Hey I'm 43 and I love music that teenagers are into , I have Autism so I'm very much like a 17 year old trapped in a close to middle aged man's body , so I hope you'e not judging older people who like music that younger people are into
I really think the DOOM soundtracks are gonna make a notable new generation. It's introduced SO many people to that style of music and that eventually leads everyone to getting used to the vocals
Same here and let's be honest, all music is marketed towards younger people anyway, so it doesn't really matter what you like as long as you're enjoying it.
Noah from Bad Omens is so fucking good. Saw them open for Ice Nine Kills and was sold the moment he hit the stage. Definitely excited to see more from them in the future.
Same here I only heard like one song and didn't think much of the.. then I saw them open for INK in November and was shook. I've since added more of their songs to my playlist
Noah is one-of-a-kind for me. How often do you see so much talent, taste and versatility in a guy? I adore everything Bad Omens do and pray to see them live eventually
@@mynameislove1704 to each their own bro 🔥 if you haven’t listened to Calcutta I totally recommend it or gods, both by sleep token. I think I appreciate them because they have a melodic, emotional tone which I love in music.
@@LukeDuckHypertrophy Yes bro I also love the melodic side of metalcore but not really a fan. I think Killswitch is the perfect example of that cause they're heavy but at the same time has really catchy and melodic chorus
I remember seeing BVB open for William Control back in 2010. I was the only guy in the crowd lol. Andy tried to jump into the crowd for a minute but the girls completely obliterated his shirt & were literally clawing at his skin. I literally had to grab him & help him back onstage (he's TINY). He was really nice about it later too. They're all super nice humble dudes. Back then they were still a small band too, so it was cool seeing a band like that in a tiny venue before they really hit BIG. I dont like BVB music per say, but they are nice dudes. & the guitarists are no joke. A7x levels of shred.
Once Sharptone came into existence, metalcore really started thriving again. That label is key to this new wave of breakout bands. Was around 2017 or so when that roster really started growing and we got some big releases from Emmure, Loathe, While She Sleeps, Miss May I, Currents, Polaris, WCAR.
Arising Empire are doing great work for the good of Metalcore too. Aviana, LANDMVRKS, Imminence, Novelists, Resolve etc. Lots of good artists out there.
Metalcore is one of those genres that has keeps evolving with the times. They say trends run in 20 year cycles. I truly believe the genre will never really just die. The appeal of metalcore is how versatile of a genre it is, it can reach into alot of different audiences, it's an aggressive style of music combined with catchy melodic choruses and passages. I see people who aren't particularly huge fans of metal with atleast a couple metalcore songs in their gym playlists. Its interesting to see metalcore acts flirting with mainstream. It's overall good for us and the genre.
I think it’s more accurate to say that there are a lot of sub genres within metalcore, which makes it more likely to acquire a wider audience. Some weighing on the melodic side, some on the more hardcore side, some being more metallic. Metalcore is honestly too wide at times, imo, as some of the bands sound NOTHING alike lol
@@metalboy6094 You say that, but it's gone for a lot of changes. It started as Hardcore bands with some Metal elements like Converge, Earth Crisis, and Hatebreed. Then we had late 90's early 2000's bands mixing Hardcore and Melodic Death. Like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, All that Remians...etc We also had bands mixing in post-hardcore like Silverstein, Underoath, and Dance Gavin Dance. Then Easycore like A Day To Remember and Chunk! No,Captain Chunk! About 2007ish Attack! Attack! came alonng and changed it again with Crabcore. About 2010 Djent/Progressive Metalcore started blowing up. Around 2015 the Nu-Metalcore and Buttrockcore started and has taken over scene now.
@@DragonKnightX12 Yes, the pre genres of metalcore evolved a lot, and it was an impressive step from hardcore to metalcore, but after that not much happened with the cores.
It's interesting to see that over the years honestly almost all of the DNA from old extreme metal and hardcore are basically gone in a lot of places. Metalcore is kinda just the word for modern metal that isn't in a traditional genre at this point
@@Johan12359 Their mix compared to Spiritbox (the only band I was there to see) was far, far superior. I know it's not entirely the responsibility of the bands to mix correctly, but there's was darn impressive.
Same holy crap their sound and visual production is phenomenal. Super impressed with them and can't wait until they go on a headline tour for their new album.
@@adamtaylor5274 Yeah I didn't think Spiritbox was very good when I saw them in Silver Spring. Boring vocals and every song was too samey with Courtney just kind of crooning the whole time. Bad Omens and Underoath killed it on the entertainment front.
