I’d heard of this case before, several times, but no one begins the tale with the victim, her personality, her life. Everyone starts with the poisoning and what came after. Thanks for painting such a vivid picture of Peggy as a person. What was done to her was just horrific.
I think thats why I just love what he does with his story telling. Theyre not victims or statistics, theyre people with lives and loved ones who miss them. No one else ever tells us about who they were and often times theyre just reduced to nameless victims.
I always admire the True Crime channels that put the victim in the forefront as opposed to only mentioning the victim when describing their brutal end.
So what killed the woman and hurt the kids in the first story?? Did I miss it? I just heard it's well known, it's got a cure, but it was too late for the mother... Anyone know what caused it?

For anyone wondering what thallium is. Thallium is a heavy metal used in the manufacture of electronic components, optical lenses, semiconductor materials, alloys, gamma radiation detection equipment, imitation jewelry, artist's paints, low temperature thermometers, and green fireworks. How I know all this is because I use to help my ex boyfriend cook meth. I've been clean 8 years 2 months and 11 days. All without going to jail. My husband saved my life.

Yes!! I can’t believe this wasn’t mentioned. If anyone is interested Let’s Read does a recap of this story too. It mentions that. My man BALLEN is so good at these stories but let’s read is amazing too and way better to listen to as you drift to sleep….his voice is bar none
The moment you introduced how sherry was super attached to George and Diana I thought that it must have been her who committed the crime but when you revealed that she was the one solving it I was in real astonishment. Wow the way you give voice to these stories is impeccable
Yeah, I originally thought- oh geeze, mentally focused nerds- these people must be harmless and therefore the good guys…. But that annoying Susan must be the killer! If she couldn’t get her life together in Texas- I bet she met the family and killed them having met the mother at the diner! ….and then MrBallen explained the truth and I felt totally hoodwinked and bad for misjudging Susan- who was apparently a complete badass and the hero of this sad situation. It’s sickening that Diana somehow is still out there being a vile Karen of a creature.

This is such amazing story telling, the first half of the video I was convinced it was Pie. Then for the second half I was 100% thinking it had to be ‘Sherry’ because of her interest in how George used thallium in the fake murder. Also how you set her up as this crazy woman who wanted to be friends with this ‘lovey couple’. The last 7 minutes? Susan may not have been "Mensa" smart but she was definitely smarter than George. My heart goes out to Peggy and her kids. I can't imagine going through something like this. You make even your ads entertaining!
"Smart" is actually not defined properly in American system. American system just evaluates vocabulary and a miniscule set of drab computational skills. When you look at eastern cultures, smart is a compilation of not just academic smartness but also application, innovation, emotional intelligence, social inteeligence, ethical intelligence, abstract thinking, big picture thinking, cross linking various aspects of life and occupations, personal responsibility, sensibility to different cultures, awareness of various perspectives, resourcefulness etc etc etc. I mean there are entire books on just each one of these subjects. In the grand scheme of things she was probs smarter than all of those people who are basically just good test takers.

I can't remember why I know about thallium poisoning, but as soon as you said poison tests came back negative I had a strong feeling it was thallium poisoning, and when the Mensa portion got to the "perfect crime" game I was sure of it.
I remembered the case from an ID channel program but couldn't remember the name if the poison. But if not mistaken, they way they put it is the guy used the woman sherry as a scapegoat to draw suspicion away from himself even so far as to pretend to want to date her and actually blackmailed her somehow to help him. Not sure but thats what i remember of it.
My mind didn't go to thallium, but I recalled an episode of House where a woman poisoned her husband with gold of all things. So I was wondering if a heavy metal of some kind was involved.

Thalium was used in an assassination attempt by the South African security police under Apartheid in 1982. They detained Eastern Cape student activist Siphiwo Mthimkhulu and poisoned him, knowing that the effects of the poison would manifest later when he was no longer in custody thus allowing the security police deniability. Luckily he was rushed to a good hospital in Cape Town where a neurologist was able to diagnose him in time. He proceeded to sue the minister of Police which was a great embarrassment to the apartheid state. This ultimately led to his direct 'elimination' by the security police.

And this is why Mr. Ballen brings in the big numbers kids. The whole structure telling of this story is unreal, unpredictable and giftedly told. This is more than just storytelling and relaying information. This is a master class in cerebral entertainment through old school storytelling.
I just commented on another comment…. I totally agree! On other channels, I kinda get disappointed when they tell so much in the intro that we already know what’s going to happen. I actually commented this exact thing and one person replied to me with what I said was “totally inappropriate!” Maybe I chose my words unwisely (although I don’t think I did) but I still think that I am allowed to have an opinion on the format that I prefer. This case Mr. B shared with us, is exactly the way I prefer listening to these unfortunate cases.

I've never heard this version of the story. I heard the coke was left on the front porch and one of the family member took it inside once seeing it sitting there. I never heard that he broke into their home and placed the coke in the pantry. Also they showed where the bottle tops were removed and only could be seen that the tops were removed from looking at them under a microscope which showed tiny scrape marks...George had painstakingly pried each top off and then used his bottle capper to put them back on. I think the wife knew, but they couldn't prove it. I think this story was on 60 minutes.

