I've always liked Viggen, ever since I was a little kid. There is something special about it I can't explain. In the early 90s, when you heard the sound, all kids ran out of the house, hoping to catch a glimpse of them :)
The current Swedish fighter Jas Gripen can also land and take off from any straight 500m road. Sweden is now returning to this kind of airbase thinking.
0:45. That road is 1 kilometer long. 1 km = 0.62137 miles. That's a road for the air force to land and refuel and to load the plane with new ammunition. That way the fighter pilot doesn't have to head back to the base for fuel and ammunition. 1:48. He said. Our bas for refueling and to reloading.
Just started playing DCS World and bought the Viggen as my first module. I wanted a plane that felt like flying in a death star trench with a Xwing fighter, and the Vigggen is that 😅❤

12:39 blows by stop sign... lol Saab is free of traffic laws (well if you have the Saab that arguably could have shot down an SR-71...) then cue Smoky and the Bandit music...
This has quickly become one of my favorite vids on youtube since I found it a couple months ago. Any idea if the air base featured in the movie can be still found on google maps? I assume it's no longer used.
Some of them are no longer in use but can still be seen on Google maps. This is probably not the same location but a similar one close to where I live. If you start from maps.app.goo.gl/AMjnjLpTLsKJRKMx8 and follow the road to the east until roughly maps.app.goo.gl/cHjjEcAtrgtUsMNr5 you can see a number of sideroads and staging positions on either side of the road. Some even still have the tree coverage from the top and the road present. And it is also coloquially called "Flygrakan" which roughly translates to the "Flight-straight"...
The simulator has the call sign "Olle zero two", "Olle" being the Swedish word (actually a surname, as most of the Swedish spelling alphabet) for the letter "O". That is the 15th letter in the alphabet so the simulator was most likely placed on the 15th air wing (F15) in Söderhamn. That also fits nicely with F15 Söderhamn being one of the wings equipped with SAAB 37 Viggen, and specifically the AJ37 variant (primary role being Attack ("A"), secondary role being fighter (J for "jakt")). The plane being serviced on the road base has a marking "15" on its nose - again indicating the F15 wing. Again suggesting this is an AJ37. The tail has a marking "23" so its callsign is "Olle twenty-three". It's likely, but in no way certain, that the road base is somewhere "close" (50 - 150 km?) to Söderhamn. Early in the film there is a completely standard Swedish road sign marked "UOM". If you'd drive all Swedish roads in the 1980s you might think that theres an awful lot of places named "UOM". But this is actually a sign indicating a specific area of the base: "U" is short for "underhåll" (I think?) (English "maintenance") and "OM" is short for "område" (Enhlish "area") so the sign is pointing towards the "mainenance area". Other areas of a base where "FRAMOM" ("främre område"/"forward area") and "BAKOM" ("bakre område"/"rear area"). At FRAMOM where a few stands, 2-4, for planes that where available for more or less immediate sortie. BAKOM was an area, usually a few kilometers from FRAMOM, with dispersed stands for several planes. (I live about 10 km from a disused BAKOM that has roughly 15 stands).
