notebooks (like all commercial paper) actually have grain lines too! One of the first things I learned in my bookbinding apprenticeship was how to identify them because no matter how good your craftsmanship is if the grain of your paper and cardboard is wrong the pages will pucker and the cover tends to bend, this gets even worse if the grain of the cardboard and the paper you used to cover it do not match up. This is also the reason why I can not just use your fancy aquarell paper, fold it in half and sew those signature (=sheets) together, the grain would be wrong, my paper starting out needs to be either double the final size in short grain (which paper not specifically made for bookbinding is, like, never) or four times the final size of the book you want in order to be usable. Yes, I do get that question a lot when making custom sketchbooks since people want their favourite paper kind for those and I then need to try my best to source the biggest possible sheets of it.
I came to this channel because I have been wanting to revamp my dark vibes forest witch costume and I saw your lavender town witch cosplay shorts. I have been slowly navigating the sewing world and have learned about grain and what projects you can and can't use certain fabrics for (often the hard way). This is the first time I have heard "fiber" and "finish"! You literally just made everything click together in my mind. I love this channel, please continue :D
My mum will gift me a sewing machine and sewing lessons this Christmas. It's been years since I last touched the sewing machine. I'm getting really hyped up rn and it was just fun to watch you share what you love and even though I can't work with most of the advice here yet I'm sure it'll save me lots of time later when I struggle to just come back here. I'm so happy that RUclips just suddenly suggested your channel to me. Your shorts are really enjoyable to watch and they hype me up for when I'll finally start making my own cosplay and my own clothes. Thank you for sharing your love and passion here
Thank you for the great advice! I'm a total beginner sewer, but I feel like most of the advice applies to any kind of craft. The bit about choosing fabric reminds me of something I learned in a digital artist's video. She talked about how when she was young she got into art by drawing her favorite anime characters and the like, but how by college she felt like she needed to do "serious art." The thing she said I'll always remember was "I was improving faster when I was drawing for fun, because I was drawing all the time." So important (but difficult) to not let the spark and passion that encouraged you to learn s a skill not die out. Looking forward to more videos from you!
Yes!! I totally agree, so much good advice for one craft can easily apply to another one, and I think that advice of working with what you love is SO so key!
“Welcome! Would you like a crisp pressed seam. They are delicious!” Yeah! I am so excited to see all the good things you have to share with us! And congrats on starting this wild ride!
this made me feel like I was a little kid with a way too ambitious idea and you held my hand and helped me do the whole thing, but it also is the most practical and motivating sewing project tutorial I've watched
Ahh thank you!! I really put so much time into making sure the advice I was giving was actually helpful and the kind of thing I would've wanted to hear earlier when I was starting out!
Mmmm.. my best advice is.. 1. Enjoy the process.. don't hurry too fast just because you want the garment in the end. So I agree with taking the long road is the short road! Remember this piece of clothing will be with you for YEARS.. so. .you can take a bit of extra time right? And 2. Don't dispair when you see other cosplayers/historial dress makers. .that can afford more/better materials then you.. or even worse..machines. Don't kill yourself for not being able to make that huge mega embroidery that others did.. because they most likely (not always) did not either but could afford a REALLY expensive but great machine to do it for them. One day. .that will be you too! You will get that machine one day!
I recently started sewing and am considering dipping my toe into some cosplay pieces, but my ambition is much higher than my current skill! I really appreciated this video and tips, there is a lot of information that is left out of patterns or even beginners' sewing tutorials, especially when you're someone who'd rather screw up a fun hard project than do well on boring easy ones...Thank you for the inspiration, time to run to the fabric store! And oh my goodness I love those pants, the details are gorgeous!!
Yes!! That's exactly how I felt when I started sewing, I didn't *want* to do easy beginner things, I wanted to aim high and know that it might be a mistake but I'd learn a lot even if it was! Thank you for leaving such a nice comment, it really made my day! 🥰
I don't sew but follow an odd amount of people who do because it just such an admirable craft. Really loved this confident, friendly advice! Such great vibes.
Finally have the time to actually watching your videos and it has been a delightful time thus far! Can confirm this video increases sewing speed, my backstitching was 60% (if I've remembered how proportions work correctly) faster than usual while watching. Excellent and kind advice!
OMG! That Pink Diamond to Rose Quartz transformation cosplay was you Lizard? That transformation is amazing and it's lived in my head ever since I saw it 💜
That was indeed me!! And THANK YOU SO MUCH, I know it's been a while but I honestly never get tired of hearing from people how much they enjoy watching that video 😭 i'm just so glad it's made other people happy!
This was so encouraging! Thank you for this ^_^ I'm just jumping back into sewing after almost ten years of not touching a machine, and I am rusty as HECK. I'm nervous, but my excitement at sewing clothes that fit my body type is through the roof!
That's so exciting!! I was really rusty after barely sewing during the pandemic too and it feels so good to be making things again. I hope jumping back in goes great for you!
Thank you so much for this video! I watched a few months ago when I started sewing, and I am returning to refresh now that I have more experience. I really love all your content and appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us in a video.
I'm going to be sewing my first item since the pandemic started tonight and wooobuddy this calmed my nerves so much. Thank you for this awesome video and all your ingishts :3 can't wait for more posts!!
IM SO EXCITED YOU HAVE A RUclips! I’ve been following you on insta for a long while, love your stuff, and WOW this video is awesome! Thank you for these great tips with some awesome nerdy and fun energy. Can’t wait to see what other videos you make!
Eeeee your craft room looks so good, Lizard! I've been in the despair pit for a moment with an outfit I wanted to make and this really cheered me up and reminded me of how fun crafting can be. Thank you and excited to see you around here too!
I really enjoyed watching your first RUclips video. =) It was relaxing and felt like hanging out with a cosplay friend in their sewing room while discussing tips on projects. The pants turned out amazing! I've been sewing cosplay for 15 years and I definitely needed to hear some of these tips. (Especially when it comes to skipping steps.) Thank you for sharing this video! It's clear you took time to make it visually interesting as well as informative but casual, good camera angles, relaxing music and conversational dialogue. Great job! ^-^
Thank you!! It was such a learning process figuring out how to do what I already do sewing, but remembering to actually document everything! Man I'm always tempted to skip steps too even though I know what a bad idea it can be 😆
the well of inspiration that this video provides vs the only sewing machine i have access to currently being broken: fight (i need to service and clean it so bad its literally straight from the thrift store) but belated welcome and thank you for the inspiration and tips!
aah I appreciate your thoughtful advice! it's so nice to hear you share tips that I've started implementing because it helps me to feel like I've been making sage decisions in my sewing!!
YAAAY!! so excited to see your channel starting up! i feel you SO MUCH on community being a huge driver behind creating, but seeing this video really makes me excited to jump back on the bandwagon. alsooooo, you and all the other epic original TLT cosplayers are making me want to do my own version of The Body. i got some halloweeny chains already. 👀
Thank you!! I really hope to do more videos in this style, it's tricky to actually pull off the multitasking in practice but I love the way it turns out in the end!
Lizard!! This video is amazing I love it SO much. Thank you for sharing all these tips. Even as someone who's been cosplaying for years it's good to be reminded of these things. Plus, it's reminded me how good it feels to have fabric in your hands and put something together! The whole video is really inspiring and you've done a fantastic job!! I can't wait to see what videos (and cosplays!) you come up with next 💖

