Special girl was phenomenal, it really made me feel something, the reflections didn’t ever show a camera - balloons seemingly appeared from the sky yet it looked like you were in a vehicle....what is your secret!? Thank you for contributing to this wonderful piece of art, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each video

i think the Cool Girl one may be my fav because we're just watching her be normal then be quirky and weird from the backseat. my interpretation is that we are observing her, the cool girl. and even though this cool girl literally eats lipstick, shes still the cool girl in our eyes for whatever reason

As an alevel media student i am desperate to know 1) what rainbow lights did you use in rainbow and how did you use them 2) how did you get the camera angles for literally alll of the lyric videos in the car and any tips for directing that 3) did you hire the car wash or just go through it a couple of times and finally 4) how did you get a stable shot for I kissed someone it wasn’t you??? I loved all of the videos so much and it gave me loads of inspiration for my coursework so THANK YOU!!!

does it matter to you if people "get it"? i imagine there are hints/messages/meanings that are subtle, does it matter to you how many people pick up on them or is it nice knowing they're in there, regardless? as a designer my job is to communicate and if people don't get it i need to do it again, but as a filmmaker i imagine you have more freedom to let people interpret it themselves. curious about ur opinion:) great job to you and dodie, pleased for you

      @comdrive3865 2 года назад

Since Jack doesn't reply, I'll give my view on it.
It does not matter if all people get it or not. That will never happen. But what does matter is that some educated people who appreciate the genre can understand it. As an artist, your own work always has depth to you. But as for how well that depth translates to an entirely different audience depends entirely on how much effort you're putting in to polish it.

Dumb question: the glasses in ‘Special Girl’, they’re reflective but I don’t see a camera. What is this witchcraft? Aka how did the filming set up look? Also great job on the lyric videos, I’ve watched and loved them all. Now back to listening to the album on repeat!

These videos were so absolutely exquisite! Not ashamed to say they made me cry multiple times. I have three questions because this whole project is so utterly intriguing to me, but you're probably going to have loads so you can just answer whichever you feel.
    1) What was your favorite part of creating these videos?
    2) Were there special effects involved in making the background for Before the Line, with the lightning and the dark void outside of the car, or was that a set? Or both?
    3) What was the inspiration behind having Sorry run backwards?
Stunning work! Seriously spectacular. You and Dodie are both incredibly talented creators, and I hope history remembers you as some of this generation's best and brightest, because you are.

jack!! first of all- LOVED THEM. I love when lyric videos are actual videos and not just lyrics over an image. I never watch those ones. these were phenomenal. all your work is great and you&dodie&hazel just create absolute magic. oh and ciaran is absolutely fantastic as always.
    1. who came up with the concept of having them all be in a car? I love that idea cuz I always feel like im in a video when I listen to her songs in the car
    2. what are some details you think we may have missed?
    3. I love how . feels like the quick change in the wings of a theater. not a question just loved that.
    4. why did ? start out of the car? that might be my favorite one.
    5. again not a question but the rainbow lighting in rainbow and the childhood videos in when just !!!!
    6. what was the concept behind the smoke in before the line? the suit in four tequilas down? & the makeup in cool girl?
    8. what was intentional on your part, what was dodie's vision, and what was just cuz?
    9. was it hard to film in a car, especially while driving? I imagine its very cramped.
    10. is special girl in slo motion or am I going crazy
    11. I only realized sorry was in reverse the second time around haha.
    12. how much was your directing and how much was improvisation on dodie's part?
    13. how many takes did a project like this take?
    14. just talk about the process and the ideas behind it i'm so interested in your pov on her album

I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!! here are a few...
-Why make them lyric videos? Did this add/take away from your look of the video? I personally really appreciate having the lyrics in the video! I just wonder the thought-process behind having them.
-How much of a through line/clear narrative did you want to have between all the songs on the album? The car seems to be the most obvious connection... Anything else you hoped we would notice visually/thematically? How important was it to you that they seemed to be connected/telling a larger story?
-Any lessons you've learned from directing other videos that you tried to implement with these videos?
-What other 'decisions' did you have to make as the director? Any that felt especially hard/easy?
-What did you 'start' with first ---a character/an idea/story/music/visuals/etc. ?
-Which video was the most fun/your favorite to make? (I'd also like to know dodie's!)
i'm very sleep-deprived/it's the last week of classes, so hopefully some of these q's made sense. i loved the album and the videos are great. can't wait for BOTH of you to rule the world!!!

