    Dude! I am confident this is what's happenig with my car! The SLOWEST coolant leak, I top it up once every 6 months. I have smelt coolant coming from the engine bay. Iv'e had the water pump replaced, I am going to try this next. Genius video, cheers!

    Appreciate your video. Love for dubs doesn’t have to be overshadowed. Like you did, have a pressure tester always on hand and build in more maintenance for modern brittle.

    Appreciate this. My oil cooler gasket failed, going to do that plus the billet coolant union adapter and this coolant fitting from EMD.

      @@RLT I did! Actually my mechanic did. A month or so ago I smelled oil on and off while driving the car. Took it in for an oil change today and he noticed the leak, plus a little bit of oil in the coolant. I figured while he does the oil cooler and gaskets, I should upgrade the fitting as well! How are things holding up? Now i’m contemplating on having him do the thermostat housing and water pump at the same time. I’m at 75,000 miles and coincidentally today marks me owning the car for 10 years. Ordered new in May 2014 and took delivery 9/25/2014.

    Yay. This is what I will be spending the day on today! There is coolant pissing all over the turbo manifold. It’s been decent so far, but the flaws have all been related to the use of plastics.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  9 месяцев назад

      The amount of plastic I’ve replaced on this car is genuinely amazing. Even the rear swaybar links are plastic! That’s next on my list lol. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    THIS. Yup. I replaced my plastic coolant flange with an aluminum version last week & voila, coolant leaks seem to be resolved! I was simply lucky in that I planned this replacement away from plastic as it was located near a planned turbo swap to HPA's IS38.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  11 месяцев назад

      IS38 is such a good mod! What power figure are you going after?

      @@RLT I think I'm right about where I want to be now. I'm full bolt on save a downpipe, so my best guess is somewhere between 340-380 whp. I'm hesitant to run afoul of emissions here in Illinois which is the reason for the OEM downpipe. I've done a ton of mods both engine & handling and the car is truly a blast to drive. As an aside, consider an aluminum oil pan if you're not fond of VW's love of plastic. I have much better piece of mind with it on (& a skip plate). I have a ridiculous amount of fun driving a hatchback every day. I've got a SUV for when I want to drive like an adult.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  11 месяцев назад

      @jpchampine6992 I’ve done a metal oil pan on my car because I got hit by some debris and the plastic one started leaking. We took the plastic pan out to a friends range and destroyed it with a shotgun lol. As for the downpipe I feel your pain my area of PA is one of two in the state that does emissions testing.

    Thats a T30 torx bolt. Have a mystery leak on my ‘16 as well. Been losing max>min line on expansion tank about every week. Had seen something about a coolant leak near turbo when researching water pump leaks. Was looking back there and saw obvious signs of coolant leakage ontop of turbo exhaust manifold. Also some red crusty bits. Picked this part up and going to replace to see if that solves it. If so, cheap and easy fix!
    H20 pump was done 30k ago so I was suspicious that would already be leaking again.

    • @RLT

      Fortunately this fixed my coolant leak, but it was kind of a shot in the dark for me. I dread having to do the water pump on this car.

    Just looked up this video to see where the 034 version I bought goes. And yes, mine does have some signs of leaking. I bought at the same time as the coolant shut off valve, which was so corroded it was throwing a codes.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  6 месяцев назад

      I haven’t needed to do the shut off yet but my secondary electric pump has failed recently causing codes. It’s a game of wack-a-mole with these cars sometimes.

    Did you take off the nut on the ignition coil ground for this fix? Just thought I'd ask because I noticed the nut is missing!

    I had the same issue and ended buying it on Aliexpress. Just type there the part number and you have the plastic ones and the aluminum ones. I bught mine on aluminum for 8 euro.

    • @RLT

  • @derekjlight

    It's funny that you have those clamps on all of your coolant hoses. I have those spring clamps that rely only on the "pinch" rather than tightening them by hand. I put the billet adapter in and it leaks because the clamps aren't tight enough. What year is your GTI so I can get the other style clamps?

    • @RLT
      @RLT  3 месяца назад

      I’m actually glad you said this because I was wondering if they were OEM or not. My car is a 2016, however it had been modified and then later unmodified by the previous owner which is where the worm clamps came from. They are most likely just parts store spec clamps and they seem to work just fine.

    • @derekjlight
      @derekjlight 3 месяца назад

      @@RLT gotcha. I personally do not like the factory clamps because they can only get so tight. If you loosen them too much with a pair of pliers, they will not grip the hose as well as these.

    Was there no dried up pink crust at the area of the leak? Most VW leaks I have dealt with had that at the trouble spot, even if no wet spot was observed.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  11 месяцев назад

      You know I don’t know actually. I observed a puddle back there while I was pressure testing the cooling system looking for leaks. I sort of wonder if the extreme heat causes it to boil away completely. Another possibility might be that the coolant is allowed to slip down the back of the block meaning you will not see it unless you pull the engine. Also you know how these cars are there could be oil caked in there from who knows where. Maybe someone smarter than I could give an answer.

    I lose 100 ml of coolant in 2 months is this normal?

    • @RLT
      @RLT  17 дней назад +1

      That seems like a small enough amount to not worry about. It could be the coolant barb or maybe your thermostat housing/ water pump are seeping. Personally I wouldn’t worry about it, but I would get some professional advice rather than take what I say as gospel. Good luck, thanks for watching!