omg lizard youtube! omg ianthe! aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! 😍😍 if you're looking for any more video ideas, i'd love to know how you decide on non-structural details, like the lacing on the sides of these pants. like i'm good on the basics but all my cosplay projects end up being kinda basic and i never know what else to do with them other than adding some trim along the edge. but also i am now inspired to maybe actually work on my obscure CR cosplay this weekend :D
That's a fantastic suggestion for a video!! In this specific case, the lacing details were included in the pattern, but other things like the little studs on the waistband and the front gold stripe were things I added. I'll definitely think about how that could be a video 🤔
Aaaaa yessss!!!! I got so excited as soon as you said lesbian necromancers in space. I loved that book! I can't wait to see your cosplay progress! You're so chill and witty, this video legit felt like hanging out with a friend and chatting while they work on a project. Instant subscribe. Oh I forgot to add, the different camera angles and editing are all AMAZING and this is ridiculously well-produced for your first RUclips video!!! Seriously well done 👍✨

Having them written out somewhere else + maybe lingering on the titles a little longer would make it more accessible imo. Literally loved everything else about this tho
Thank you!! And yes that's a great call, this edit was such a herculanean task to get finished since it was the first thing I edited in FCPX but you're totally right about the titles moving kind of fast! Also yay fellow TLT reader, I"m truly SO obsessed with those books!
ITS TIME FOR US TO TWINS!!! I’m gonna. Coronabeth for holmat/katsu XD These pants turned out lovely and also your advice is good for all levels of crafters. The compassionate google it is tbh the best

i adore this video and also you and also those pants!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSS I am SO excited to digest some of these tips when I start my next big project at the end of October!
I will say, to your interfacing/layering point, I have found some more success with interlining and padstitching/permanent basting than interfacing on some fabrics. Mostly because I HATE the buckling effect that some interfacing gives to widgy, floppy fabrics, whereas adhering a lining layer with some tiny wee stitches can be infinitely controlled and modified until the final effect is nice and smooth. I wish I was as wizardly with an iron as you are to get a smooth adherence with my interfacing!!
I've got some projects in the pipeline for early next year that are going to get me into padstitching and I'm EXCITED about it!! It's such a great technique and I've just never had the chance to use it!
