I think we Canadians should thank you and your fellow railfans for the great restoration job that has been done to the Dominion of Canada. The last time I saw her was about 20 years ago in one of the back storage sheds at the Canadian Railway Museum (now ExpoRail). She looked pretty sad stored away. Bravo for the great job! 02:35 AM EDT
And we want to thank you in advance for recognising one very important thing: It belongs to us. Not that the Canadians are willing to admit it. Because we'll never get it back in the immediately forseeable future.
Nice video! Cool fact - after looking through old photos from a while back, it turns out that I was actually there without realising! Just a toddler in a pram lol
kind sir thank you so much for posting this wonderful video of a most beautiful steam engine i throughly enjoyed it congratulations on a job well done.
Cheers Jeff ........yes I think the sponsorship is vital for these events, Hopefully the headboard issue is looked at for the future events in October and February14
Thanks very much Alistair. The queues have been huge so far and at one point on Saturday I heard they stopped admissions for a while as the building was so full of people. I think you will have a better time on Tuesday when you go. I hope you have a great day out there. Allan.
I think why Mallards record is recognised worldwide is that it had an accurate official measurement car on the train and 7002 was based on only 2 separate time measurements by two separate observers over a short distance and was much more difficult to verify. Thanks for watching and commenting and making that interesting point.
Thanks very much Ken. The 94mph run is proof of what great steam locos these still are. It was a super day today at the NRM. I hope you have a great holiday Ken. Best wishes - Allan.
Excellent video Allan. Agree about the headboard comments but the Hornby sponsorship is a sign of the times I think. Good vantage for the Mallard movement onto the turntable. Cheers, Jeff.
Thanks very much for viewing. I am pleased you enjoyed this magnificent event. It was indeed a memorable occassion and what a great job by the organisers, volunteers and everyone involved in making this happen. I remember Dominion of Canada at Darlington after withdrawal in the mid 1960s ..... I never thought I would ever see it again after it was sent across the Atlantic. Cheers - Allan.
wonderful video Allan - I was hoping you'd be covering the event! I was excited to hear that Bittern touched 94mph on the special run! what a potentiial these A4s have for high speed runs! Enjoying our holiday break in Prestatyn. Well done Allan! Cheers. Ken
Nice video Allan, It will be nice to see them on Tuesday this week. When I was out and about yesterday at the Stainmore Preserved railway in Kirkby Stephen I was told it had been renamed from the Great Gathering to the Great Queuing because of the numbers trying to get in. I hope it’s not that bad on Tuesday.
The line up of all 6 A4s will be on again from 26th October to 6th November 2013 at York NRM. They were only all together for 2 weeks earlier in the summer. They can also be seen at Shildon Locomotion Museum, Co. Durham, in February 2014. Hope this helps. Allan.
It was a magnificent do. Was there on the 3rd (afternoon) and 4th (morning) - I was almost in tears. For 40 years I'd dreamed of this, never thinking that it could ever happen. Canada was like a ghost...just wish the Coronation set was still preserved. Why wasn't the observation car put back into 1937 nick? A magnificent couple of days,, which I'll never, ever forget.
Cheers Jason, yes Hornby were sponsors of the event. I think they could have used a variety of headboards on the different A4s to show the traditional train names that were about in the golden age of steam hauled services. It was disappointing the see the headboards all the same for an event like this and not relevant to the old era.
Oh, I realize I am spitting into the wind. Rail enthusiasts at the time debated it at length. Even into the 1970s, British writer Patrick Whitehouse gave credit to the DRG Baltic type. However, people prefer to believe the legend when it suits their purpose. And who will defend a locomotive in Nazi Germany?
great video, sick of seeing the HORNBY logo now though, superb locos,,,by the way is evening star still owned by david shepperd,or has the railway museum bought it.
Mallard is, And always will be, the very first steam locomotive to go 126mph on the slight downward grade of Stoke Bank on 3rd July 1938. She broke the record and has held on to it since. She is the fastest steam train in the world and will always be whether you like it or not!
@@KCSRailstudios What do you mean "Until 2030"? There are restrictions on the speeds steam traction can go up to thoughout the world. And I'm pretty sure that no one is even going to try and beat Mallard.
Have you heard about the PRR T1? They are building it from scratch and will be finished by 2030. They have 2 places where it’s just long straight track that they are going to let the t1 run on and beat mallards record.
Another great video Allan, were up on Saturday, looking forward to immensely. Wish people would stop criticizing the headboards & sponsership though, it's the sponsers that make this possible, who paid to get Dwight and Dominion over here???. They need sponsers and sponsers need advertising. At least the loco' weren't drapped in Hornby banners. Sorry to rant Allan. Great vid.
Is Hornby sponsoring it by any chance? :P Talk about overdoing advertising, even the shunter had it on in big letters! Those headboards on every loco is unnecessary too especially with the same text on. Great video though, I do plan on getting down there at some point.
My dad visited the NRM the other day hoping to see all of the 6 a4s lined up as I heard they were there, but there were only 3 on display - Bittern, Dominion of Canada and Dwight D. Eisenhower. I thought they were there until the autumn (October time). Does anyone know where the other 3 are now?
Thanks for your interesting comment. Its always been an interesting debate and I don't think I am the one to prove or disprove the science of it all but I believe 'Mallard's' record will always be recognised worldwide as the OFFICIAL record at 125.88 MPH, despite the gradient.
Actually you are wrong. The Diesel shunter at 1:11 is actually a class 09. 09017 is the NRM's own diesel shunter and is in a Maroon livery with the NRM logo on each side. I also have a Hornby Railroad model of this locomotive.
I would like to take this time to make a couple of very important points: 1. Mallard IS the fastest steam locomotive in the world, not that German thing. The gradient and load doesn't mean shit. 126 MPH is faster than 124. Stop being so butthurt about it. 2. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada rightfully belong here and here alone. They were saved from scrap, yes, and for that we are grateful, but what we're NOT grateful for is their refusal to give them back permanently, and just shoving them in a shed to rot, or being stared at by bemused Americans. When the Harry Potter people couldn't have Olton Hall, they made do with a remarkably realistic wooden replica, and I'm disappointed the same logic wasn't employed here. Rant over, thank you for listening and I apologise in advance for any offense this causes. Matty :)
WHY MALLARD'S FEAT ISN'T THE SPEED RECORD: The feat was assisted by a considerable downhill grade -- 1 in 50 (0.5%). A grade of that magnitude not only cancels out normal rolling resistance but also provides a positive push. (There is still air resistance to contend with.) Speed records MUST be made on near-level track. The world steam speed record was set in Nazi Germany -- which is why the British and rest of the world want to forget it. 124.1 mph on level track by a streamlined 4-6-4.
Rail record have always and always will be counted on grades, that's the way it always was done, this loco in just one attempt beat the german record and had to slow down quite sharpish due to a temporary 15mph limit it had to content with. It was also hauling 7 coaches when it beat the previous german record, compared to 4 by pulled by the germans.

Some great clips Allan, like how the BR livery ones are in order. 4489's bell wasn't quite right though.

Great record of the events. no doubt these two weeks will be looked back on with horror in 25 years time as the NRM wonder how to beat it!

Why did they turn it tender facing the audience? They should have had the front facing us!
That's a good question. Not sure of the answer but hopefully someone will enlighten us as to why? Allan.

out of all the a4s, why isn't mallard back in steam with the others.
