I'm from a Southeast Asian country boarding southern China. I practice a healthy life style and is very happy with my healthy brown skin. A few weeks ago, I commented on a Korean RUclips video of a Korean man and his White wife visiting his Korean aunt in the countryside. It so happened that the aunt's skin was almost as brown as mine, so I stated that I didn't know that Korean people could be that brown. I also mentioned how healthy she looked. Within minutes, I received a deluge of hate comments accusing me of being envious of Korean fare skins. I even received a few comments about how Southeast Asian are born brown, and Korean a born white.

From what I hear about the Koreans and the Japanese (and maybe the Chinese too) is that they are very racist to people with darker skintones and to their own people as well because many of them aren't pale. You see it with kpop idols all the time too how they whitewash them to the point that they look paper white and ghostly.
Now as to why that is the case I guess that East Asians never rejected the paleness = wealth thing like europeans did and because they are somewhat paler than southeast Asians they probably see it as a sign of superiority against other Asians.
Also let's not forget that the Japanese were considered honorary aryans by Hitler because they were with the axis in ww2 and committed all sorts of atrocities.

I'm gen Z (age 22, black female). From ages 12-14 I'd pretend to be east Asian (online, through avatars), part of it was my interests in Japanese entertainment and fashion but another part was deeply rooted in self dislike. I say dislike because I am quite happy with my appearance but not my race. I dislike the stereotypes that come with my given race (I'm not African American but in the eyes of America black people are often perceived the same way, even by the politically correct who dont like to say "black" even though thats actually a correct identifier of myself compared to African American)
I've often envied being east asian because it comes with good stereotypes, ones that would overshadow any negative criticism. I enjoy being a minority with a distinct culture, and although I had that, my own personality and interests were mocked for not being black enough(not that my personality had a distinct culture, it just wasn't the narrow view of what a black person should be).
The most comforting solution has been being friends with other black women like me who have the same experience. Even seeing someone like Kid struggle with something similar gives me comfort and confidence in who I've been born into. Ironically (to this video) too, these recent years I've seen more "alternative" black women in media which is also very helpful.

True self agency and actualization is accepting your reality as a black human. The good, bad and ugly.
Until BLK folks accept who we are as a People, we will never live in own humanity or be validated. It is crucial you validate yourself and surround yourself with people who value you, it could take a lifetime, but having to reject yourself through false characters is hell on Earth 🙏🏾.

  • @chikari123
    @chikari123 9 месяцев назад +506

This sounds like a poor coping mechanism that is inevitable when it comes to the inner turmoil of confronting the girlhood and innocence yet completely detached chaos that gets crushed once you get older. Couple that with the general fetishization of East Asian women in relation to perceived character (aka innocence), infantilization , fetishization and in turn, retaliation it becomes…well this. The emphasis of not working and having pale skin and how that colorism persist today divorced from western beauty standards is worth noting. To the point where they’re just dolls and something to admire rather than someone active in their own life, no longer wanting to be in the driver seat of your own life but still needing the control. It’s an oxymoron when you get down to it and that’s why it’s a really shitty cope.
All of it heavily relies on dissociation, I’d say delusion but I’d bet most of these women are extremely self aware that’s why they glorify being NEETS, and a depression so deep they’re drowning with small gasps of air ever so often. It’s really dread inducing if you think about it, bizarre as fuck but I can see how this happened.

It won't magically cure your MH problems, but it will be a form of therapy and distraction, and eventually can be a powerful driver of growth. Playing an instrument or creating music gives life some meaning - you are connecting with an ethereal and mysterious universal truth that is very very real. You can create a tone or a song or a soundscape that has literally never existed before - you can birth something new into this world.
It's good for your cognitive functions and a life of learning is a life well lived. If you wish, at a certain stage in your progress you could play with other people and make connections, or keep the enjoyment as a personal journey.
I've struggled with poor MH and insomnia all my life, and I'd be dead now if I hadn't started playing and making music.
All the best in your journey.

