  • This is a brief summary of DCR Brown’s ‘O GROUP’ rules for Battalion level actions for WW2. It’s extracted from Part 3 of my ‘CLOSING THE POCKET’ After Action Review video where I played O GROUP solo.
It’s not a deep dive into the rules but rather me sharing my thoughts on what I really like about these rules.

Was half tempted to close the video because of the intro song, instead opted to skip forward

Taste in Music is very subjective. I’m never going to please everyone. If you come to a Wargame for the music invariably you’ll be disappointed

Same, that song was cringe. Great video after that

Good stuff, great to hear a military man's take on the rules. Big fan of 'O' Group.

The most unlike WWII music possible lol. Seems like an excellent set of rules.

I could have used ‘Springtime for Hitler and Germany’ but decided on something more ‘contemporary’. Besides, copyright strikes are no fun

Great to see you looking so well old bean. I ike your thoughts on scale and using the system to fit your needs. I don’t think there ever will be one rule set to rule them all especially since we all have particular ideas and concepts we wish to explore. Moreover, I also like bigger tables to create more manoeuvre options and depth of field. Your sets look great too. Best wishes

Thanks for the comments ol’Chap! O Group are a wiz bang set of rules,… really ‘Top Draw’. I’ll be doing an in depth review rather than a brief summary shortly.

@@CheckYourLeaderTV great look forward to it. I like fast paced systems for decision making challenges and this looks quick. However, I can’t explore these in depth at this time due to our existing work and our own systems in play in phase 2 of the Wargame we are doing. That said I think whatever tactical system works if it works for you that is what you must go with. Currently we have red, blue and green forces ( asymetic ) in play so I am a tad busy but whatevs to say hello and send my best wishes.

Good review, tells us what to expect, I’ve had the rules for some time now but no opponent and no army painted. As my eye sight isn’t what it was I’ll go for 15mm. To begin with May 1940. Having a full Battalion to play with I’m looking for a history book to show which battalions of the BEF moved from initial deployment to disembarkation point.
This is so that I can realistically expect to happen.
Some platoons or companies got separated from their parent units so if that occurs I can follow up with CoC or AIBSM.
That is if I can play a campaign game with a half way decent tourist map (or better).

Do you think an 8x5 table will be big enough to support this ruleset at 20mm? I’m currently building an army in 20mm and I’m hoping a table of that size will be suitable.

    • @CheckYourLeaderTV
      @CheckYourLeaderTV  Год назад

Yep. 8x5 will work nicely I think.

thanks for putting this series together. I am torn between 20mm and 10/12mm, but the smaller scale is more sensible for my table ... BooHoo!

I use 12mm and have never regretted it. I must say that I’ve never seen a game finish in three hours!! But it’s still a most excellent ruleset. I like the abstract nature of the combat system - it definitely feels like you’re a battalion commander, worrying about the overall picture and not counting rifle rounds!!
Awesome channel - I appreciate the fact that you’re shaking off the coils of deadlines in your retirement. Hoping to do that myself in a few years! 😁😁😄
