  • My advice on choosing your first rotary rock tumbler by looking at the barrels - steel, plastic or rubber. This is purely based on my own experiences.

For an apartment dweller putting the tumbler in a cooler would prevent spills and help reduce the sound level, don't you think?

Only problem with a cooler is it will retain the heat. Keep an eye on it, that it doesn't get too warm.

Looking a a tumbler with a clear polycarbonate barrel. Do you think it will hold up ok? I imagine it will be noisier than a rubber barrel. Should I go for a 3lb or 5lb tumbler?

They are sold on Wish.com if you are patient (shipping from China tends to take a while). That said, I suspect you won't be happy. I have never tried one, but one of my viewers from Poland got one from somewhere and didn't like it.
As for size of barrel, it depends upon the quality and size of rock you want to tumble. A 5 lb barrel takes larger and more rock than a 3 lb. If you don't have easy access to rock, then you probably want to consider the smaller barrel.

I had a toy plastic tumbler. Eventually it broke due to some foam chemical reaction that I thought was caused by the fluorine in Fluorite reacting with any of the powders used for the tumbler or something else. What do you think?

I have tumbled fluorite but never had a chemical reaction. However, some rock will give off gas when tumbling and you need to release it. My plastic tumblers just wore out from the abrasion of the rocks.

A parts tumbler will work...they look something like a portable cement mixer

Seems like someone has a grudge against the plastic tumblers, lol I hate them too, they never have actually worked for me, they always leak mid tumble, I’ve only gotten as far to prepolish before I noticed the tumbler sounds loud, I walk into the room, water everywhere, all over the carpet, now if I ever want to get the grit out of my carpet I’ll have to recarpet the whole room.

I bought a plastic tumbler new plus a few that were in garage sales. All of them failed.

If I had the money I would buy a loratone but I love on disability benefits so I have such a small budget I'm having to buy a harbour Freight.

I think you will do fine with a HF. The rocks don't care once they are inside. Good luck with your projects
