  • I had some work to do on our driveway. I needed to move the drainage from the middle of the road over to the side and re-build the area we drive on. So I finally had the chance to use our newly rebuilt bulldozer.

    I'm eyeballing a 550C that's been sitting 10-12 years or so. It has a crack in the left side final drive housing case. the guy tried to patch it will JB weld. all that did was slow the leak just a little. Runs fine, clutches are good, undercarriage is low time. I get get the whole thing for 8k. I have to buy new batteries, do filter and all fluid changes (300 to 400 bucks I guess) I have about talked myself out of it tho, I have the time, just not all the proper tools and a place to work on it. It would be a fun project tho. I have watched a lot of you guys getting old iron going again. I enjoy watching. I also note Every Damn Part is a fight to remove, every nut bolt & screw. none has been touched and few machines were ever cleaned after a job. That makes for a massive PITA to complete.
    Cheers from Louisiana.

    Great video, nothing like the sound of a dozer. Hey, by the way, don't let the idiots in the comments get to you, if they had one inkling of what they were talking about, they wouldn't be trying to appear as know it alls. Thank you for sharing your video.

      Excellent job on the narrative of the old girl ! I owned a 1969 straight 450.... with a hydraulic 6 way blade and no factory ROPS.... and the grousers were worn down pretty low, but I liked it thar way because I did alot of residential work and they were much better on the lawns. Take care of yourself Tom

      I was the 5 owner of the the machine and had it for about 20 years and probably could have paid off a brand new one instead, but there's just something magical about your first dozer and parting with it every time it broke down wasn't in the plans !.. easy to work on, hard to find parts..but somehow I always found them

    You're lucky to have your dad , did you watch the youtube video of the 450 B I bought with the bad steering clutch
    it's (1970 John Deere 450B Loader) take a look if you have time.

    If you would like to see the 450 B I had you can view it on youtube (1970 John Deere 450B Loader).
    by Seth Fenby he sold it to me knowing the clutch was bad, he's located in Pa. so I was unable to check it out
    I took his word that all was good, I know, dumb on my part.

    Our 450 dozer will not even turn over. Bought the dozer 1month ago. Had it delivered 2 weeks ago. It ran where we bought it. It ran to load it for hauling. It ran to unload it. Has not ran now for 3 weeks. Replaced starter. The switch turns on and the gauges jump to life. Push the start button and nothing. Any ideas?

    • @JameySaunders
      @JameySaunders  3 года назад

      First, I'd check to make sure the battery is fully charged. We've had that same symptom when the battery is dead, but has just enough to activate the gauges. If it is charged, check the battery cables for corrosion. That has also happened to us. There's a battery disconnect switch, but I don't think the gauges will come on if that is off. Ours is pretty bad about killing the battery when it isn't being used, so we always use the battery disconnect. But it sounds like a bad connection or a bad battery. What happens if you short the solenoid on the starter?

    • @marvelvieou2497
      @marvelvieou2497 3 года назад

      We replaced the battery also. Appears to be keeping a charge. We always turn off the kill switch when not using. What do we touch to jump the starter? The starter is new also though. Replaced battery and starter and we still have the same issue. Puzzling.

    Very nice paint job. The engine sounds good but I'm hearing something like a low tone rattle, may be because you don't
    have everything put together, just my 2 cents . I can tell by the fluids and overall condition that this machine has been well maintained over the years.

    • @JameySaunders
      @JameySaunders  10 лет назад +1

      Actually, this machine was a complete basket case when we bought it. The tracks had been removed, and it had sat for ten years or more. We put new rails and rollers on it, but didn't have to do anything to the engine. We weren't sure about the transmission or the steering clutches until it was done, but we got lucky. I suspect the rattle was exhaust related - there's a coupler between the manifold and turbo that was worn out, but not bad enough to replace. It took us about three years of off and on work to get it back up and running, but it works great.
      We have a new toy I need to make a video of - a JD690C excavator...