Bad Omens and Ice Nine Kills give me a lot of hope for the genre as a whole to continue growing. They’ve both found unique sounds in a genre that’s easy to be stagnant and repetitive, and Bad Omens in particular has a poppy enough sound to appeal to fans outside of metalcore or rock. Loved this video, and agreed with pretty much every point you made
I recently met Spencer at Monster Mania. A very down to earth dude. We talked about how it was playing with Metallica. He said Lars walked up to them and said " Hey I'm the drummer for the band" . We both were like no shit!
When I was in high school bad omens sent me a link to their song exit wounds and ever since then I’ve been hooked. Every song and album is so well put together and his vocals are absolutely amazing. Can’t wait to maybe see bad omens live
Spiritbox is the future. They're everywhere, and everything they touch at this point turns to gold. Been listening to them since Mara Effect. I remember when they couldn't even get enough orders to do a vinyl release. Now they're in demand everywhere.
The new foreign hands ep is my favorite release of 2022. Look at bands on labels ‘paper wings records’ ‘wretched records’ and ‘the coming strife records’. Renounced, caludron, writheinfear, life erased; there’s a lot of great 00s metalcore/deathcore on these labels.
Hell yeah that's my shit. This kind of stuff makes it a real metalcore revival for me. I made a huge metallic hardcore revival playlist back in 2018 when I saw Code Orange, Vein, and Twitching Tongues in a big venue and realized how much traction the stuff was getting, couldn't believe it. Got my nose broken at that show so the playlist was called "metallic hardcore + metalcore revival that makes me wanna break my f***** nose" 😂
Dude I saw Bad Omens opening for Ice Nine Kills back in November and they blew me away. The crowd was chanting “One more song!!! One more song!!!” at the end of their set, and they weren’t even the headliner
I've never been the biggest metalcore band, but Spiritbox really hit me recently. Went to their show in support of Underoath which was a lot of fun, but Spiritbox specifically were soo good plus surprise, Will Ramos came out and sang Holy Roller with them! What a night. I also thought Bad Omens were pretty good
You definitely need to listen to the new Bad Omens record in its entirety. You mentioned wanting them to have a more pop sound, and trust me, they delivered!
Album has been on repeat non stop for me. At first I was a bit hesitant to check it out after hearing about how different it was but my goodness, that album is a 10/10 for me and probably my favorite release of the year so far. Seeing them this weekend with UØ and Spiritbox and cannot wait 🔥
I am so glad Bad Omens filled in the slot left by ETID for the Underoath tour because I hadn't really paid attention to them before. They were phenomenal live and their new album has been on repeat for me for the last couple of weeks.
I agree about the reaction videos. That Jinjer video for "Pisces" has so many reaction videos with everyone freaking out when Tatiana goes from clean to growls. Have to think that exposure brought in new fans.
I like Jinjer myself but I don't like most reaction videos/genre as a whole because to me it just get boring when people keep reaction to the same videos over and over again with the same reaction or with similar reactions
Alot of older bands are coming back too. Of Mice and Men, Devil Wears Prada, Memphis May Fire. All of those went into rock and other genres and are putting out heavy stuff again in 2022.
Memphis may fire is dead in the water lmao. They haven't changed at ALL in their entire tenure. It's the same 30-40 year old dudes writing really cringy whining and self loathing about how hard it is to be Matty Mullins or how he'll never sell out for fame that they're not good enough to garner naturally anyways lol. What they released recently is the same cheesy 2010 metalcore from back in the day.
@@nuancedhistory Maybe not all the way, but they definitely did. The Act and Transit Blues were way softer and more artsy sounding. The sound felt as close to rock as it did to metalcore for lots of it.
Memphis May Fire is more consistent actually, they're in their own type of metalcore and rock which make them sound more unique and part of the revival 🔥🔥
Ice Nine Kills is the best addition you’ve added to my music collection. Honestly thought they were a Rap artist until I watched your video on them. Thanks Fin!!!
It's an exciting time for metalcore for sure. It's kinda crazy that it's become so diverse that Electric Callboy and Knocked Loose are both technically part of the same genre.
Yeah, it’s really confusing. I’ve not usually one to advocate for more subgenres, but I think we’ve moved so far past the original metalcore formula at this point that it is warranted.
Been a fan of Bring Me the Horizon since 2015 with that’s the Spirit, Ice nine Kills with their album “ The Silver Scream, and Spirit Box blew me away with Eternal Blue. It’s so awesome to see these bands kicking ass.
