I grew up in the 80s and those early bands like Sodom/Hellhammer/Kreator etc were not considered Death Metal or Black Metal. Those bands were considered 'Thrash Metal' If you could only get a hold of full length albums I remember Possessed and DEATH being the first Death Metal albums. It was the 1990s Black Metal (Norway) bands who started calling the early 'thrash' bands 'The first wave of Black Metal. Back in 1982 Venom were black metal and black metal was venom ;) When it comes to first Death Metal I almost consider the Hellhammer ep the first Death Metal ;) Onslaught had a track called Death Metal but their sound on their first album is closer to that of Discharge mixed with GBH. This is not even my opinion, this is what I grew up with and my experience from 1980 to now ;)
I just listened to Into The Pandemonium the other day. Don is mostly right, it's way too experimental. It has the Frost core sound, but they ultimately got too self indulgent and went off the deep end. I didn't like it when I 1st heard it either, but it's not as bad as people made it out to be.