  • @dukeman7595
    @dukeman7595 10 лет назад +1

    Man you did get lucky with the steering clutches, I know you have a good idea what is involved in changing them.
    If a guy was to have it done by a dealer your looking at $5000.00 dollars at least. I had a JD 450 B with the right steering clutch going out, and that was the quote I was given by my local John Deere Dealer in Springfield Mo.
    I ending up trading the machine to a fellow with a 350 B , it don't have the power of the 450 but it steers good.
    My next JD dozer will have a wet steering clutch, don't your 450 C have this feature ?

    • @JameySaunders
      @JameySaunders  10 лет назад

      Yep, the 450C has wet clutches, the B models didn't. It helps that my dad has worked for a JD dealership for 45 years.There's not much on these small farm-sized dozers that he can't fix himself.

    Putting a 450D back into working condition and trying to locate a wiring diagram, have you any leads as to where to source this info? We are running low on cash for the project and I am at my wits end trying to get a simple PDF of the layout. The basic harness is there but changes were made making it difficult. Nice job you have done there. Looks factory fresh :-)

    • @JameySaunders
      @JameySaunders  9 лет назад

      I'm not sure how close the C and D models are, but I'll see if I can get ahold of my dad's service manuals. (A bunch of those things came home with him when the Deere service department where he's worked for 40+ years went all-digital with their service information.) It may be that the C and D models are close enough that the C model diagram will be helpful to you.

      Jamey Saunders Very kind offering my friend, and encouraging as well. From what I can see of the side view, there is very little difference with exception to access to the starter.. Have spent much time and effort with Google search. The starter and alternator are on the agenda, access to the starter is much more challenging . If all else fails I will have to make a diagram of what I have and and what would be logical. Those that have worked on this before made a dogs breakfast of the factory wiring. Why, I will never know, but it is my reality now. Looking forward to good report back :-)

      Have you had any luck there? Just sent the starter and alternator out last friday. Had to cut a hole in the frame to get a wrench on the lower starter bolt:-o. Went for a simplified "one wire" alt. Just touching base. Best regards

      Chris Leech Sorry it took so long... I just couldn't remember.
      My dad says that he has the diagram for the A through C models, but he thinks the D models are different. I can get you the diagrams he has if you think that'll help.

      Jamey Saunders I was wondering if I would hear back. Thing is, we had to have that out the door and on to a job a while back now. RUclips says these communications are a month old well I know it has been a little longer. What we did was: sent out the starter and alternator for rebuilding.; The Alt was then made to a one wire spec. So that simplified things. No guessing at the legacy wiring that quite frankly was a bit of a head scratcher. We just removed all wiring forward of the starter and created the new standard. New headlights, fore and aft, were mounted on the roll cage.and then lastly some renewed push buttons on the dash.
      You know the worst of it was making a hole in the 1/2" steel plate of the frame, to access the lower starter mounting bolt. That is one of probably many that are different on the 450D. I got tired of the slow process of using the hole saw which truthfully had worked pretty well for the 3.5" access hole but with a top speed of 80 rpm and the huge torque from the drill requiring two guys to execute, I found myself there alone the next day with a 75% through cut hole and got out the plasma cutter. I was recommended not to because of the possibility of a fire. Sure enough I had a quite the little inferno going before I got the hose on it. It ignited some of the diesel fuel and pine needles that were down there (from moving the fuel line out of the way to work). :-) No damage, just got my heart racing a bit :-) Its all good. The job was finished in a matter of seconds. You know the most difficult thing after that was to get the top nut onto the starter mounting stud after swapping out. I mean mind numbing multiple attempts with every trick I had in the book.
      . The shop is busy working on a excavator now and a big old skid steer that has never seen a garage and needs some TLC. There is the Water Skips going on right now on the lakes and big ponds out around here,...during the extra long slow spring thaw,..so we have the converting of snowmobiles and repairs to same for the duration. I keep telling those guys to invest in dry suits :-o
      After once again reviewing the layout of the dash and all of what I can of the "C" I would agree that there is probably too much differences to make the electrical schematics useful. You must know that at the time I was looking for anything to get me an understanding of John Deere wiring "conventions" more than specifics
      I gotta say though that 450c is quite a nice package and you did some good work on it. All the best Jamey and thanks for your kind offering.
      Thanks buddy,
      Best regards,
      Chris
