Fantasy Realms is genuinely one of my favorite games. I just don't get tired of trying to get the perfect hand.

I love Fantasy Realms. I was excited for the Deluxe version even though I had the original base + expansion. Ultimately, I decided I didn't like the feel of the sleeves and didn't like the new art quite as much as the old art. I did, however, like the new scoring pad and the new box size as it fits everything sleeved better than the OG box. So, I Frankensteined a perfect combo and gave away the rest. 😁

"mental gymnastics" My new favorite phrase! I've been trying to articulate what I don't like about some games, now I can! Great review! Don't have the expansion, but glad to hear you enjoy the game. Thanks!

I like this game a lot. I know the composition of the entire deck, and there is some probability, but things like Genie and many of the cursed items alleviate that. I can take -40 in effects and still break 300 points on a lot of strategies and generally love the expansion, where I'd say 85% of the items are worth using.
The variability to keep coming back in games that give you an opening hand and ask you to maximize it from mostly unique cards is an attribute among many of my favorite games, Race for the Galaxy included.

I cant find where you compare the original to the deluxe version and what the differences are....Did i miss something?? Good review!

The scoring is the most difficult part of the game, there used to be an app that made it super easy to score.

I've had this in my cart many times because so many people say it's really good. However, you are the first person to describe the game in such a way that I could envision myself playing it and know what I would like about it. Now I will have to get it - it sounds like something we would really enjoy!

I played Fantasy Realms for the first time last night and was really surprised how much I enjoyed a filler. So much replayability!

It's one of those light games that somehow manages to be more fun than it should be

    1. Application / website necessary to calculate scoring! Makes life easier. 🤓
    2. Maybe not the best game in the world, but we have the most games played in it. Mobile - in DragonShield sleeves + string bag only. Plane, forest, waiting room, pub, train, own bed, plays well everywhere. For two people, the regular and empty-hand variant.
    3. Cursed items - so true - unnecessary.

I got it a few weeks ago, and that is a really fun game. My kids got it very quickly, and we had fun playing it. The teach is a breeze, overall a very good filler game.

5:30 And even then, you could argue that that is still math - probabilities - if you know the composition of the deck, you can calculate implied odds...

3:25 Although the game sounds interesting, I am already skeptical that it is going to work for me, based on the fact that Red Rising was one of my biggest gaming disappointments (as in - from the disparity between how much I thought I would like it versus how much it didn't work for me), based mainly on: (1) how overly tactical the game was; and (2) having to make decisions based on a million cards - and especially not having a great way of directly knowing each card's ability, as well as how each card combos together; and (2.5) Not being easily able to see which cards are in which piles - as to be able to make a decision on which pile to discard your card to - and which to take another card from.
In your opinion, would Fantasy Realms be different enough from Red Rising, in order to ease my reservations about it - in comparison to Red Rising?
I would love to try it, but I don't know if it handles my concerns sufficiently.
    Thank you!

I have not played red rising, but putting fantasy realms on the table is …. Shuffling a deck… and go! you have only one deck. As for the interactions between the card, I find the text in the card quite well done. If you are not sure, try the app version, if you prefer the board game version, you can still use the app as a scoring app ( not that the scoring maths is nobel prize level… but using the app for scoring get you go on the next game faster)

Yes. Fantasy Realms feels like a streamlined and non-clunky Red Rising. You can know the cards quicker, get to them easier, see everything in the discard area (no lanes or blocking text). It's much faster except end scoring. Even though i don't hate it hate it (Red Rising), it's much better than Red Rising. And completely portable.