Watching this video a year later. Love that you listed both Bad Omens and Sleep Token before they had their moment that took them to the next level. There is but one gospel of metalcore and Finn is its prophet.
Ice Nine Kills has been my new favorite band, I discovered them when The Silver Scream came out. I saw an ad on Facebook for their song “Thank God It’s Friday” and have been hooked ever since. So I totally agree that the whole music video thing is important because that’s how I got pulled in.
Illenium just showed a preview of a song he’s doing with Spiritbox. I think that says a lot considering he’s probably the most popular melodic EDM artist out there
Another sign of metalcore’s return is when it can cross over. The Japanese anime “Attack on Titan’s” most recent season had a metalcore song for the opening. That song, by a band called SIM, “The Rumbling” made it to the top 10 on the US rock charts and it’s gotten tens of millions of views on multiple videos/versions (the first one posted had 45m views and other variations of the video [full length, music vid] are ~10m each)
Altough attack on titan isn’t the first anime to feature a metalcore song. It has taken off and everyone I know that watches this anime is head banging to that intro. ❤️
@@PrettyDeadNightmare for sure. But no other anime opening has ever topped the rock chart or gotten over 50m views. That’s just insane. Honestly something I never thought Id see. He was talking about Falling in Reverse succeeding with 10m views on their most recent vid and SIM got multiple times that I’m 36. Got into anime during its first major push in the late 90s. Used to be so niche back then. Now you see anime stuff in Walmart and Dollar Stores, the front page of Netflix, and cons get 50k plus attending (even in Nov 2021, during the co-19 delta/omicron fear). My 15yr old daughter is into it now, and her experience as a fan is the polar opposite from when I was in high school
Bands like Spiritbox and Ice Nine Kills push the envelope of what we come to expect with Metalcore - in the same fashion as Gojira with death metal, or maybe more appropriately in death metal Fit For An Autopsy's "What The Future Holds". Spiritbox's Eternal Blue has a range that is both rare and welcomed. Hearing Holy Roller, and then the very next song I heard from them being Constance, I was immediately hooked. But it was Ice Nine that really surprised me. They get a lot of heat in the metal community, similar to BMTH but in an underserved way, in my humble opinion. The Sliver Scream 2 is like a rock-opera. Being both a metal and horror fan, they managed to blend those elements and NOT have cheesy songs. In fact the opposite, SS2 is amazingly catchy. I'm very excited to see what both these bands do with their next records and hope I get to see them live in the near future :)
@@newacc6065 I think there's a fairness in that claim, if all we do is compare the album to their own previous body of work. Outside of INK - I haven't heard anyone do what they do and get good songs out of it. SS2 has the catchy sounds of Panic! and MCR, but the heavy of metalcore so for me it's a win. It's the alternative to the alternative :)
Metalcore is always showing a new side.. I've been a metalhead for 12 years, and it's one of the reasons I got into metal... Old and Veil of Maya transitioning from Deathcore to Metalcore I love Deathcore and Metalcore.. Ice Nine Kills August Burns Red Periphery Loathe Asking Alexandria Born Of Osiris Veil of Maya Ocean Grove Etc...
If we’re talking melodic type metal like As I Lay Dying then metal core won’t die. It has cleans for people that hate metal. It just has a lil something for everyone.
Ehh, i wouldn't call As I Lay Dying a "genre comeback". Now or ever. The whole Tim controversy won't let it happen. Hell, it's a miracle the band itself managed to have a comeback WITH Tim. That's more than they could ever ask for..
@@vinnregi4882 Oh sorry but yeah I think As I Lay Dying comeback is one of the best metal comeback of history, love their latest album tho regardless what Tim did
Personally, shouting over the same At the Games/early In Flames riff stil doesn't do it for me. But I get that there is a huge potential for nostalgia because that music was pretty much dead for a decade.
I think the reaction channels have been a huge influence. I don't know how many videos I've seen reacting to Pisces by Jinjer, but I never get tired of seeing people have their jaws hit the floor when that first chorus kicks in 😁
Thank you Finn for this great video. Spiritbox and Bad Omens are my favourite metalcore bands right now. BTW, I'm waiting for the first grassy field in a coloured room video. :)
I've been listening to INK for a while after seeing them at warped tour like 10 years ago or more and I feel like they've only kept stepping up their game every album and always put on such a great show even before they "made it big" i'm so glad to see them growing and how much support they've been getting🤟
They should be so much bigger than they currently are. They definitely had a bit of a breakout with a bunch of singles from P2, but it seems like they’ve been steadily losing popularity with every year, despite them having a near-perfect formula. Sucks to see it; love those guys.
