Really enjoyed your review. I just finished the book and am so curious what other people thought of it. I definitely agree this is very Franzen-esque in all the best ways.
It was so hard to talk about the end without giving too much away. I was referencing the last sentence. (If you haven't read the book, don't read further). The last sentence reframed it to show that the story was being told from the perspective of a gossipy person in the town who didn't like the family. It was super subtle but clever and funny. That was my take on it, but I'd to hear your your thoughts! Thank you for watching! :)
Ok I agree with that.. there is actually some amazing correlations with Secret Garden musical .. spoiler alert : there was actually a secret buried in the garden!!! Also so much GATSBY!! lighthouse, American Dream out of reach. Also American Pastoral - factory, daughter gone wayward, Franzen structure but the content and themes come from the above sources IMO
