- How the L Number Plecos got their names, and the history of Datz Magazine in Germany. Why we use L# or LDA# For naming new plecos in the hobby. When did the system start, who started it, and why is it better than common trade names from the aquarium hobby while we wait for a latin name to arise from acedemia and ichthyologists.

Thanks friends. Cheers. - Животные
I used to really dislike the L number system, now I wish it was the only system 😆 thanks for sharing 😊
This is my kind of talk 😏
Average? Jk thanks haha
I love plecos. I had a common female when I was 7 that died when I was 19. I cried :(
You are so great on background information. Ty !!!
You got it! That's my specialty. Useless Trivia haha
8:17 - L075 Peckoltia sabaji aka para pleco.
Named after Dr. Mark Henry Sabaj Perez, interim Curator of Ichthyology at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.
He is speaking at the Bucks County Aquarium Society in October. Topic is his recent trip to West Africa.
Awesome info, thank you!
Wow, so many! I've never seen any of these except on some videos. Very beautiful colors and very interesting!! Really enjoyed this, thanks Alex❤🇨🇦
I bought an L81 golden nugget here in Israel September 12 2001. And I still have it. The yellow on the tail and dorsal fin has mostly disappeared. Other than that, there is no tangible sign of age. He's 5 inches long.
Whoa! Thats awesome. You are an amazing fishkeeper my friend!
Have you thought about breeding him just in case?
@@TedH71 I have only seen one L81 and that I purchased. So I couldn't breed them if I wanted to. But I never did want to: some time after I got him, I changed out the gravel for coarse black sand that I've had for years! I didn't get the connection but the Baryancistrus became dull and dark and as said the yellow disappeared with age. So of course the novelty was no longer there and add to that the tedious daily feeding of cucumbers for years and you can understand why the love wasn't there anymore. He was barely any prettier than a common plecostamus. I thought that's the way it goes with an old fish. Who'd want to breed them?
Three years ago I went white with the gravel. And the fish lit up its dull brown became a richer lighter brown and the whiteness of spots popped as of circa 2001. It's amazing what a substrate color can do for a fish that comouflages. But as said I have no access to small spot golden nuggets. So I can't breed them. Which is a shame as it proves in essence to be a pretty pleco.
Never knew there were so many types of plecos!
Great video. I didn’t realize how many different kinds and colors of plecos exist. They are so beautiful! I have one albino pleco that I’ve had three summers now. During the warm months it lives in my 500 gallon garden pond just outside my dining room window. I bring it indoors to stay in an aquarium (that I have just for it) once it starts getting colder. It’s such a nice fish!!!
Awesome!
What a well-timed video. I was wondering about this naming system! Thank you for making this video :)
Sure thing!
Really interesting. So many plecos so little naming 😊
I am also seeing a "C" system occasionally used with cories. Considering how fast they are also being introduced (and the nearly 200-and-growing-number of Apistogrammas) it makes sense.
Yes indeed and a sw system for loaches
They also have "ER" for unidentified Erromyzon loaches
Oh, I FINALLY got around to this one! Loricariidae are some of my favourites, so I knew the info, but oooh, they are so pretty!
Back around 15 years ago we had a L breeding WIZARD named Paw here in Denmark. I wonder if he is still active in the hobby. Super sweet guy too. I believe he was the first to make L046 around here.
Glad you enjoyed it! Ill check out this Paw fella too! Thanks
That blue phantom pleco is gorgeous
This is really interesting, and I loved seeing the images of different plecos.
Zed is the word for what in America you call a "Z". Naught is what people in the US call zero. Canadians also tend to use "zed" and "naught" but don't always. It somewhat depends on what part of Canada they're from. In all other parts of the English speaking world it's "zed" and "naught" for "z" and "0" respectively.
That blue one with white spots on it is gorgeous!
I've been wondering for a long time what the L numbers were all about. I wondered if they might refer to cross breeding, but when I saw that certain plecos with L numbers in front of them were captive bred, I sank back into the dispair of thinking I might never know. Now you have sorted me all out, as you have done on so many other issues having to do with fish. I'm so glad you're out there and that you know so much about fish, and further, that you are willing to share in very well produced videos.
