstall battery & hook detector back up to hard wiring. Next, you will test detector by pressing & holding button which will allow detector to make its Test Beep. Hope this helps, keep us posted! Brucci Wayne Music Thanks for watching & we hope the video helped. That’s more common than you think. It’s possible that it’s stuck to the mount due to possible paint in between Detector & mount. When repainting ceilings, most people do not remove the actual mount that is secured to the ceiling... they just paint over it and in most cases they reattach the smoke detector to the ceiling mount before the paint fully dries.... securing the smoke detector on “not yet dried” paint causes it to stick pretty good. Possible...... Also, we just uploaded another video that might be helpful...maybe...maybe not. There is a catch on the side opposite of the big press down tab, the unit is removed by pushing down on the tab and allowing the connector to tip down and clear that plastic catch. In my unit, the tab was right flush with the plastic casing and I couldnt press down. I used a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the connector down and away from the catch and it came off. Tried to make that as clear as possible but ill restate it if it isnt I used a flathead screwdriver to ply the connector away from the catch on the opposite side of the big push down tab, and that worked. Also I hate these alarms with a passion because theyre connected to the units of my neighbors and every time they smoke or burn food the entire unit goes off for like 20 mins. So im trashing them and buying my own independent units.
I just subscribed . I’m learning how to get rid of the beeping noise that my smoke detector is making . It’s very annoying . How do I get rid of the beeping sound ?

This is probably a dumb question but my detector I believe had a bad battery so I took it out and I’m getting ready to go to sleep because it finally stopped chirping. Anyway the question is can I leave it unplugged but still attached to the ceiling? I’m not anything close to an electrical guy but I’m wondering if it’s safe to just leave the cords unplugged from the detector on the ceiling until I get a new battery. I don’t even want to plug it back in because I don’t want to risk it chirping again because it doesn’t have a battery at all now. I don’t understand electricity so my thought process is that leaving wires unplugged in the ceiling can cause a fire somehow. I’m gonna fix it soon I’m not planning on having it unplugged forever just for now.
Thanks for watching, some say it’s ok, others say not good practice. If you go that route, it’s best to replace battery and re-secure wiring as soon as you can. 👍
So if you are replacing with the same brand the mount AND the wires can stay, or should the wires be replaced every 10 years with the ones in the new kit as well?
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Replacing old detector with same model detector saves you a lot of time. New detector can connect right into old detector wiring. We have also attached a video link below that shows us replacing a detector and installing a required wiring adapter. You may need this adapter. ruclips.net/video/lwgDGiEshrE/видео.html 😎👍
So I have the same model at work and it is driving me insane. I’ve been listening to it every ten seconds for the last 12 hours. I went and pushed down on the damn tab but it’s like the tab is already pushed as far down as it can go. I have tried everything except disconnecting the power here and cutting the wires 😂

Only watched this because the stupid building management or whoever put like 5 in a small area and I made toast before work one day at 3 a.m and the alarm went off. It was so annoying and I just wanted to throw it but saw the connections. Is it bad to keep it off and reclip it on and not have power to it? I can barely cook anything without it freaking out
Thank you I had a major problem - continuely shrieking and I did not know how disconnect ot. - safely. And shifting the power fuse off on the 2019 new replacement did Not shut it down..ir went so long that the other one began and eventually the first faulty one had a melodumy. Never again of I can help it Again thanks a million times for sharing 🎁your know how with we who do not:)

