- A traditional British dish of mashed vegetables. As the veggies cook, they "bubble and squeak." The printable recipe is on my website here: www.agardenfor... Thank you for watching!
Here we go again! A video I haven’t seen? What a treasure.
I grew up with bubble and squeak. The squeak was cabbage. We had it for breakfast; yes, it also contained leftover vegetables from the night dinner but potatoes and cabbage were the must. With a fried egg on top. My father cooked this for me. I came from a dairy farm and this was a stable breakfast
What memories! My darling Dad was born in Victorian England and I was a late comer. How I remember Buble and squeak. About twice a year my mother would go to visit her mother and my darling dad would use the leftovers from the day day before. It was 90%potato with I think cabbage. It took ages to cook but would be wonderfully browned on both sides. What a treat. I think it was poor man’s food but it was nearly all he could could I suppose. I tried a couple of times but could never make it like he did. I’m in my 80s now. Dear Kevin I felt yours was only half done. 😅
Kevin this is so delicious! Thank you! I'm enjoying revisiting some of your prior episodes!!!
English girl here living in the States. I always made bubble n squeak using leftovers from a Sunday dinner or Christmas dinner of Turkey. Use all the vegetables that were left over and frying them up. Add the leftover meat and gravy. Yummy... By the way I tried your stew using the Guiness. Oh yes!!!! Awesome. New sub here. And I plan to try a lot more of your recipes. Thanks. Jan.
This brings back memories! My gran (sorry Gran) was a truly dreadful cook but she could rustle up a nice bubble and squeak. When I hear those words I'm back in her lean-to scullery with its gas stove and paraffin heater (no elf and safety in those days). In fairness to my gran, she was born in 1910 and came from a very poor family, living with the aftermath of two world wars (and subsequent austerity).
You make me want to make dinners I never thought could go together!
I agree! Going to try this
Even the cooking technique, smashing veg in the hot pot😅
I am from England and my Mum always made Bubble and Squeak using all the leftover veggies from our Sunday Dinners, very nice with baked beans too! The Scottish seem to have Rumblethumps and in Ireland they have Colcannon, both are similar to Bubble and Squeak. All delicious!
Also English, and will admit to a weakness for supermarket-bought colcannon :)
Kevin what a dynamic dish. It reminds me of our Monday evening dinners as a child. My mum would make bubble and squeak with all the veg leftover from Sunday lunch dinner and serve this delightful fair with the meats leftover from the lunch making a rich brown gravy......it was the absolute treat.
We used to make sure there was leftovers 😛 Love your recipe 💯👌🇿🇦
You are amazing ....all your recepies are not only delicious-but so different. A great variety of stunning ideas...!!!!I used to live /dance in London for many years and had that in our theater- canteen .. and in a english-country-food-reataurant doen the road.. because it also is healthy .THANK YOU for all those inspirations..
My grandma used to make bubble and squeak on Mondays after Sundays roast with left over veg and potatoes and we called it scrumblies. Delicious. She was from Manchester and rather posh but was a wonderful cook.
i applaud the brits for many things as they have shown a capacity to endure so many hardships quite bravely and this too is one of them. god bless the brits, and thank god my mom had 10 kids, we never had leftovers.

I’ve never heard of bubble and squeak. Will have to try! Thanks, Kevin!

Have ya had a bubble and squeak sandwich ,elvis would love it 😂😂😂😂😂
We’ll look at that. I’ve always wondered what is bubble and squeak. It’s a must try I think tasty and economical. Thanks!
Great recipe, Kevin!
Very Downton Abbey. 😃
a dish for staff below stairs of course !
As I have only had or made bubble and squeak with left over vegetables, I was a little bit perturbed to see the Brussels sprouts going in with the root vegetables, as I only find sprouts tolerable when slightly crunchy, having been traumatized by slimy soggy ones in my wartime school dinners! In fact, such was the state of the average British cookery until post war currency restrictions ended and the development of package holidays which meant travel to the continent was no longer confined to the wealthy, that having met really interesting food, people began to perk up their ideas. I was fortunate to have a mother who really knew how to cook so that she became a sort of local advisor when rationing became really stringent. Some of her friends came from families where there were cook/housemaids, who quickly disappeared into factories or the services, so they were at a loss in the kitchen. Good to see B & S celebrated in any form!