@@djentrification1631 Idk if they're losing popularity so much as they just have a really defined lane/fanbase... If you look at any of those dudes social media you can see they're doing really well
I remember trying to get all of my friends in middle school to listen to The Drug in Me is You like it was yesterday and now Falling in Reverse is getting feature slots at these huge festivals and selling out tours. Great to see an artist you’ve loved for years get some recognition from the mainstream
all those bands are killing it...just saw a couple on the LMTF tour a couple weeks back. hard to include all the various names in these videos I'm sure...lots to summarize
For some reason, Finn tends to really underrate Polaris. The few times they've been mentioned on this show, he dismisses them as Architects clones. Really bad take IMO, but Finn says himself that he doesn't really like that style of metalcore so I'm not surprised he doesn't have good takes on it.
Seeing Eskimo Callboy in 2013 or so as an opener to Callejon (which no one really talks about anymore, especially out of Germany), jumping over the stage in crappy animal costumes before the rooftop of the venue came down, didn't expect them to be the (second) biggest German Metalcore Band 10 years later
Callejon. Holy shit, i remember a German friend of mine recommending me to check them out, but even from the name i was turned off. (i did check out WBTBWB though and thought they were fun xD She hated them).
Saw Vein last week and I just have to say that you absolutely have to see them live. Their set is so good, no bullshit talking or theatrics, just 30-35 minutes of non-stop 50 second songs filled with brutality.
All the freshman and sophmore albums of the 2000s are the only metalcore i ever need. As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, Haste The Day, Classic Struggle, As Blood Runs Black, From A Second Story Window, The Haunted, If Hope Dies, Becoming The Archetype, Luti-Kriss/Norma Jean, A Perfect Murder, See You Next Tuesday, Winter Solstice, On Broken Wings, Anapparatus, It Dies Today, At All Cost... etc. etc.
I’m 31 now and I wish some how tomorrow we could wake up and have the early mid 2000s metalcore scene back those were the days. So many good bands and life was good
Ugh yeah I’m turning 32 and I agree with you. Underoath’s 2010 Disambiguation marked the end of that era for me. I think around 2011 or so, I started listening to what my new friends in college listened to. When I rediscovered a lot of the music I grew up listening to in my late twenties and now early thirties, I realize my love for that music never changed.
@@kyllllllllle same I’ll be 32 in may and I went off the rails with kottonmouth kings and other rappers when I got into college and after getting back into life post rehab found all this new stuff that doesn’t really hold a candle to the old school metalcore
I feel totally aged here! I’m of the original MySpace generation (an ancient millennial) and my love for the genre goes back to the early ‘00s “At the Gates-core”. Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall (any metalhead in their 30s from Massachusetts knows that the metalcore scene in the early ‘00s was MASSIVE). I’m now in love with INK and Spiritbox and am thrilled the genre is coming back to life - even if just a little bit. You made some of us feel old (and yet somehow appreciated), McKenty! So… thank you? Maybe?
With spiritbox I feel it's kinda hard to say they got big faster than everyone else, in only 3 years. Iwrestledabearonce, the band that Courtney and Mike got their foundation with in the scene has been around since 2007 so they are around 15 years now with just a name change. Also I learned about them through Andrew Baena so I'm curious how much he helped them blow up
Iwabo meant Coutney was fairly well known indeed. IWABO members had not given Courtney any creative freedom at all and forced her into their old musical formula. Spiritbox is a whole other band to IWABO.
Yeess the Bad Omens shout. I've become a true streaming listener (not an album guy anymore), but I listen to the Death of Peace of Mind from cover to cover often. So many great songs.