So lain is this old anime about thechnology as this weird ghost like organism and drug. And throughout the show a girl called lain becomes slowly interested in the wired (internet in the show) after a girl in her class comitted suicide because of the wired and it kinda peaked lain‘s curiousity. And from there she kinda transforms mentally from someone very held back, quiet and docile to someone who is completely different online and irl and this then escalates to her real self and internet self both becoming real as she struggles to know who the real her actually is. And it‘s just a spiral until the finale of crazyness and surprising predictions about the internet from a time where that wasn‘t even a thing ppl had in their homes. But yeah you should really watch the show it‘s fairly short with only about 12 episodes or so and it‘s all amazing stuff. The show is called „serial experiments lain“ and as the name suggests lain is also multimedia meaning there is basically 2 versions of lain as a story out there. First the anime and second the video game that is also incredibly and I recommend playing it. There is a website with a fantranslation where you can play it. Do read a guide first tho or watch hazel‘s video about psx lain before playing cause the interface is really confusing. But yeah. You can also play that game entirely for free cause it‘s essentially a ps1 game reconstructed into a web page for you to play. There are very dark topics in that game tho so be cautious. Unlike the anime wich is mostly about a shy girl falling down a rabbithole of weird technology, pxs lain is about the same girl strugglimg with schizophrenia and visiting a therapist for it as she also slowly spirals out of reality into technology but while the anime is more uplifting towards the end the game is the opposite really. It‘s like a dark cousin of the same story but told differently. But yeah. Do check it out especially if the aesthetics of this video‘s topic speak to you cause lain is actually an incredible art project with a lot to say.

I'm a white person that lived in Korea for a while. I understand the cultural desire to be pale has nothing to do with Eurocentric beauty ideals, that it's something that existed for millenia in most parts of Asia. But, when it comes to eyelid surgery and V jaw surgery and nose thinning upturning surgery and wearing light colored contact lenses and lightening the hair, it makes you really wonder if it's really an Asian ideal or Eurocentric beauty standards, because I highly doubt it. From my untrained perspective the historical facial ideal was a round face, like I'm slightly chubby, but I naturally have a V-line jaw, but I'm of European decent, I'm not considered the standard beauty type at all where I'm from, but when I lived in Korea I was constantly being complemented on my bone structure and hairline and nose shape, things that are just genetic to me as someone with Northern European genetics. So it's really really hard for me to not see these beauty ideals in a lot of Asia as not being Eurocentric when I was constantly being told that since I wasn't from there I'd never understand

In East Asia, while traditionally fair skin was linked more closely to upper -class and wealthy elites, in the modern day, many people across Asia strongly associate white people with immense wealth. And so while people wish to insist that the preference for a "Western-style" appearance is not in fact racist, it is indeed racist in that people in Asia use these physical features in combination with ideas of whiteness as proxies to ideas of socioeconomic success. In East Asia, people rarely question the place of white people at the top of the perceived world hierarchy, and much of these attitudes were established by British colonialism in the 19th century and America's dominance in the 20th century.

an interesting fact is that behind this there is a large community of trans-humanists basing much of their ideological compass and internet persona on an anime called serial experiments lain, which covers themes of this inevitable passing from a physical real world, to a "wired, interlinked, collective consciousness". serial experiments lain predicted and continues to predict many realities that we live today as technology becomes a bigger part of our lives. these people use the parallels seen between this anime created in 1998 and modern society to cultivate cultish environments online. even for the people who aren't in so deep, these communities on the surface tend to seem like a supportive, accepting place for like-minded people but ultimately they become a bubble of fundamentally misdirected ideas, where lost kids and adults knowingly or unknowingly spiral each-other further into depression. the funny (and sad) thing is, the ending of the anime itself clearly rejects this trans-humanist ideal, warns against it, and shows the importance of real, physical human connections. everything about these movements is truly self contradictory

What you just said was quite interesting.
I've had realisations and thoughts like these over the years and never could articulate them.
One thing that made me start waking up to the dangers of technology was when social media became a thing and I saw how people started spiralling as a result of it. I'm talking about teenagers committing suicide, people filming mass shootings etc etc.
The creators of these platforms claim they're trying to make people feel closer and to bridge gaps and what not, but ever since social media and smartphones have become a thing people are lonelier, disconnected and sadder than they ever have been.
I genuinely think the Internet in its current form is a very distructive thing, it doesn't not incentivise authentic creativity, discourse and being one's true self. It's pretentious, it pulls you into echo chambers where you're encouraged to think you're okay cause "you're not the only one".
If we could make the net transparent and tied to ones real life without authoritarianism it could honestly be the best thing ever but I see it turning into a mirror image of the real world but on steroids. Which ultimately spells doom for all of us.

