Knollys Tunnel in Trinidad

- Knollys tunnel in Trinidad was built in 1898 to enable the railway line from Jemingham Junction, Cunupia to Tabaquite to go through one of the hills in the Central Range. It is 660 feet long and was designed by the then Director of Public Works Walsh Wrightson. The acting Governor at the time was Sir Courtenay Knollys. This tunnel is the only man made tunnel in Trinidad and Tobago and was quite the engineering feat of its time.

This has taken me back to the early 1960's when i uses to travel by T.G.R. to Brothers rd. And Reo Claro. For School Holidays ❤ real fun with my Great Grand Mother . And all my Father's Family . 😂
Thanks for making this video. I am a Guyanese Land Surveyor and worked for Williams, Bartholomew & Associates in Barataria. I surveyed that tunnel back in 1984. That area was all bush. Lots of bats lived in the tunnel with lots off quano (bat poop) on the ground. Totally dark is correct and we would lay boards to walk on and measure distance. Couldn't light a match (don't ask how I know that)... it would light up the methane gas. We used torch lights and mirrors to reflect light to see in there.
Really glad to see it turned into a tourist attraction. I'm now retired and living in Canada.... brought back memories and a smile. Thank you.

As a young man went through the tunnel over and over in the train to Rio Claro it was a great experience, it will be in my memory until there is no memory left in me.

My home town!!.it doesn't have bats as before. There were plenty more. But the fun long ago was walking through and shouting when we reach the middle 😂😂. That tunnel connects Tabaquite to Mitchell Gap Brasso village. My grand mother said her mother used to put them in the man hole to protect them from the train if they didn't cross in time to the other side.
