  • Join STEM Ambassador Mark an Associate Professor in Cellular Neuroscience at the University of Reading. He will discuss how you could charge a smartphone from your brain.
Electricity is found throughout the human body. The flow of charged ions causes your heart to beat and your muscles to contract. But nowhere in the body is electrical activity better documented than the brain, which contains roughly a hundred billion electrically conductive, biological wires. In our brains, signals are passed through neurons as electricity, and this can be detected so that we can listen to our brain. However, the scale of electricity in our brains is much smaller than the electricity around us (e.g., televisions) and so if we could charge our smartphone, it would take a long time and mean that our brains could not do anything else (like keeping us alive!).
