Had the same problem Mick on my Qualcast 35s and found this video. Problem and procedure were the same. The gear didn't look as damaged as the one you took out but the gunk on it was very thick and dryish so I said I'd clean it off and put everything back together until I could order and receive a new one from the UK as I could go on cutting the lawn as the roller did actually work when engaged with the engine on. Anyway, cleaning the gunk off and adding fresh grease solved the problem. If it goes again, I'll buy the gear for sure but all good for the moment. Your site is absolutely excellent Mick! Really first rate! I live in an Irish town and dealers throughout Ireland don't even sell cylinder mowers anymore or repair them. Only place to repair them is in Dublin which adds hugely to any fixing cost by the time you pay for a courier to collect and drop back. This site is a real life saver then! Keep up the great work and thanks so much Mick!
Love the look of that machine. Seems like it would be old but I have no idea of its age. Glad you have the know how to diagnose and fix this mower. Great job. Thanks for the video.
Hi Mick I noticed at 14.27 that the belt for the cylinder above the idler pully their is a plastic guide the belt was over it rather than under it I hope you spotted it and corrected it before you fired it up. I did the same on my mower and it wrecked the plastic guide had to get a new plastic plate behind the main pulley not cheap keep up the good work mate.
A great repair Mick HM will be very happy with your work. I’m looking forward to seeing the magnolia tree in flower this spring. Great channel fella 👍🏼
Wonderful videos Mick - a great contribution to DIY garden machinery maintenance! Comparing this video with the one addressing renewing the roller ring gear, it appears that in this video you have the modified (later) pinion housing assembly, where the black plate is NOT secured with the same bolts as secure the roller bushings. In the other video you seem to have an older mower with the original (triangular) pinion housing assembly. In those cases you illustrate how to fit the black plate when securing the roller bushings - quite fiddly I think. So it seems that the later pinion housing assembly has made servicing these mowers rather easier!
Hi @themoverman. I recently loaned my Balmoral 17S and received back with brokken and worn internals - unusable. By following your fantistic videos I replced the casette gear, both pink system gears, both belts, the pinion gear, the ring gear and added your recomended Pinion plate. Under power the mower now runs beautifully but it cant be pushed or pulled when not-powered. The strange gearing inside the split roller means that when one half turns forwards the other half turns backwards (and vice versa). This effectively locks the roller so I can manouver the move unless its under power and only forwards. Can you think of what may be wrong?
Just inherited a qualcast classic 35s. It's drive on roller is very sluggish and won't pull hardly at unless on full revs. Do you reckon the pinion may well be the issue
Hi Mick, thanks for your great videos. Please can you help me, I’ve inherited an atco balmoral 14 Se. I need quite a few parts for it and not sure where to get them along with please can you tell me where I can find the engine model code. Thank you in advance
Hi Mick, thank you for your reply, I’ve been told that I need the engine number to match the carb that’s on there as it’s half missing. I also need the threaded connection that takes the drive cable through it, the battery case cover for the key start and a pull cord. If you have any of these parts that you could sell me that would be amazing. Thank you in advance.
Mick - when replacing an "e clip" use long nose pliers to squeeze the clip against the far side of the shaft - it should "clip" in with no risk to hands or fingers.
Michael, can you do a vid or even better a long series of vids on that ballast blowing track lifting engine you drive, & the process & specifications on re-laying tracks, acceptable gradients, cant/camber, height, rail & tie longevity, embankment maintenance & stability etc. i think that would be very interesting material for a series ?
Hello, I have a balmoral 20 se my roller of block when I push or shoot the machine. I changed the play as it was on the video, but it always blocks. What is it to do?
It's vary hard for me to diagnose without seeing the mower.. I would say check the cables have enough slack.. check the belts also.. adjustment of the drive cable..
Hey mate have you ever seen one of those pinion plates cracked. Never thought I'd see the day. Can't seem to add a pic here but I've just taken one off a Suffolk Punch.
Hello @Micks Mowers greetings from Poland, sorry to bother you, but I spread my hands out of helplessness. Last year I purchased a used 2001 Atco Balmoral mower. It had a problem with the rear drive shaft jamming. I replaced the Pinion Gear Drive Shaft, the problem was less, but after a few months the Drive Shaft was practically eaten, thrown out, and spit out. This year I replaced the set of aluminum gear and Drive Shaft, the rear shaft jams and I am not able to maneuver the mower with the engine off. where to look for the problem? Could it be the fault of the differential? in general, it works rather fine on its own (the differential). Can I send you any photos or recordings?
I found a solution to my problem, sometimes it's worth getting away from the topic and starting with a fresh mind. In my case, the problem was that the axis of the rear-drive drum was not parallel to the axis of the drive shaft, it is possible that at some point the frame of the mower was slightly bent.
Amended first post. Many thanks for this video and something I definitely neeeded to check. Now I’ve learned more! Clutch cable has been removed in prep for new one ordered! Definitely needed ( solid as a rock! ) 19mm spanner and clutch pulley pulled , roller forward moving freely back and forth 😁😁😅