I’m on the younger side, 16, and it definitely feels that way sometimes as a fan of this type of music, whether it’s being the only kid at live shows or something like that. I got into metalcore after discovering a bunch of post-hardcore and just naturally progressed. I would definitely like to see a larger influx of younger people for this and other similar genres. Edit: also quick note about Spiritbox, yes they blew up relatively quickly but Courtney had been in I Wrestled A Bear Once since 2013, so she has already been on the scene for almost ten years, giving her time to grow an audience and following
Same here i'm 14 and it kinda feels bad being the only one into this stuff . I know a lot of others around my age who are into metal but they're either still listening to gateway bands like slipknot or they're the edgelords who gatekeep and listen to shitty copy paste slam and grindcore bands .and even the ones a few years older than me who listen to this stuff listen to the worse mainstream ones like spiritbox , bad omens and Ink which are all extremely overrated imo
This is crazy for me to read. When I was 14-17, there were almost exclusively teenagers at metal core shows and the old metalheads wearing slayer and motorhead patches were complaining about it. I'm curious to see if metalcore can appeal to the kids again. Back in the day metalcore sounded and looked closer to poppunk and emo, which are both super revelant again. If metalcore were to blend with that again there could be an opportunity there
@@NIIVES I'm with you, I grow listening to metalcore since 2011, and and happy to see how dynamic is this genre to date, and is getting more mainstream everyday, I love that, and I can't wait to see more people wearing t-shirts of metalcore bands, it's just fascinanting 🙏😁
i love that a lot of metalcore seem to be going even harder into the synth/electronic productions to accompany their sound. The Plot In You / Landon Tewers are killing it
Bad Omens was excellent live. You'd probably like their most recent album if you're wanting a more pop sound from them. Their previous two albums were very much BMTH sounding. Their most recent album toys around with more flavors of rock than strictly metalcore like nu metal and industrial, and like 5 tracks on the record straight up feel like The Weeknd songs.
As a 20 year old almost 21 I found my loving of MetalCore in high school. And the first band I listened to was I Prevail then I found a liking in Bring Me The Horizon. Then found Fit For A King which a underrated band that doesn’t get talked about a lot. But those three bands change my view and led me into where I’m at today and going to more MetalCore Concerts. Crowd surfing and mosh pitting so as someone who is young this music is the shit and the best music out there.
Ice Nine Kills' EP "The Burning" is still my favorite project of theirs, but I can definitely appreciate what they're doing for the metalcore scene these days.
Loving the breath of fresh air that is Eskimo Callboy. The Architects have hit the bullseye with Animals (The orchestra version is so damn good). The Amity Affliction "Like Love" is deep and dark and a must to check out.
I have found that metal core is really starting to blossom internationally as well. It’s great that you mentioned Eskimo Callboy but that upcoming band out of India bloody wood is also killing it too.
I got into alot of this stuff as an older metal fan in 2004 with my first year hitting warped and just a few days ago I took my daughter to see ice nine kills on the trinity of terror tour and enjoyed it as much as she did. I don't think it's so much aging out its just getting bored, you have to stay excited and I find reasons to do so
Eskimo Callboy just changed their name to electric callboy just FYI. Here in the U.K. I feel like all alt music is on the up, there’s so much great stuff going around at the moment it feels like when I was a teen again. But that could just be that I’m looking for it again
Wasn't even aware of a metalcore comeback. But coincidentally started to get into it recently. I listened to a lot of hardcore punk in the late 90s and got nostalgic for that sound.
It's wild how Ice Nine Kills got so popular in recent years, I remember opening for them way back in the day (around their 2nd album), small venue and everything, thought nothing of it.
It’s hard to really call all of this stuff “metalcore” because it all sounds so different. Metalcore basically is a label for the majority of modern contemporary metal sound. Also the new deathcore boom definitely goes hand in hand with this.
This exactly! The metalcore label casts too wide of a net imo. That kind of happened with punk too. All the waves are so different from each other. But with metalcore it’s worse, since metalcore is already meant to be a sub genre of metal and hardcore. I’m not a label snob by any means but I feel like metalcore could use some clearer sub genres lol
Idk I suspect that the heavier bands will just start calling themselves Hardcore, “Metallic Hardcore”, or something like that to set themselves apart, and the more melodic bands will ultimately keep the “Metalcore” tag long term.
Or people don't know what metalcore is anymore? Just think about it, I mean the genre is bigger than before but like many genres in rock and metal, they have their own core elements. It's like calling Asking Alexandria a metalcore band in 2022 when they are making butt rock or Bring Me The Horizon when they are making alt rock/pop punk music.
i’m so glad u mentioned bad omens!!! also their new album does have some pop stuff so you might enjoy that. And dying wish omg!! i haven’t seen anyone talk about them since they toured with miw!
One of the last shows I saw before the pandemic was Sanction, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Vamachara, Typecaste, and Dying Wish. A little bit before that I saw Knocked Loose with Stick to Your Guns, Rotting Out, Candy, and SeeYouSpaceCowboy. And then like 6 months before that I saw KL with Harm's Way and Sanction as well as seeing SYSC open for Old Wounds with Chamber (original vocalist). They might all be too big separately to tour together now unless it's on a fatty package.
Another younger band that I could see getting big is Tetrarch. They are relatively young. The hooks are great in my opinion. They are still heavy but have catchy choruses too. I would be interested in seeing if you think they could help lead this revival.