Big thanks go out to you again!
Looking forward to hearing about this... I had wondered about all the L going on
This is so informative!!! Fantastic reporting; I enjoy this kind of content!🌻🌼🐝
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Fishtory apologies for not replying to your comments RUclips hasn’t been notifying me- I only see it if I rewatch the video 😢
Nice to hear some proper science for once. Thank you. It makes you wonder how many other species on the hobby are in fact undescribed by science.
Many if you count hybrids too!
Dude your channel is an underrated masterpiece 😬😬
I'm really glad I came across your channel and binging it ever since 🤓😂
Another great video. Thanks for this.
We get some crazy looking plecos, there are also some caniverous plecos.
Ahh yes! Good point. I cant believe i skipped over that lol. Thank you
I would love a video like a timelapse, from an aquarium to start to like 1 year or so.
I really watched many of your videos, but sometimes i don't know how often i should add nutrients (food), or trim de plants, water changes, or adjust any parameters. That would give us a better notion how it all works.
Thanks for your very informative videos, as always
Excellent video, just the right amount of information, great image editing.
Thank you so much!
Oh I’d love the blue ones ❤!
Theyre actually fairly affordable! 35 to 70 depending on size
Thank you so so much
My L340's are beautiful and breeding very nicely. Mine older juveniles are selling for $30.00 Canadian
Lucky/skilled and awesome!
Pleccos are cool
I used to have a panaque with unclear L-number.
It's favourite food is driftwood. Small guy but it regularly choked up my high capacity canister filter. Crazy guy.
The only "pleco" I want right now is the blue eyed lemon ancistrus (sometimes called L144 but its not actually the true L144).
Well that or the bulldog pleco
(chaetostoma). Neither of which I can find in stores. Tons of zebra plecos and golden nuggets though.
They have pitbull plecos at Moonlight aquatics lol... that's all I can say for sure.
The amount of pleco variations it's crazy
Right?
Yay first comment i win! Lol love plecos when they show themselves❤ 😊
Haha mysterious and beautiful
are spying on me? The last few videos have been on topics I am reading on 🤣
I just got my "back to nature guide - L-plecos" from Ingo Seidel
i freaked out when i saw the shadow of you in the background. I thought it was myself 🤣
Also, can you hit me up with a person who has a blue phantom that looks like the picture you have in the video? 🙈
I feel like it is really hard to get "quality" colours. Someone is always trying to pull a leg or some sort of scheme.
I live nearby Germany in Denmark 😝
Well good haha my spys are paid well for a reason
So if you love Plecos, does that make you a Brazil Nut on your fish choices?
Well played sir!
Algo, 🤙
now the C system in corydora
And A Apistogramma and the SW Loach system
@@Fishtory videos for days lol
I've always wondered which Pleco L001 is - do you know?
@6:02 Laton?
Haha ooops. Thanks
Hey guys, hopefully sometone can help with this. I have a shrimp colony tank that ive had for a few years and its doing very well - but I picked up a bunch of ramshorn snails too that are not doing well. They seem to be dying when they are the size of a pinky finger nail, the first snail I saw grew around 4 or 5 times the size of this. I added a bunch of dead coral into the tank but it had no effect, a shopkeeper told me it was the wrong type of calcium so i bought some "mineral blocks" to add to the tank. The issue is that it says its for reptiles and im wondering if it will harm my shrimps/snails?
You should be fine.
Do you know anything about your water parameters in general?
@@Finkeldinken its hard now because i put corals in. Everything else fine, it's planted tank for about 18 months. About 30% of the tank is java moss.
i wonder if there is ANYONE who knows every pleco by their L name. like you can say any number and they can say that is "common name" and "looks like.. description"
Ian fuller can
@@Fishtory that is almost impressive enough to be a show.. him on stage while people shout L numbers lol $20 entry. haha
Who got to make all the choices for this it seems like people who know nothing about them made all the choices
Lol isn't that how the world works though? Haha
@@Fishtory Lol literally . It sucks
Aren't most of these with all the different patterns manmade?
No. Actually only 3 of the plecos i showed are man made lines