I speak of millenials, in particular, because we understand the specific trials of being adults during a specific time in our history and we understand what it was like to be children before the internet and the technology it inspired were ubiquitous. I actually also dislike the separation of generations - we're all in this together and we should be thinking about people at all stages of life and from many backgrounds. I remember news outlets calling my generation entitled when I was in middle school and being bewildered (and hurt) by how unreasonable and hostile their perspective was. I certainly don't wish to put that prejudice on other people. As a black woman addicted to the internet, which is the reason I love your content, I feel like the “black version” of this would be to make oneself extremely dark, as it portrays as more expensive, exotic, and eye catching. Making yourself “ethereal” and “Godly” looking would be the goal and the direct opposition to the asian standard “. Honestly, this community is relatable to me, as the internet basically raised me. As a brown skin american girl it is easy to come off as “average” even though I have features that are considered “pretty” in society. I remember when I worked at Sephora (which has inevitably and unconsciously amplified my “looksmaxxing” journey) an Asian woman I was helping said to me, “look at you, you have big eyes, small nose and perfect lips!” and in her eyes I saw that she wanted to say something close to, “If only you weren’t black/so dark.” At the time I wore a bob-style wig with chinese bangs and a full face of makeup, as well as eyelashes that made my almond shape eyes look more “Asian”-esque.
Overtime, interactions like these with “beautiful” Asian, Hispanic, and White woman made me angry in a way that influenced an “ethereal black girl” look I adopted. I wanted to “prove” to those women (and myself) that I did not want to be like them or look like them, and they were not MY standard of beauty.
I began to wear my natural hair big and curly, emphasizing it as much as I could while playing off of my features wearing less makeup, no lashes and going for a natural look that in a way, could not be achieved by other woman who were not of my race.
I feel like this “worked” and still works for me. Now I use a VERY DARK tanning mousse that gives my “normal-brown” olive undertoned skin a more rich, red-toned brown. I use 3-4 layers at once and leave it on for an entire 24 hours, putting it all over my body. When I walk into places with my fake tan, people STARE more than they would without it. Instead of streaky and unnatural as it would look on a lighter toned person, it is an automatic airbrushing of my skin. I look fake and glossy like a doll. I’ve had an Asian woman reach out and touch my skin to see if I had any makeup on, as she asked “how does your skin look like that?”
That gaze of “I am more beautiful than you” that I would get at Sephora from European and Asian woman who meet societal beauty standards was now emitted from myself - I could even pretend that the tan is naturally genetic.
Overall, it’s all very silly and catty and self centered and almost poisonous, but this is a real thing that is very close to the center of society.
I hope I make sense and don’t sound like a lunatic.

    • @neovxr
      @neovxr 8 месяцев назад +12

Totally makes sense. I'm a white old man, interested to understand people. Many women I met in my life had their own forms of "female instinct" and it caused a lot of trouble and suffering, naturally men and women are questioning each other and have to learn from the results.
There are traits in both, that are toxic to modern professional and political world, and to quality of lifestyle.
It seems that the more attempts of social engineering, and ideologic control of behaviors, the more bizarre and sick everything becomes.
The skill to deal with each other, probably cannot be engineered, only family and community can help to improve it. if there is existing healthy family and community.
People can act out their traits, and everyone understands, and sometimes smiles a bit. But extraordinary pride must suffer extraordinarily, this is the Karma. Sadly, it hits men not enough.
So, back to the topic, I think this is a lot about the little rituals of self-presentation, without trampling on someone else's self-esteem.
People are competitive and this creates a lot of conflict. Suddenly they become aware that there is a trade-off between being sensitive, and "winning". Maybe that's the pressure of evolution. To have kids and help them to do better in this, with less suffering, but eventually that's a tradeoff as well. Most philosophers told that the human being is not made to be happy all the time, and learns almost exclusively by suffering. Learning basic math is easy compared to that.

I was also pissed at the idea that I was supposed to alter myself to be a half assed version of a white, Hispanic or Asian woman. Despite my insecurities I always genuinely believed “I don’t actually want to look like them” “Why should I?” It almost felt like people were trying to take my black beauty away from me bc they know how beautiful black women could be embracing our beauty. I’ve never ever wore fake hair bc it was my message that I don’t want to look like them. Neither contacts or trying to alter my features severely. It was frustrating to have to think about what non-dark skin, non kinky haired African women would NEVER have to. After this video I finally feel like I have a bit more insight, so thank you. You are wonderful at explaining difficult topics in a way that I think most can understand, despite the difficult internet lango. It is sad yet interesting to see how people choose to handle their hopelesness that comes with a world seemingly in shambles. Is this because they have been raised online and therefore see the internet as their only reliable safe space? If they are of the younger generation living in a developed country where you can always be plugged in- they probably have never experienced life outside the online space. one note about chinese users in china: yes, there are many real people who use VPNs there and are indeed on twitter and instagram, but the huge user numbers mostly come from the CCP propaganda departments, as their bots.
and as for the topic, it's fascinating how a ubiquitous, simple cultural element shared by many asian cultures (the obsession with white skin, that, similar to old Britain, signifies class distinctions and is still very important to people there due to still present harsh economic disparities), becomes a marker of the trans-humanist movement and the identity war as soon as it comes in contact with the internet, twitter and tiktok specifically. How it morphs into something else and is now making the internet youth's brains fall apart, while they try to become "the higher race" (heard that somewhere already... ) and out-live the others online.. Something eerie and unpleasant about that