Visuals to me always add something so special to music. Whether they make it more digestible or they add a whole other layer to the story. They were all done so well, they felt both planned and polished and at the same time beautifully raw. Everything dodie does oozes passion, so it was so nice to see her music go so perfectly with the visuals, it never felt dampened by them or excessive. They only amplified the authenticity and vulnerability of her work. Everyone did such an incredible job 👍🏻
My question/s- Did you and dodie have conflicting ideas about certain things? What were they & how did you compromise/work around that? Was it easier or harder directing a friend? ✨
P.S. Will there be a BTS video/outtakes? Always love seeing the ‘making of’ things & extras.

    questions!
    1. why did you choose to connect the videos for “Four Tequilas Down” and “.” rather than the more obvious choice of connecting “Sorry” and “When”?
    2. do the cars symbolize anything?
    3. did you take any inspiration from the existing music videos for “Hate Myself”, “Cool Girl”, and/or “I Kissed Someone (It Wasn’t You)”?
    5. why did you choose to have “Special Girl” slowed down and “Sorry” reversed?
    6. how many times did you guys have to go through that carwash to get the perfect take?
    7. was the smoke in the car in “Before the Line” real or special effects?
    8. how did you make the choices between the videos that you wanted to follow a more literal interpretation of the lyrics (such as the one for “Hate Myself”) and the ones that you wanted to show more of the emotion behind them (such as the one for “Sorry”)?
that is all, thank you for the beautiful art.

i think my favourite was the video for sorry. i loved the noire vibe and how it went in reverse and when it revealed to be what looked like blood on her hands i was like wooooaaahh. i mean it's cool because it being desaturated, it feels like blood but you can't see the redness. i mean for all i know i've interpreted it completely differently but yeah fantastic job

    i have so many questions.
was the car concept influenced by covid restrictions? if so, what was the original concept for the videos?
are all the videos filmed in one take or are there sneaky edits?
who came up with all the lyric videos being similar? is it because some of the songs in build a problem continue from the last one without a break?
how did you fit all the filming equipment/props into the car?
did you film all the videos back to back? how long did it take to film all of them?
Not many music videos make me feel things but i found these lyric videos exceptionally powerful. congratulations to you, dodie and everyone who worked on them

I've been following dodie for years at this point and I've seen Jack pop up in some of her videos and insta posts and then this video was recommended to me, I had never ventured into his channel but now I'm suscribed because he talks about films and that's my jam so new suscriber!

These were so beautifully pulled off and gave so much more OOMF to the album which is already a stunner gosh I just want to watch them again and again: I'd LOVE to know how you managed to create such beautiful natural lighting setups in all these, but especially I Kissed Someone and Rainbow, considering you where shooting in an actual CAR which is inherently cramped ahah!

Congratulations on making such beautiful and nuanced vignettes around these wonderful songs.
Q: Is Air So Sweet a reference to Out of Love? What/who were your main influences in approaching the project?
    Thanks Jack, all the best.

    Two questions:
    1. Are the videos meant to be watched according to the order on the album or by the time of upload on the channel?
    2. In 'When', is the video being projected on the wall irl or was it added in later?
And huge congrats, the overall concept is awesome and I really really enjoyed all of the individual "stories"!

    these are incredible!
How much of the vision of each video was yours vs dodie’s interpretation of the song and what was the process like to figure which elements to focus on?
Also how did you find it to have to express your concept and ideas in such a short time frame compared to say a short film?

I LOVED ALL OF THE VIDEOS!! I loved the concepts and how all of them related beautifully with the songs, in very clever ways! I wonder how much of the ideia of all of them being in cars come from the pandemic or if that was the goal since the beginning. As a radio and TV student i was AMAZED by how carefully placed the camera was in all of them, but my question is, how did you manage to put the camera outside the car? Loved every bit of it and would love for you to get into detail about the process of making it, specially since you are friends with dodie i liked to see your art blended very beautifully with her songs! Does knowing the artist in a personal way make it easier or harder to work your way through the video? I’ve seen other videoclips you made, but its very cool to see when two people can have the same tone about different pieces of art!

Whose idea was it to have them filmed in cars? Or did you both bring ideas to the table? They're all beautiful and I love what you have created for such an amazing album
