  • Here, I present my speed-corrected version of Herbert Morrison's May 6th,1937 broadcast on the Hindenburg airship disaster in its entirety. Charlie Nehlsen was the engineer.
All corrections have been based on Dr. Michael Biel and Chuck Schaden’s work as well as an excerpt (presumably) from Mr. Schaden’s WNIB speed-corrected version that was broadcast on May 3rd, 1997 which can be found here: www.wlshistory.... .
You may notice at 9:51 - 9:56 I have boosted the audio that was affected by the shockwave of the initial blast to a level in-line with the rest of the recording.
The ship would have been gliding over East Orange at roughly around 3:00 PM on May 6th, 1937. Several hours later, at 7:25 PM, disaster struck and the ship caught fire. Twenty minutes later, at 7:45 PM, NBC broadcast a bulletin from their New York studios on both the Red and Blue networks, then at 9:07 PM to 9:11 PM with another broadcast at 9:15 to 9:21 PM. William Burke Miller broadcast interviews live from a mobile unit at Lakehurst on the Blue Network during these times. Additional bulletins were broadcast at 10:00 to 10:03 PM on both Red and Blue, and again for a minute at 10:36 PM on Blue only. At 11:30 to 11:43 PM both Red and Blue presented a report from Lakehurst by James Begley of KYW, Philadelphia. Other live reports from the NBC mobile unit were broadcast the next day at 2:49 to 3:04 A.M and 8:21 to 8:30 A.M.
Mr. Morrison and Mr. Nehlsen had left Lakehurst and flew with the four 16-inch recordings to Chicago via Newark, Buffalo, and Detroit. It is assumed that a part of the recording was aired on WLS, Chicago, their home station at some point when they arrived. At 11:38 to 11:45 A.M. EDT a short part was aired on NBC Red plus WJZ. Morrison was interviewed live and a clip of the recording was played on NBC Blue (and not on WJZ as well) at 4:30 to 4:45 P.M.