I'd say they're more nu-metal revival than metalcore. But them and Bloodywood are doing something interesting in that style that makes it feel fresh and vital again beyond just the 20 year nostalgia circuit.
@@princealigorna7468 I can definitely hear the nu metal sound. I feel the reason it sounds so fresh is because the main nu metal sound blends with the smaller metal core influences. I think you can put them in either both, i think it depends on what song you listen to.
Dam im hitting this age when Metalcore has experienced so many changed styles and demographic that u can consider Metalcore revival as few iterations of which flavour do you want to revive, so new kids who just started listening to Metalcore will think "This is Metalcore, that one is Metalcore, and the other is Metalcore aw im confused... . "
@@MrMann-gt1ehI was an old TDWP fan but i love AILD aw. But you can imagine when u give examples of Metalcore bands to newbies: Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, to Asking Alexandria and Architects. It's all different, but it's Metalcore. They will start shaking their head in confusion, hhe... .
@S Hwang see? 😂 Even Death Metal has quite diverse subgenres like Brutal, Technical, Slam, etc. But Metalcore, they alw call them Metalcore, and Melodic Metalcore apparently.
Always love seeing INK here- I feel like of all the metalcore bands active right now, they really do keep chopping and changing and setting a stellar precedent
13:09 I found Bad Omens right after they released their first album, and they were my favorite band for a while, but each album they release is getting farther from my taste in music. I'm not gunna say they should go back to what they were before, but I wish I could find more bands like what they used to be. I saw them live at rockfest last year, and this year the only great band there will be spiritbox.
I hope they don't go full BMTH because Noah is a better vocalist than Oliver. His screams and cleans are well executed. Bad Omens recent stuff delivers. They know how to make good heavy and soft music.
10:00 to quote bad omens "Can't say I'm mad This is entertainment But I want what they have and I'm gonna take it And I'm so sorry if I'm cynical, my water's full of chemicals" They understand the state of music and entertainment, probably why they're blowing up🔥
I saw Bad Omens on their most recent tour with Underoath and Spiritbox. I had listened to them a little bit before but was blown away with the performance. I would agree, I think the singer is the next big thing and will take them to that level. Also, their new record showcases a different side of Bad Omens.
I would love to see Metalcore find a way to keep its integrity and connect with kids again. I think we need more catchy break down hooks that can be utilized in tiktok videos or something with extreme dynamics for it to really hit home with kids.
The fans need to be kinder to this new generation than they were to scene kids as well. If they’re unable to do both, then it will be tough for the genre to truly make a comeback.
I think a thing that's missing at the moment is the positivity that used to to be in hardcore and metalcore is being overtaken by nihilism. In the early 2010's the positive messages from bands like In Hearts Wake and The Ghost Inside are what attracted myself and heaps of other kids to the genre.
Ok seriously, that video of TDWP at cornerstone festival is the reason why I decided to play music!! Brings me back so much. This is why I love Finn. Literally making me feel like a part of something
I really feel like there's a stigma in the metal community that will sadly keep the genres feet on the ground. *A lot of metal fans want to gatekeep the genre and keep it "underground"* At LTL in 2021 I went into it with a big head not wanting to accept the lesser metal bands. I eventually got drunk and noticed everyone around me was having a good time. Listened to so many bands that I knew music to and just had a great time and dropped the stigma (myself). The BMTH/Ed Sheeran collab is absolutely awesome. It's not that it's selling out, more like selling up to get a bigger audience.
The sellout + underground thing in metal community has been around forever. Metallica is the prime example of being called "sell out" back in the day & now they're the most successful metal band.
@@gx1tar1er yeah, I don't expect it to go away. I personally love seeing bands flourish. Sometimes I don't like the new music but it's cool to get more fans and popularity in the community. Like it really changes people's lives when they start getting drawn in
In our local scene (Chicago), metalcore has consistently stuck around. Most of the bands do the more Architects-core or djent-core things, but there is a little emergence of more At The Gates-core bands coming around to. We're one, leaning more into the melodeath side of things, but also taking heavy inspiration from bands like Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Darkest Hour, and Shadows Fall. Station 6 was another, though I think they broke up. A Ghost For All Seasons is another band, from Reno, we recently found is keeping that At The Gates-core sound alive too. We're ready for the metalcore revival.