Fascinating. Haven’t finished yet I would also like to see your analysis of race in a lot more of these video essays in relation to how we use our preconceived notions and media perceptions to characterise folks under self fulfilling prophecies and whatnot.
For example black masculinity through the lense of historical narratives and the need to play up to them and how it impacts dating dynamics.
Like here there’s always been a white supremacy and East Asian influence in this dynamic of which is contrasted with the less “European” perceptions of others being seen as less pure and whatnot.
How this manifests in our culture and especially social media as we try to both monetise said perceptions and how they naturally change aswell.

Such a good video. This is first i'm hearing of this and I appreciate how you contextualize it. As a late/mid millenial, I can recall the beginning outlines of this (Network-Spirituality/Hyperreal-Embrace/Clearpill)-Accelerationism in the 2010s and the late 2000s.
If i was 10-13 years younger id probably be pretty attracted to this embrace of the absurdity that we see in the 'Hyperreal' (Hyperreal = Simulcra of what is Real, yet seemingly 'more real'). When i first saw Ghost in the Shell (og film, innocence, and sac), i fell in love with the idea of ditching this 'limited reality' in exchange for merging 'into the Net'.
Ironically it seems that the 'Red', 'Black', and 'Clear' pills are all just Blue pills in disguise- much like the story of the character Cipher from The Matrix film. They all assert the Hyperreallity of 'The Matrix' as unavoidable. Is this basically a logical evolution of what we call Capitalist Realism?
(I also appreciate that you note the undeniable role of Neo Liberal individualism, but make clear that it is a distinct mutation/consequence and not the same)

I’m pretty sure they don’t like white people, especially considering our horrible history of discrimination against them (and everyone else) for not fitting Eurocentric standards but why have they decided to emulate and try to take over racist belief systems that also harmed them?
I’ve even seen disgusting anti black sentiments and comments from them and sometimes I fear the horrors of history is going to repeat itself only this time it will be Asian. I belong to this online community, but I haven't heard of half the words you used, & I doubt my friends have either. I am a spiritual nihilist, a cyber-libertarian, a NEET, & a lover of Touhou, & I do "shitpost" sometimes as a practitioner of chaos magick, but I I have never heard of Milady or Remilia Corp before. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy learning new things.

This is about identity fluidity, not too different when done in other categories.

This "trend" was born because people are bored and are NEET, therefore they invent random weird stuff to spend their time. If they had a job or studied something, they wouldn't have time to waste with this clownery. 😭 I understand the escapism aspect, but I think there are healthier ways to escape the reality, like reading books for example. It's called "having a hobby".
Thank you for this video though, I wasn't aware of this goofy trend!

How interesting! I am a South American who looks like an Arab, you can't count how many times I have tried to pass on as a white person, as I just love nordic culture so much and resonate with its values to point of lamenting not being a tall, white, blue eyed guy. It also sucks how many Europeans think that non-Europeans are genetically adapated to be unintelligent degenerate chimps, I don't even understand why they try to elevate themselves by pushing others down so much. We all adapted to our environments, and some environments just suck more than others, but even living in the third world, I am not unfamiliar with great noble values, I don't think we are "incompatible" with them, as Europeans say. I am not going to call them racists even if they are (whites are also being discriminated a lot)but f them for treating us like crap.

Scandinavia (and Canada too) is probably the least racist place on earth (been here for decades). What you read on internet forums does not reflect reality

Fascinating deep dive - ty. You certainly earned my sub!
BTW I presume you know this, but the origin of the term “pilling” is the original Matrix movie, where the protagonist is offered a choice between swallowing a blue pill and remaining ignorant of the “real world” or a red pill and having the truth of the world revealed - even though it was completely out of their current frame of reference.
    Great movie - highly recommended.

My favourite personal take in all this is once I was mocked because I have small Asian eyes. Now people call it "nice cat eyes" and I'm just... OK... 😅

Even my own sibling (I'm the only kid with very noticeably small eyes, the one in the family, I got it straight from my grandpa, not even my father has them) mocked me for them.

To be fair, I accidentally found out that I apparently own a very popular eyes shape in Japan, but, also, where's the same energy when I was an actual child? Don't get me started with the whole "ching chong" because I look "very Chinese". Goodbye. 💀

As a southern European woman we tend to have larger hips butts and thighs than western europeans and 20 years ago this body type was considered fat and ugly but now it's "slim thick" 😂😂😂
The point is that bodytypes and facial characteristics come and in and out of fashion so rock whatever you got ❤
