🤗Best video you have ever done.... I have owned 6 USDM AE86's (doing an engine rebuild on #6 now) and can't see myself without one. Stock, built, or in between... one of the funest cars you can own with more down sides than anything it competes with. Under powered, high cost to maintain as you modify, parts are getting harder to find, and generally one of the worst daily driven cars you can drive these days. But I love them and cant get enough. Enjoy it sir. I have had years of smiles and cant wait to get mine back on track.
FYI... If you lowered it on the BC coilovers, your funny steering feeling may be fixed with a set of RCA's to adjust the steering geometry back to normal. These cars were designed to sit high in the air and once you drop them the geometry goes way out of wack. Easy to find online.
ITB's!!! 20v or 16v... it don't matter. Once you've heard that sound that's louder than your exhaust, your hair stands up every time you rev it. My current one revs to 9500 rpms (when running) and I miss the sound so much. Can't wait to get it back.

To get your bottom end back check the TVIS on the intake, it is almost certainly not working. The TVIS is operated by a vacuum solenoid in the middle of the bottom side of the intake. Probably either has a vacuum leak or is disconnected all together. A lot of people thought if you unhook it then the valve stays open for more hp and really all you do is kill your bottom end power.

Iv daly driven that since. 20 months ago, I bought an frs and only put 4000 miles in road trips since then. In February this year, I put a 2gr v6 in the mr2 and while I still love the car, I can't just peddle down whenever I want. I hit 103 at the top of 3rd, 7200rpm. Its nice to beat Sti's and Chargers, but it lost a bit of that old soul, the old engine sat on its butt till 5000 and took off till 6. Since I daily, I made the right choice with the v6, but if it wasn't my daily, I'd do a beams swap with a turbo. light boost, quick spool. (I also hate only having 5 gears still....)

Modern cars have literally engineered all the personality and charm completely out of what makes cars "special". They've gone from these wonderful pieces of artistry and experience to what essentially boils down to a hammer or laptop :/ Just a tool that is finely made, and very good at its job, but you just can't form any sort of attachment to it because it's completely and utterly JUST an inanimate object on every level.

smiles per hour is a great way to justify how you feel about the car. if the car doesn't make you smile when you drive it, time to find something new :) good stuff. love the hachi roku vibes

Nice to know I'm not the only thing from 1985 that's in slightly ropey condition, been through some sh*t and is in desperate need of a rebuild...🤣
A NA four pot revving to the moon is one of the happiest car noises. A supercharger is glorious, V10s are the GOAT, but a little revy 4-Pot bouncing its valves off the underside of the bonnet it a noise that is very underappreciated.
Jimmy has basically just explained being a car enthusiast: Was it way too expensive? Yes. Was it worth it financially? No. Does it make you smile? Oh heck yes.

Early 4AGEs, like yours have TVIS to compensate for the massive inlet ports in the head, it’s essentially a set of butterfly valves between the manifold and head that open under engine vacuum above 5k or so, hence the turbo like feel when you rev it to the moon!
I would also agree that the BC’s feel a bit over damped, I have different spring rates to try in the front of mine when I get the chance

Honestly £15000 seems like a pretty decent price for one of these, here in NZ where we got all the JDM goodies since day 1 they all go for around $50K NZD which is roughly £25K.
Jimmer if you like those low displacement, high revving engines I highly recommend having a go in a honda with a B series engine, my DC2 Integra does exactly the same thing you describe that 4AGE doing and I agree entirely, its incredibly fun.

I had my red over black AE86 levin GT apex for a little over a year. paid 10k for it. they really can do everything. It feels like a proper classic car, its practical enough to daily, doesnt drink fuel, fairly reliable for a 40 year old car, its fun to drive, has enough performance to put a smile on your face, it does skids, it sounds cool, makes you feel cool and you get all kinda of different people wanting to talk to you about the car. you can take it to a classic car show or the shops or a track day and still have fun

Great purchase and I'm really happy for you.
I still own the bigger brother of the AE86 of that era, the mk3 Supra. Was my first car and still have it after all this time, 18 years and counting.
Modifications are easy, working on it is easy and parts availability is still around, and most importantly, driving a car without electronics interfering in everything you do is priceless.
    Never selling it. 😃👍

Kelford 193b cams really wake up the 4age for relatively cheap. You can adapt the silvertop or blacktop itbs to the 16v easily, and you'll have an excellent build! Id reccomend checking out garage 4age for different combinations of parts to try

Hell yeah Jimmer so excited to see plans! I'd highly suggest going 4AGE blacktop with some cams, you could safely get 200bhp with a good ecu and you'd have all the 9000rpm 4AGE experience you need with a bit more speed. Great value for money swap and there's plenty of info on doing it.
