I've got average to low genetics. I've always finished bottom half in everything to do with fitness. I've got hooked on armwestling since 2019 and train for it - just gotta get to a club. My humble goal is to get a bronze medal in any armwestling tournament. I don't ask for much considering my history in such things but I wanna go for it like its the holy grail or something. Never smashed it in anything. Nows the time 😁
Very well put. I pulled John in 85 at Petaluma, I lost to Jimmy Payne John best Jimmy I had the chance to pull him again in 96 in the springs John won, I've always said he had great genetics pulled his brother bill in 97 in Aurora as soon as we gripped up you can tell they are in the same gene pool, I laughed and said it's like putting your hand up against a softball glove🤣
well… its pretty obvious John has good genetics. This is not exactly news. I thought you were going to tell us the differences in his tendons, bones, muscles and ligaments strength and shape that are the results of his genetics.
I'm burning through the Bob Brown videos, great information and has helped me level up! I've watched so much Bob is starting to trigger MY ticks... Brilliant vids, I loved your arm wars video too!
I believe the same. These days I find people saying, John would not be goat if he was competing in this era, But they fail to understand if era has progressed everyone, same it would have done to John. (let it be more specific training / smarter training / better supplements / PEDs).
Couldn't agree more. :) I would add his intelligence and ability to suss out opponents weaknesses so he could weave his way through a competition without exerting more energy than necessary as being a factor. Sometimes though, if he was superior enough, he would fight his opponent from their position of strength and win from there, which was also good training to get stronger outside his go to comfort zone. I also think one of his strengths was fearlessness. Engin mentioned it. He wasn't afraid of losing and would take on several weight-classes, which would worsen his chance of winning that tournament, but improve his overall ability and therefore his chances to win. It is like investing with money; investing money might cost you, but it can also make you much richer. John kept challenging himself and got 'richer' from it. And he has got back onto that arm-wrestling motorway since returning to the sport.
Fascinating observations. John's work ethic echoes the words of business philosopher Jim Rohn:"Behind every disciplined effort you make, a multiple reward results and grows." If possible, please do a follow up video on the nutritional angle in arm wrestling. What does John eat pre match to derive max power and keep the muscles finely twitched. His arm and wrist strength must be like a hydraulic press, relentless to overcome much taller and stronger men. What are some of his game theory tools as well to adapt during match, wrist position etc? TY for sharing your observations with aw advice and is across the world on youtube.
Similar to playing soccer. I played through college. Genetics obviously help, but nothing beat actually playing. You can't totally replicate just going on the field and playing with that game like intensity, the flow of the game, and the mental and physical connection of it all. All the other technical, physical, and tactical work during practice just molded that rawness into a polished version. But if you just spent a majority of the time practicing and not playing soccer, you're in for a rude awakening. So it makes sense when John says nothing beats table time as the main guts of the training. I can only imagine what he could have been though with today's overall mentality of training for armwrestling. Even greater? Kind of hard to say that though given his career haha.
I think once you know HOW to armwrestle you will make better gains in the gym. It's nearly impossible not to go 100% in practices, and you cant measure your progress. But you cant be an expert diver who never gets in the pool.
Agree totally...if John was born in lets say 1990 and trained with weights and machines with his great genetics in specific movements he'd have been even stronger than he was without doubt...as far as training goes whether it's armwrestling training...power lifting...body building you tear muscle down during training and you recover and get stronger through rest and recovery and keeping your proteins high because without it you're wasting your time... if you can't repair what you tore down you never gain you actually lose.
I agree Bob. Everyone likes to parrot back "John only did table time". Even if largely true, that's an oversimplification and it does NOT mean that's the best method for everyone. It's the best method to become a skilled armwrestler, not necessarily the best way to get strong. If you ONLY train on a table will you get stronger? Of course. But is it optimal? No. The modern generation of armwrestlers, especially in Russia and eastern Europe are proof of this. And before anyone chimes in with "steroids", look, that's nothing new and certainly not limited to Europe. They are just better at getting strong.
@@mrswolls I dont want to say because I really love the dude, but its fairly obvious of who I'm referring to. HGH abuse will enlarge the head, hands, and feet.

But no, I don't think he just walked into a gym and BP'd 400lbs :) and I don't know if this was the time Bob Brown was talking about.
Disagree. Arm wrestling max effort once a week is probably close to optimal. Pretty much all top arm wrestlers take one week to recover from max efforts. Cyplenkov, Hutchings and Brzenk have said the samet thing. So whats the point of adding more training when you’re still recovering? Todd adds all this other weird speed day volume day crap im not sure if it helps.
Hmmmm. I believe you should save your max/max effort for the match . Practice/training should be hard stimulation so recovery and repair is successful. And you can practice your craft more and more. Remember you have adrenaline in matches, so the max is gonna be dangerous. Devon trains this way. Saves his max for the match
Good video. I've seen John doing pull ups etc on documentaries so I'm sure he does formal training as well as table time. As you say he is also just insanely strong genetically. On top of that he's very smart and flexible. I'd say similar to Devon. Finally I think the fact he's an engineer and will understand mechanics and angles of force well helps him be the most efficient he can be.
John was my training partner for over 20 years. The video you saw of him doing pull ups was pretty much just for the documentary. He really does only do table time. John is not an engineer. He’s an airline mechanic. Todd hutchings is an engineer.
@@bobbrownfun - To put that in perspective Larry Wheels just took a year off from benching to arm wrestle and lost over 200lbs off his bench. People keep asking this question but John has literally TOLD US ALL exactly how to do it. Don't go to a gym and just lift weights and think those obscure muscles thatre made for armwrestling are going to get stronger from just doing THAT.