You don’t actually show how the electrical connection comes off. Do you pull it, push it, slide it? Bc mine isn’t budging no matter what I do. What direction of force is needed once that little plastic piece is pushed down?
Candice Brown Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment Candice. It definitely requires both hands to remove electrical connection point. sun shine Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. How old is your detector? We have seen in the past that outdated/older style detectors do this. It’s possible that a brand new modern style detector will be far better for your basement. This video helped stop that annoying beeping! BUT HELP 🆘…I have the same smoke detector you’re showing except on my device, the hardwiring has white, black, and red wires, not white, black, yellow wires. The red wire came loose from inside the ceiling, so how do I reconnect the red wire inside the ceiling? Please help! I have no one to help me! Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching and we appreciate you sharing this. Any update? This can be tricky as it’s a hard wire that’s live. Use extreme caution if wiring is exposed. Do you see what the wire disconnected from? If it was improperly installed, regardless of if it was installed by a recent home owner or electrician, it may be a safety hazard and may need to be installed by a licensed electrician to ensure proper safe install and code.
Thank you kindly for your reply! The wiring is NOT EXPOSED! It’s an old Xfinity smoke alarm that’s NOT connected to anything! I’ve had ADT since 2017 and the ADT smoke detector is connected to the alarm panel, so I’m good to go! I appreciate your recommendations! Your video was extremely helpful and solved my problem immediately! You are a HERO ‼️👍🏾
Hashmat Chaudhuri Thanks for watching & it will really depend on the expiration date. This can be located on the underside of detector. If detector is older than 8 years, we definitely recommend replacing it. If detector is only...say...2 years old, you can just replace battery...unless detector is damaged or showing signs of age. Hope this helps. 😎👍🔧🔩
Can you please explain how to remove it from the wires my battery is out and it’s still beeping and hanging from the ceiling. I’ve pulled and pulled but it’s not coming off

I have the exact smoke detectors in my house. What would be the best detector on the market to replace it with? Also, the detector in my master bedroom will beep 3 to 4 times randomly once a day. Would anyone know why that is? I put a new battery in it. Thank you!
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. It will come down to personal preference. If purchasing a new brand of detector, you will need to ensure that you purchase the proper wire adapter to allow the new brand detector to connect into your current wiring. Most people replace their detectors with the exact same brand detector. The benefits of this is you will not need a wire adapter. In addition, you are purchasing a newer and more modern design detector that is compatible with your setup. 😎👍🔧🔩
I tried to use my hand to remove the smoke detector. Definitely difficult for me to do so. A flat tip screw driver actually helped me to pull the hard wire out

Um so.... it's nearly 5 am and I woke up to my smoke alarm in my room going off. Just the one. I took out the batteries, still went off. So I detached it from the ceiling and there is water dripping from that area. And it's almost impossible to detach from the wiring. AND it still keeps going off despite having a removable battery that I took out. Idk wtf to do. Kinda tempted to just put in my earbuds to drown out the noise and go back to bed- but, first of all, I'm sure my neighbors would not appreciate that, and secondly, I don't know if it's some sort of hazard? I just want it to shut the fuck up and I'm 16 so it's not like it's within my abilities to fix it right here and now or call someone to do it. Also: I'm like 80% sure it's not a roof leak as it hasn't rained recently, but, rather, some sort of condensation issue? Another corner in my room happens to have water droplets on the ceiling which is something I noticed a few weeks ago (although I noticed the mold from it long before that).
Thanks for watching & we appreciate you reaching out to us. That does not sound fun or safe...🤔 Any update? We recommend immediately turning circuit breaker off that supplies power to that exact room...this is because water is involved. Since it hasn’t rained recently, it may be a leaking water pipe. That will also need to be addressed. If you or those that may live with you own home, we recommend bringing it to their attention. If home is a rental, we recommend contacting landlord asap. Please keep us posted.

But what about it being expired?? Your smoke alarm is now ten years old, it's not even about changing the battery. It should be replaced 8-10 years in. That's the info that people really need.