I don't know when you've recorded this video, but Eskimo Callboy already changed their name and made if official and are now "Electric Callboy". I'm not really into metalcore (I like some songs and bands and always depends on the mood), more into metalcorecore lol :D
It never left! My favorite metal genre next to alternative. Currently work on my scream as of typing this. opinion about my first MxC album: it's ok to be wrong, but it's better to acknowledge The Black was Asking's best album
Tallah is the only new upcoming band I think that are pushing the envelope with their Nu core sound. They take obvious inspiration from bands of past but sound fresh and unlike any other band today. On top of that they have a legend in the making drummer Max Portnoy son of Mike Portnoy. Justin Bonitz is an electric frontman too. Sound amazing live.
@@MySkilletfan Idk a lot of people in the world, probably even most of them, listen to pop music and they don't think it's goofy. Eskimo Callboy though... Definitely goofy lol. Not knocking it, but I gotta agree with Finn on this one.
Zombified is playing on my local butt rock radio station. And die4u by bmth. Finally metalcore is getting the recognition they deserve. But I wish they would play the old stuff sometimes, just to show the difference and how far they have come
I am just happy that August Burns Red is STILL going super strong and haven't changed into singing high-pitched males. I fell in love with them in 2008 and haven't let an album go unpurchased since. The fact that you raise the point that people find music through video, like RUclips and such is spot on. Hell I will say I a credit you personally for showing me new bangers to listen to. Also you have brought me back to my favorite times in my life by talking about bands I grew up with and influenced my musical taste. And I like how you have an objective view in your presentation. you aren't just regurgitating what the masses appeal to. and I value that tremendously. Your opinion matters, your subject matter matters, at least to me. I enjoy your channels alot and although I don't agree with everything, which is good. I do agree with alot of what you bring to the table. Don't stop doing what you do. I among others appreciate it!

Great label!
Sharptone and Out of Line are my go-to labels nowadays.

It doesn‘t evolve that much…
I think it’s more accurate to say that there are a lot of sub genres within metalcore, which makes it more likely to acquire a wider audience.
Like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, All that Remians...etc
We also had bands mixing in post-hardcore like Silverstein, Underoath, and Dance Gavin Dance.

Bad Omens and Ice Nine Kills give me a lot of hope for the genre as a whole to continue growing. I love the fact that the old 2000s Metalcore is coming back around (Shai Hulud, PTW, Mis Sigs) such as bands like Foreign Hands and Inclination

That’s my favorite project by them.
Loving the breath of fresh air that is Eskimo Callboy. The Architects have hit the bullseye with Animals (The orchestra version is so damn good). The Amity Affliction "Like Love" is deep and dark and a must to check out.
Spiritbox is such a great band, love them so much! 🔥
I have found that metal core is really starting to blossom internationally as well. It’s great that you mentioned Eskimo Callboy but that upcoming band out of India bloody wood is also killing it too.
Foreign Hands! great band. Also, last year was great for screamo too.
I got into alot of this stuff as an older metal fan in 2004 with my first year hitting warped and just a few days ago I took my daughter to see ice nine kills on the trinity of terror tour and enjoyed it as much as she did. I don't think it's so much aging out its just getting bored, you have to stay excited and I find reasons to do so
I love horror
I love metal
I love INK
I'm a simple human. 😌
I love that INK just played into the Horror image, instead of immediately changing again once something started to work for them.
Just like metalcore itself.... The fans have evolved and enjoy different things
No i havent lol
@@RahzZalinto "some" fans.... Lmao
I can vibe with some things but metal core is my default
@@ejnova7215 exactly. Couldn't agree more. I like all music but my base setting is metal.
It's wild how Ice Nine Kills got so popular in recent years, I remember opening for them way back in the day (around their 2nd album), small venue and everything, thought nothing of it.
I have been loving Australian metalcore lately, lots of great bands! The Amity Affliction, Ocean Sleeper, In Hearts Wake to name a few
Check out Polaris, they're pretty nifty!
It took me two hours to watch this because I kept flipping back to Spotify to listen to these bands. What a ride!
It's the same with Heavy Metal. When a genre grows too wide it starts splitting into sub genres, but metalcore is super well named, which is a shame.
I should be sleeping but Finn sure knows how to keep me awake
Bad omens puts on the BEST live show I’ve ever seen. They sound exactly like the record and that was at the end of the tour. They’re incredible.
Seeyouspacecowboy is where its at. Need a tour with them and Knocked Loose and Dying Wish
Loved this as always Finn, just want to say thank you for all your hard work and for keeping your finger on the pulse with all this new music!
Another younger band that I could see getting big is Tetrarch. They are relatively young. The hooks are great in my opinion. They are still heavy but have catchy choruses too. I would be interested in seeing if you think they could help lead this revival.
whenever i am at a show with tetrarch i always do my best to get a pit going, they really smack.
