I've always thought those looked ridiculously huge. The Alex Lifeson model is different... has a smaller headstock & it's the only one I'd want. Actually, the ones at 5:34 and 6:07 look pretty good too.
Fun fact: despite using it live for a long time, Jimmy Page only recorded one studio track with the EDS-1275. Carouselambra from their last album. (It’s in there under all the synths).
If upper fret access is a concern and you want a double neck, get a BC Rich. The "B" double neck is a classic in it's own right and you can get the Korean versions for under $2k brand new WITH a hardshell case. They're neck(s) through body too!
I’ve got the single neck version of the new Korean made Bich, and it’s a great guitar. Only thing I changed was the pickups; I didn’t care for the stock Dimarzio D Activators, so I swapped them out for a MegaDrive and PAF Pro I had laying around. It’s got 80s tone for days now!
@@bucknasty69 I've been waiting for the Koa ones to come in stock at sweetwater. Was leaning towards the double neck but might just go with the 6. It may come down to whichever one comes in stock first. I love the DActivators in the six but the double neck has Duncan Designs which I'd change. The DActivators in the six string I'd be happy with.
@@Darth.Shredder I didn’t know they’re bringing out a koa model. I’m happy with my purple metallic one, but koa would be nice. D Activators are good pickups. I’ve been playing double necks for ever, but every time people saw it, they entered to hear Stairway. I didn’t want to play that anymore…even Zeppelin didn’t want to play Stairway anymore!
I had a white 1 back in the mid 2000s and came across hard times and had to part with it. But it went to a good owner thats plays it in a rush tribute band. And they still use it today.
Gibson uses lots of veneer....Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. The tops and backs are approximately 1/4" in thickness after layup.
How is it that Gibson almost never produced a double neck model with a guitar that had more than 20 Frets while any other builder was not restricted in that fashion? Was it only because they were attempting to unload ES-175 fingerboards or something?
The pics of Todd with it look 1974ish so he could’ve been the original or 2nd owner and since the pics show he took it on the road so it could’ve got stolen from him. Sounds like a story worth looking into

Trogly you need to check out Joanie Marshall‘s freak of a late 50s Gibson sunburst double neck guitar/banjo. It’s got a great story I think you’d love.
This is a very special guitar, Todd Rundgren is one of my heroes, and it's great to see this guitar surface. Not quite a "The Fool" level guitar, but Todd certainly has great taste! You should check out his Veleno Ankh guitar, they just "reissued" it.
Great detective work. I heard that the reason that Gibson does not make the cutaways deep on their double necks was a concern over the combined tension of all 18 strings on the body. The deeper cutaway on just the six string is a good compromise. But many companies have deeper cutaways on both necks. for example PRS, Carvin/Kiesel, BC Rich, etc. Alex Axe made a nice one. Alex used to have a shop on the infamous 48th street in Manhattan across the street from Many’s and the original Sam Ash. Alex sold double necks to Clapton and John Entwistle. I heard the late great Mark Hitt from Rat Race Choir play one and it sounded great. Ed Roman Guitars in Las Vegas once had Mark’s Alex Axe double neck and has a picture of it on their site. A while ago you showed a Gibson double neck with six pickups in white. Gibson should make another version of that with the Rundgren/ Farner mod. By the way, Mark Farner said in an interview that he started plying the lightweight Parker Fly guitar after his back doctor said that he needs to start using light weight guitars. Maybe that’s when he got rid of the double neck.

If you watch the Eagle’s official video for “In The City”, you’ll see Joe Walsh playing a similarly shaped double neck. I always wondered if it was factory or modified.
I had a Carvin double that was an 81 I got at a pawn shop for 700 with original hard case. Just two heavy. Sounded great but just too much. Sold it to Guitar Center and they sold it the next day. They are cool but you need a better back than mine to play live.
Mark Farner played a solid body with no cuts for a long time well into the early 80s. I think it was a Gretsch but i could be wrong. Msy have been another brand that i cant recall right now but was quite popular in Europe.
