    Reaction videos are a substitute for when you would hear a new song or band and want to go show your friends. You get the satisfaction of seeing someone else experience something that you also enjoyed experiencing.
    In the digital age, we have less human contact and interaction so it's more rare to be able to share these experiences, so reaction videos are a digital approximation of that human connection that we all crave.

    I was 16/17 back then and I'll always love how rough those recordings were, I was a kid who felt like he could record a really brutal song without too many resources. I also loved how everything sounded so randomize sometimes, it was like "let's take this riff, at this tempo, then this other song riff, blast those drums like your life depends on it, and paste it all together" "yeah and how do we fit it?" "just put some audio from a movie in the middle, and DON'T FORGET THE FUCKING PIGSQUEAL".
    There were no rules or structures yet, just kids trying to sound as brutal as they could, no matter what. And that was what made me love it! Raw home recorded music, not necessarily well played, but it had that "thing" that kept me searching for a new song every single day.
    Love this new wave though! It's fresh, it's brutal, it's amazing.

    We slip through one fact. Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal happened. I think Mick Gordon's ungodly masterpiece sound is a deciding factor here. It really wasn't deathcore, but it was a mix between core and prog with a shit lode of electronics, but it was quality wise above anything that bands done at the time. It's simply gained extreme popularity just by song quality, and paff. Majority of people capable enjoying metal if it's done well. Or if it's high enough quality I should say. And what's similar with those now popular deathcore bands? They both are next level mixed, mastered and crafted. No time before could we enjoy core so high quality. Other than that is Mick's work with heavy electronics, so it was clear that you can freely experiment with classic sounds, let that be more electronics (seriously Brand of Sacrifice's new single Lifeblood basically a Doom song with growls), more orchestral like Lorna Shore, or just be more technical like Slaughter.

      @Wenceslas_Krantz 2 года назад +6

      @@roxycocksey glad that I'm not the one noticing it! Hell, Mick's work inspired Bring Me to make a heavier album while not even close to deathcore, but significantly heavier than their previous albums. Gordon even mixed the songs for that, so yeah. The influence is unquestionable.

    • @juanjoyaborja.3054
      @juanjoyaborja.3054 2 года назад +9

      Doom has really mixed with metal really well, overall. Some of the imagery in the classic doom games was inspired by old iron maiden album covers, and doom E1M1’s note progression is very similar to that of some other songs at that time, particularly no remorse by Metallica. I can absolutely agree that the modern doom games have inspired a lot of deathcore bands, both with the production and some of the electronic sounds themselves. 2016 was a huge year for deathcore overall, and the first doom game in almost 13 years was released as well. Mick Gordon is an absolutely phenomenal and talented musician, there’s simply no denying it. I have come to accept Bethesda kicking him, and like Andrew Hulshult’s work with David Levy, but something about Mick Gordon’s songwriting is just so much more memorable. He’s done a myriad of other works before, but doom in particular is the most metal he has gotten. Also, I’m pretty sure some deathcore vocalists actually attended the doom eternal choir, which is part of the game’s soundtrack. I think that was a major influence too, as even Alex Terrible (guy at the beginning of the video) was aware of it and even tried joining it. Unfortunately, he wasn’t part of the OST.

    • @juanjoyaborja.3054
      @juanjoyaborja.3054 2 года назад +6

If your music appeals to 10% of men but only 1% of women, that's only 5.5% of the population. Even if your genre is less mainstream, appealing to just 5% of men, but it appeals to just as many women, that's still 5% of the population.

      Coming from a fan of the OG stuff, I also disagree. Is kind of like a competition on who is gonna write the most random heaviest breakdown and do the nastiest pig noise nowadays. OG deathcore felt more authentic to the artists. It was fun to listen to. Nowadays for me deathcore has become that type of music where you sit down and just pay attention to the vocals just like prog kids sit down and try to figure the song structure.