They smack live too. Caught them 2 weeks ago opening for 7dust
I'd say they're more nu-metal revival than metalcore. But them and Bloodywood are doing something interesting in that style that makes it feel fresh and vital again beyond just the 20 year nostalgia circuit.
@@princealigorna7468 I agree, I feel like tallah also has that sort of sound
@@princealigorna7468 I can definitely hear the nu metal sound. I feel the reason it sounds so fresh is because the main nu metal sound blends with the smaller metal core influences. I think you can put them in either both, i think it depends on what song you listen to.
Your example of At The Gates- core was so spot on, those instrumentals/vocals could've been pulled straight from Slaughter of the Soul.
Dam im hitting this age when Metalcore has experienced so many changed styles and demographic that u can consider Metalcore revival as few iterations of which flavour do you want to revive, so new kids who just started listening to Metalcore will think "This is Metalcore, that one is Metalcore, and the other is Metalcore aw im confused... . "
I prefer melodic metal with intermittent cleans to be Metalcore. To me, the quintessential Metalcore band is As I Lay Dying.
They will start shaking their head in confusion, hhe... .
@@satesup4353 question is: old Architects or new Architects?
@S Hwang see? 😂 Even Death Metal has quite diverse subgenres like Brutal, Technical, Slam, etc. But Metalcore, they alw call them Metalcore, and Melodic Metalcore apparently.
@@feroxk.9266 One is a staple and one becomes trendy... . 😂
I'm 34 and grew up on metalcore in the early 2000s and late 90s. I love itttttt. Misery Signals and zao still my top 2.
I'd like to see you do a breakdown of Bad Omens' new album.
10:00 to quote bad omens "Can't say I'm mad
This is entertainment
But I want what they have and I'm gonna take it
And I'm so sorry if I'm cynical, my water's full of chemicals"
They understand the state of music and entertainment, probably why they're blowing up🔥
I saw Bad Omens on their most recent tour with Underoath and Spiritbox.
@@luke_cohen1 amen to that
I think a thing that's missing at the moment is the positivity that used to to be in hardcore and metalcore is being overtaken by nihilism.
*A lot of metal fans want to gatekeep the genre and keep it "underground"*
At LTL in 2021 I went into it with a big head not wanting to accept the lesser metal bands.
Le Ghey
I don't know if you watched the video but he mentioned it in the video and in the description
What? Why?
Were the Iniut people offended by the mullets?
It never left! My favorite metal genre next to alternative. Currently work on my scream as of typing this.
opinion about my first MxC album: it's ok to be wrong, but it's better to acknowledge The Black was Asking's best album
Tallah is the only new upcoming band I think that are pushing the envelope with their Nu core sound. They take obvious inspiration from bands of past but sound fresh and unlike any other band today. On top of that they have a legend in the making drummer Max Portnoy son of Mike Portnoy. Justin Bonitz is an electric frontman too. Sound amazing live.
I’m 43, still listen to Metalcore. August Burns Red is still one of my favorites
I find it hard to believe Eskimo Callboy is too goofy for you, your favorite genre is pop.
Pop usually isn't nearly that goofy tbh
@@notstarboard oh look the contrairian is here
@@MySkilletfan Idk a lot of people in the world, probably even most of them, listen to pop music and they don't think it's goofy. Eskimo Callboy though... Definitely goofy lol. Not knocking it, but I gotta agree with Finn on this one.
They’re called Electric Callboy now smfh
The Metal inside of us is still there. Especially for the late 90's to 2000s kids/teenage.. Lets support each metal bands together to revive again.
Also, the Greatest Story Ever Told is indeed the greatest. I LOVE that album from INK. I liked iwrestledabearonce. It's good to see her doing something new.
I love bad omen!!! I've noticed them gaining traction lately. Also, a lot of new music I listen to is because of this channel. But I'm not finding a lot of new rock bands because of Finn it's actually pop and hip hop.
Maybe you can enjoy Memphis May Fire, they are part of metalcore's revival since last year with Blood And Water, but their last single Make Believe has a lot Rock Vibes than you can enjoy, it's an amazing song, and a fire band 🔥
Fun fact: When I was 16 I had a 'record label' called Silenced Records that "signed" Ice Nine Kills (they were just Ice Nine back then.) Sure wish I had them sign something, right?? Glad to see their success. I wonder if they remember us?? My band was Get a Job
I've been waiting for you to talk about Bad Omens. Noah is AMAZING and if you listen to their new album, you'll get plenty of those pop vocals you're looking for. They've easily become my new favorite band and I hope they get the recognition they deserve