Can anyone tell me if a chirping smoke detector will still work? (Like in case of real smoke or fire)? I am heading out to get a new battery tomorrow, but now it’s evening, so I’m gonna deal with the ANNOYING chirping until at least morning. Working detectors are always a security blanket for us, I would hate to not have one at all. (We live in an apartment) if there happens to be smoke, would the detector still work with the normal beeping? Right now it is chirping intermittently. And messing with our heads lol... Hope someone can answer, :)
Katie M Thanks for watching Katie M. That’s a great question. As you know, the chirping sound indicates that the battery is getting low on voltage. The battery acts as a back up electrical source in the event that your hard wiring activation portion fails due to a real fire for example. As long as your Detector is still properly connected & secured to the hard wiring, your detector should work...HOWEVER...it’s extremely important to replace old battery with new battery ASAP. For safety purposes, we strongly recommend replacing old battery with new battery when you start your day tomorrow! We hope this helps!

The one reason everyone's watching this video is to see how to disconnect the connector and you've cut that part out of the video...

Thanks for checking out the video.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders mine is a little different i dont see a tab anywhere
Press the SIDE TABS and pull down, NOT the big fat tab that he shows here. It’s 4am when mine went off.... goodnight.

Thanks for the update.

I cannot switch mains off, as then I'll have no lights - I really can't get any sleep with incessant beeping - tomorrow I will call a electrician to remove alarm completely - if rather live woth the risk than go another sleepless night. - these alamrns should be battery powered only

Thanks for watching! Let’s get this figured out!
We recommend two things!
1. Do a thorough cleaning with your vacuum cleaner and try to vacuum any dust or debris that could possibly be inside the detector causing it to go off. A video link is below that shows you how.
ruclips.net/video/WKLYWTBNf_I/видео.html
2. If step one does not work and it continues to beep after you vacuum your detector, we recommend purchasing a canned air product and using it to do a thorough air cleaning of your detector. The high-pressure air will hopefully break free any dust or debris that is inside the detector causing it to go off. A video link is below.

At this point, press & hold button for approximately 10-15 seconds.

Thanks for watching & we hope the video helped.

If the plug’s stuck use a screw driver to lift from the large tab
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your day.

Tried to make that as clear as possible but ill restate it if it isnt
I used a flathead screwdriver to ply the connector away from the catch on the opposite side of the big push down tab, and that worked.

Bryan Perkins Art

Never again of I can help it

You don’t actually show how the electrical connection comes off. Do you pull it, push it, slide it? Bc mine isn’t budging no matter what I do. What direction of force is needed once that little plastic piece is pushed down?
Candice Brown
Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment Candice. It definitely requires both hands to remove electrical connection point. What you do is press adjustable tab in & at the same time, you pull electrical connection point off. It would work even better if you had 3 hands...😀

Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. How old is your detector? We have seen in the past that outdated/older style detectors do this.
It’s possible that a brand new modern style detector will be far better for your basement.
However before anything, complete a thorough cleaning & verify that the electrical wiring shows no signs of damage & the connection point is properly secured.

Mario Calixterio
Thanks for watching & sharing your experience Mario. That’s a great idea. Expired Detectors must be replaced in order to properly comply with current house code.
After replacing Detector, your new Detector should be valid for years & will be nice & clean...no dust, no debris...😀

Hi there, you are very welcome. Thanks for watching. 👍
We have this same one at home! Do I need to replace the battery or buy a new one?
Hashmat Chaudhuri
Thanks for watching & it will really depend on the expiration date. This can be located on the underside of detector. If detector is older than 8 years, we definitely recommend replacing it.
If detector is only...say...2 years old, you can just replace battery...unless detector is damaged or showing signs of age. Hope this helps.

Turn off the breaker, replace a new smoke detector the next morning (if it happened around midnight)

Um so.... it's nearly 5 am and I woke up to my smoke alarm in my room going off.
That does not sound fun or safe...🤔
Any update? We recommend immediately turning circuit breaker off that supplies power to that exact room...this is because water is involved.
Since it hasn’t rained recently, it may be a leaking water pipe. That will also need to be addressed. If you or those that may live with you own home, we recommend bringing it to their attention. If home is a rental, we recommend contacting landlord asap.
Please keep us posted.

Katie M
Thanks for watching Katie M.