I'm sure he's right. Mr. Ballen is a warm hearted person, so his descriptions of painful deaths never sound as bad as they really are. I had heard of this case, and two things stood out: the excruciating death of the mother, and the culpability of the murderer's wife, who got off scot free.

That twist.. wow. I could not see that coming at all and was so confused when the police turned up at the house just after she entered. Masterfully done. You even had me pondering if it was Pye's ex-girlfriend who came back on the scene briefly. I think this is the best story you've told to date.
For George, thinking he was so much smarter than everyone, he ended up being played like a fiddle by Susan. Kudos to her for outsmarting the MENSA genius. Obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Susan deserves an Academy Award. I am obsessed with true crime so, I have often heard the stories you cover before. That fact is irrelevant as your method of storytelling is so clever that I listen anyway. The journey you take us on is so much fun even if I already know the plot. Thank you sir.

They're not geniuses at all, they're just good at IQ tests, which means diddly squat in real life. Great story, Mr Ballen. 3000 years ago you'd have been a Homeric bard holding your listeners entnralled as you recited your tales.
Exactly. I worked for a guy who was a member of Mensa. He had his office at home so you were in his home alone with him all day. I could write a book on the weirdness. I felt so uncomfortable around him I lasted a few months then got the heck out.
Me too; I seen this on tv before; the whole time he kept showing George face I was like he looks like a killer; like seen him before. I forgot the story though and when he got to the coca cola everthing started coming back to me.

So many things. First, I love these stories. I'm obsessed. Thank you, Mr. Ballen. Second, and I don't typically discuss this, but it seems pertinent, so...I'm a member of Mensa, and I'm furious that my chapter doesn't host a regular "murder mystery weekend." Sternly worded letter incoming. Finally, I have never heard this story make the rounds, and while I can understand why the org doesn't advertise it, I'm stunned that it's not discussed and analyzed behind proverbially closed doors at every gathering! Anyway, what a twist ending! Thank you for sharing!

The podcast 'Small Town Murder' did a good job covering this case.
I always admire the True Crime channels that put the victim in the forefront as opposed to only mentioning the victim when describing their brutal end.

I can't fathom how completely terrifying and horrific Peggy's suffering was. It breaks my heart hearing the pain she was in for months on end.
I was quite confused what is going on with her, why is she so resitant to medical treatment? Is it because it is expensive?
@@1mol831 I believe it was because she had 50,000 times the amount of Thallium in her system. Pain medication wouldn't/couldn't touch her.
@@HypocrisyHuntress This.
As well as the fact that no one knew it was thallium poisoning until it was far too late, there was no way for them to give the correct treatments in time. They could only apply general medications to treat the pain, which of course did not do much due to the severe amount of thallium in her system.

@@cpmow831 there's a good chunk of cases that took alot of dedication from law enforcement to private eyes that some have lasted years. Nowhere near as exciting as the cases we see here on YT, and not even the great JCS could fathom the extent of their methods .
I thought she was the murderer. Faked me out.
@@pargolf3158 I was biting into that same biscuit. Tried to figure out the connection of her to them, and not the suspects. Very interesting story telling.
@@pargolf3158 especially with the “It’s DOCTOR” thing. She probably was involved. Hubby wouldn’t have had that knowledge. The doctor might have
Awesome job Detective Susan. So sad that Peggy lost her life all because neighbors didn't like her. Sometimes people are too smart for their own good. Thank you for always telling us stories in a riveting way, Mr. Ballen! We all love listening to each of your updates.
@dliguori25 Susan was the woman who got close to the murderers...
I'm so glad that Susan exists! She really did an amazing thing catching George so that he's never able to ever kill or hurt anyone ever again. I'm so glad that the two boys survived, when I heard they got sick too, I was really scared that they also weren't going to make it. I hope Peggy rests in peace.
MENSA have high logical intelligence, but not emotional intelligence. The detective took advantage of George’s low Emotional Quotient and how easy it was to flatter him
.
maybe the neighbours should’ve been quiet 🤫
I like how John is just chilling in a garage while telling one of the most terrifying stories I’ve ever heard in my entire life💀

Just wanted to let you know that I think this is your best story from the way you told it so far. It started at such a random point and then it all came together in one nice bow. Thank you for your hard work.
Einstein never took an IQ test because he believed you cannot quantify ones intelligence by any known test. He believed that passion in a particular subject could make almost anyone a genius in that field of expertise
Wow you know so much about him, did he tell you this personally?
@@CharlieBrown-mx4gq this is an absurd statement. By your logic something can't be true unless you heard it straight from a persons mouth? This is exactly what's wrong with this country. World I should say.
@@CharlieBrown-mx4gq
Something like knowing multiple languages is not tested for in your IQ testes is it fair to say that someone who knows more languages is more intelligent oh no it doesn't fall into that racial narratives let's erase this shit.
@Nathan Weeks Best reply, I agree entirely.
