- Indian actor Dhritiman Chatterjee talks about 'Pratidwandi film'.
"Pratidwandi was made in 1970. It was a time when we were all students as well or just out of college. So, we were really part of the 60's generation and therefore the film was relevant to us not only as actors but as people the sort of people we were at that time. It was a reflection of the spirit of the 60's particularly the situation in Calcutta in West Bengal in the 60's, but one later realise talking to people of the film had been made that obviously, people found a much greater if you wanted universal context in it for instance young people in other cities like Bombay, Madras..."

Last two weeks I had taken his scenes from this film for students at my acting class!! And one of our students had chosen the interview section to work on...
Of course, that scene is one of the most iconic scenes in film history.
@@RajarsheeMitra I know him. Even personally.
agantuk, ganashatru... what a great actor. He nailed it.
That interview scene one of my favorite sir
Excellent actor without an inch of doubt
Today there is no director like Ray, Sen and Dasgupta who can fit this type of brilliant actor into their films. Bengal is undergoing the scourge of intellectual bankruptcy.
Ghatak too
What made Ray arguably the greatest film maker of his generation - and even beyond - is that he is the only director I know who wrote and produced many of his own films. He was almost a one-man production company. How this man never won an Oscar is something I have never understood. Hollywood, for all its glitz and glamour, has never produced a director like Satyajit Ray. The man was a cinematic genius.
Brilliant actor and brilliant voice.
@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 Ray belongs to a generation of filmmakers that we shall never seen again. Ray's goal was to tell a story about the community in which he resided, that is the West Bengal area. Ousmane Sembene had done a similar thing in his native Senegal. Their goal was to tell a story in the same manner as a novel. They had an advantage knowing that the potential to make huge profits was minute, so they could tell their stories without comoromising the integrity of the film. In the West, even in independent cinema, their end game us to get a big producer to pick up their film so they can can get wide distribution.
@@juanestadian8471 I believe you're right Juan. We most likely will never see another film director like Satyajit Ray. And one of the things that made him incomparable is that in some of his film like his Kolkata Trilogy, he puts the viewers in the position of the protagonist and asks them, "what would you do in their position?" It's as if he is almost forcing us to identify with the protagonist while the latter experiences a moral dilemma. And that's the genius of Ray. With other film makers, the audience is very passive but Ray provokes.
I love his voice
Same bro
The best in Indian film industry.
A class apart 👌🏾 💯 ✔️.... the whole team.... the director - Mr Ray, the actor, the dialogues and ofcourse the Bengali film industry.... way ahead of its time. ✌🏾✌🏾👍🏾👍🏾✋🏽
One of my favorite actors in Bengali cinema. Just love his voice and acting. Pratidwandi, Ganashatru and Agantuk speak volumes about him. I believe we are now going through a draught in terms of having actors like him.

Pratidwandi (1970) is not a traditional political film, it does have political undertones and themes. The movie explores the struggles of a young doctor, Siddhartha, in the backdrop of social and political upheaval in Calcutta during the late 1960s.
The film touches on issues like:
1. Naxalite movement: The film references the Naxalite movement, a radical leftist movement that emerged in India during the 1960s.
2. Social change: Pratidwandi portrays the tensions between traditional values and modernity, reflecting the societal shifts of the time.
3. Personal freedom: The protagonist's struggles represent the quest for individual freedom and autonomy in a rapidly changing world.
While Pratidwandi is not a overtly political film, it explores the human experiences and complexities set against the political and social landscape of the time, making it a thought-provoking and nuanced cinematic work.
I just love his way of conversation his voice and the accent
What a gravely voice he has! God is almighty.
Fantastic indeed but wretched subtitles
Voice 🔥
Dhritiman Chatterjee Sir had made a documentary on Holy River Ganges which was aired on Doordarshan. Please provide the name/RUclips link of the documentary. Thanks in advance
When was this interview taken? He must be in his mid 60s if not 70s now. But looks pretty young.
Class apart.
who is the interviewer
About Swatilekha Sengupta Manik da commented, his intelligent actress. That is also applicable for Soumitra Chhatterjee ( acted in his 14 films and the good vehicle of his ideas) and Dritiman Chatterjee. Dhritiman alias Protitwondi. Also Mrinal Sen' s Akaler Sandhane is an excellent performance.