Deathcore nowadays is not memorable aside from certain songs or bands that we all know

    • @fullswingin
      @fullswingin 2 года назад +5

      @@mr.keiser4259 As someone who never really got into OG deathcore but love modern stuff, I completely agree lol. Modern deathcore has 100% devolved into "who can write the dumbest breakdown" or "who can make the weirdest noises with their mouth", and the two "breakout" songs Finn cited - To the Hellfire for Lorna and Demolisher for STP - are perfect examples. They only got famous because of their breakdowns, and when you consider that reaction channels and tik toks are the "modern myspace", it does make sense - stuff that makes people squirm gets the most reactions and is easiest to make viral.
      Also to Finn's final point about who will make the next breakout song, I don't think it will ever be Shadow of Intent for that exact reason. They did their indulgent breakdown on Heretic Prevails (which, even in 2017, was a breakout song), but their last two albums don't indulge like that anymore and I think more closely fit what you described as being "more authentic". Deathcore is virtually indistinguishable from technical/progressive death metal or blackened death metal now...I think that's what you mean by 'fully developed.' And I don't have an issue with this, originality is kinda overrated. I'm glad deathcore can take its rightful place among other legitimate subgenres now. I've always considered it 'metal' but most people don't feel that way...or at least they didn't back in the day.

It's hard to tell what's going on. As for Will Ramos, he's such a great vocalist but this video was wrong on the Lorna Shore take as well as him. CJ is just as good, if not then much better as a vocalist than Will Ramos. CJ was one of the most talked about vocalist (before the allegations) because of his gutterals and sick nasty highs. Meanwhile the rest of the band worked their asses of for years and when they drop an amazing album they get nothing to show for it.

    There’s an element of grandiosity and performance again. Adding orchestral, melodic bits, or black metal elements adds more depth to the music itself. Then vocalists trying new things adds that much more. Slaughter To Prevail have a different look and a different presentation - they put on a show. That’s something metal lost for awhile. Spectersoundstudios put it into perspective really well in his band photos video. Deathcore bands used to look AND sound over the top, even if it meant a goofier presentation. Then it just kinda turned into dudes standing in an abandoned building with their arms crossed while sounding largely identical to each other.

      Maybe you have a very narrow view of black metal but I’m talking about bands like emperor who, compositionally speaking, play and write circles around most deathcore bands.

    I actually watch a lot of these reaction channels. I am proud to say you showed clips or I saw thumbnails for almost all of my favorites. Charismatic Voice, Julia Nilon, 2 Rockin' Grannies, Alex Hefner, Too LIT Mafia, Metal BIRB, etc.

    Lorna Shore isn't my thing, but really happy to see Slaughter to Prevail on the way up, they've been great from the start.

    No song has ever made me cry. Until Pain Remains. Brings me to tears almost every time. Maybe people hear the music but some of us feel it.

    Another band that's on the rise from 2020-21 is Left to Suffer, their new EP was a masterclass, and "Anger" is up there for Deathcore tracks of the year.
    Edit; I just rewatched the video, and okay you did mention them. 🤘

    I really feel like the educational reaction format needs some particular praise. Kardavox Academy and The Charismatic Voice both add a lot more content than just doing a reaction with the goal of helping people replicate these vocals without damaging their voice. Which is something I certainly wish was more accessible 20 years ago when I started attempting to do distorted vocals.

      Its the charasmatic folks in the reaction scene that rise to the top, that and being genuine. People with big fake reactions and no insight never grow very quickly. Its sucks though, if you cuss or are a loveable weirdo like GalacticCriminal the numbers come slowly, which is BS

      @@jmarth523 right, and most people don't want to watch a 30-50 minute vocal breakdown, but I think those 2 in particular do a lot for helping newcomers understand a bit more. The fact that they add some teaching points, at least to me, makes them a bit more notable than the other reactions.

      I agree completely, Charismatic Voice does an actual in-depth analysis from the point of view of a vocal coach and opera singer. Showing proper technique that will keep you from destroying your vocal cords and supporting your voice effectively. Not your usual click-baity reaction video.

    I was around back when deathcore was on its way up (I sang in a band called Suffokate), and it’s definitely in the best place it’s been in quite a while. Cool video!

    I'm genuinely surprised bands like Venom Prison or Fuming Mouth haven't gotten as big within the Deathcore scene, especially after how big straightforward Death Metal bands like Sanguisugabogg and Frozen Soul have gotten over the course of the beginning of the decade. I'm sure they have an audience with OG Deathcore fans, but it kinda seems strange seeing Deathcore bands who take more of an OSDM sound not getting as popular as the bands mentioned in the title given the popularity of other bands of the same niche.

    Also, I think Shadow Of Intent isn’t going to have that break out moment, since they are heading down a death metal path and leaving death-core there aren’t those “oh shit” moments.

      Ironic because out of all these new bands, SoI is by far my fave because they broke the mold. The black/death vibes are great, why I got into metal in the first place. All this new stuff is just too cheesy, they all sound the same... Extremely fast double kick, breakdowns and super lower tunings... Just doesnt do it for me unfortunately.