Thank you dear Kevin for noticing my posts.
I should do this with the leftover potatoes and carrots from St Patrick's Day, but Thai delivery is so much easier! I'll try it, someday
This has always been a tasty, low carb meal of mine! Thx KLJ!
I use arrowroot for thickening.
Hi Kevin, I made this for my brunch today and it was absolutely, delicious! Oh my goodness, I loved it. I have bread pudding in the oven for my day of decadence. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipe. Hugs, Julie 🥰
So glad you enjoyed it!!!
I'll try this, it looks so great!
Good Morning Kevin - looks delicious. Thank you,
Who wouldn’t thunk? 😂 Very unusual dish but I will try it one day.
Wow always wondered what bubble and squeak was!😃Thanks Kevin I will be making this👨🍳🙏‼️😋😋😋 once again you outdid yourself 💕⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As a child back in the early 1960s we had B&S on a Monday made from all the roasted veg from the Sunday lunch. It was fried in a large fry pan and served with bacon and fried eggs. Delicious. Enjoy your bubble and squeak with a variety of your favourite extras.
I'm from Canada, and it was usually potatoe and cabbage.
I absolutely love vintage recipes like that and you do it so well. Thank you for your effort. Please play some music for us.
Nice dish❤
I love your version of Bubble n Squeak, in England we usually have it for breakfast.
What an intriguing recipe!
Looks delicious..great job Kevin
Dear Kevin what a absolute treat. 👋👋
Wow, love that kind of meal. I make something similar like that often. I use bacon grease, honey and soya sauce. Cheers from Kamloops bc. 🥂
Thank you 👍🏻
Just discovered you and love your videos. I'm from England and in our family bubble and squeak was made with left-over veg. In the same way ( loved how you understood the crispy bits) but we mashed our veg before frying it. M - in-law used to just fry the chunks of veg,
It looks great! I can almost taste it.
How 🤔 do you stay slim eating all this yummy food??
See home gym video 😉
I just ate Choccy porridge with blueberries and walnuts… but watching this I am feeling still hungry 😅😊❤
This is a really delicious looking dish! I might have to give it a try. Thank you for showing us your version. Cheers! ☺💖🙏
Hello Kevin, these dishes look so good. I would love to try these dishes. Thank you for sharing. God Bless.
Kevin, this looks spectacular! Thank you so much. That mushroom gravy could be used for many other things as well !
I so want to make this, it looks fantastic, my husband is diabetic, we try to stay close to a keto diet, no to very low carbs diet, I would think cauliflower mash instead of potatoes would work...
Yum and something different to our usual menu... 😁
All my favorite ingredients!
So many inspiring recipes!
I will try this one for sure.
This looks delicious.. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
My Aunt used to make this.
Hi Kevin my husband was a Geordie (Newcastle England)and his Mommadeitwuth abbageetc , your fan Louise😊
I never thought I would see an American making Bubble and Squeak. Bubble and Squeak is all so Cockney rhyming slang for Greek.
Just amazing
Kevin I made the Chicken and Dumplings, My husband loved it!! hmmmmmm might do this dish! thanks for the info!
I'm so glad!!!
Just to let you know I’m Canadian and I married an Englishman, bubble and squeak is very well known in our family
Buy British bangers next time kev. So much better than random Italian
In my tradition Bubble & Squeak was made with fried "Bangers" and left over cabbage and mashed potatoes.... With "Onion Gravy"
Don't sweat the small stuff with the Ye Olde S & P. My Mother is almost 84 and doesn't season enough. I blame her tastebuds.😆
Did you lihgtly pierce the sausages before baking?
ASMR!
Sorry mistake it’s cabbage
I thought that bottle of OO was a Flask !😂
Personally, I do not like to put left over food in another dish. I can heat and eat it as is but would not put in a new recipe. When you do it like this using fresh vegetables it suits my taste really 😋
Wonder how Bubble and Squeak got its name? I’ll have to research!
Kevin explained the origins of the name at the beginning of the video.
I was waiting for a nice pad of butter to finish off the gravy. But alas, it never came 😞 LOL!
