Beauty: A Bad Investment | Kjerstin Gruys | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • Highly attractive people enjoy a lot of unearned perks in life, and appearance discrimination is a serious social problem. However, beauty is not a strong predictor of happiness or life satisfaction. Dr. Kjerstin Gruys explains why investing in appearance is an exercise in diminishing returns, and why we should be investing more in our social relationships instead. Dr. Kjerstin Gruys is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at University of Nevada, Reno and author of Mirror, Mirror, OFF the Wall: How I Learned to Love My Body By Not Looking at It for a Year (Avery, 2013), which received a coveted "starred review" from Publisher's Weekly. Her sociological research broadly explores the relationship between physical appearance and social inequality, with a particular focus on gender as it intersects with race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, and age. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Lovely talk & presenter! When she talked about happiness, it reminded me of something I read recently... 50 people at a seminar were asked to enter a room filled with balloons. They were told to write their name on a balloon. The balloons were then placed in another room and the participants were told to find their balloon within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching, pushing, colliding with others & there was utter chaos. At the end of 5 minutes, not many had found their own balloon and many were frustrated.
The rules then changed- now each one was told to randomly pick up a balloon and find the person whose name was on it. Each participant was matched to their balloon in minutes.
The speaker pointed out this is what is happening in our lives...
Everyone is frantically looking around for their own happiness not knowing where it is but our happiness lies in the happiness of others. If you give away happiness, you will get your own.

I liked this well balanced talk. I find most talks on beauty are on the extreme ends of the spectrum- beauty is all that matters vs beauty doesn't matter at all. I do think investing in your beauty and appearance is important as it reflects how you think and carry yourself. It's also important that it is not treated as the be all end all.

Please. The perpetuation of the species, like all animals, starts with attraction to a quality mate. Attractiveness is part of that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yes - but no one’s relationship ever started with “well, I thought he/she was hideous, but...”

This talk in wider perspective is good, beauty matters but it isn't everything. We all do need to have a point of diminishing returns when investing in our appearance for sure.
Also some people here in comment section need to watch this entire talk before making a rhetoric statements like "why is she wearing makeup?then or how misleading the title is" If you can't, then don't comment and judge.

“This isn’t a hard science” but neither is happiness. I only point this out to say that it seems to me the speaker says beauty isn’t a hard science as a means to take away from the understanding of beauty as an important predictor of success but then doesn’t seem to acknowledge the same lack of hard science as a problem to the happiness perspective.

Beauty is not a bad investment. We all want to improve our appearance, it makes us feel like we are making an effort and care about ourselves. Also beautiful clothes make us look fantastically beautiful.

  • @irinisce

aww. tell that to beauty companies, modelling companies, artist agencies. "being attractive might increase the chance for someone two swipe you right" well the more people I socialize with the more likely I will find better quality in my relationship, no??? I believe that self-care should be the priority instead, but saying "beauty is bad investment" is kinda reaching. some careers also obligate you to do beauty to the extreme. can you blame these people? for using beauty as a 'painful tool' instead of a 'fun tool'?

  • @michelemorselli7047

Being beautiful is central. Your face determines how other treats you. This determines personality. If we get every knowledge empirically, then every opinion about the others and ourselves is based, at least at the start, on beauty. Then, it's feedback loops, where our feelings determine how we act, others reaction determine our feelings, and so on, and that's how personality forms. It's all beauty. Just beauty.

It's an interesting point of view that certainly takes some weight off many people's shoulders. However, one shouldn't underestimate the power to change your body and thus your appearance in order to feel better. For some people, achieving a dream body brings you a great sense of satisfaction. Of course, you have to have fun during the process and enjoy the journey, but you will also be extremely happy to see yourself in the mirror after some time of hard work.
In order to really change, though, you have to do things by the book. This requires a level of commitment that very few have and, especially a degree of knowledge that even fewer people have. So, love yourself, whatever your appearance, but don't be ashamed or afraid to embark on a responsible end beautiful journey of change if that's how you feel. My opinion

Of course she can express herself through her hair without doing so to be beautiful or more attractive. I’ve dyed my hair green because I felt like dying it green, not because of how it looked (I wouldn’t have dyed it green if I wanted to look good). So please don’t generalize or assume.
