Looks like it's from the 2250s to early 2260s era (spikes on ramscoops, multi Impulse exhaust thrusters, Warp Nacelle aft grating, black lines on the port and starboard of the Saucer). Most excellent video! It was a pleasure to see the early TOS Federation class Dreadnought!
The original deflectors are integrated with the sensor array - each dish generates an outward graviton beam to deflect smaller debris from the ship's flight path, and uses those same gravitons to detect objects from extremely long distances. The shuttlebay being underneath the saucer allows the ship to cover the shuttles with the phaser array on launch or approach.
Also the 2 smaller dishes are tied into science labs in the saucer section. The DN class also carried 6 fighters, 4 admin shuttles, and a heavy transport shuttle. The 4 admin shuttle can be used as unmanned swac if needed, to draw off un needed plasma torps.
7:33 According to the Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph, the big dish on the front is the main sensor (and the big dish at the rear is a rear-facing counterpart), the smaller port dish is the main deflector, and the smaller starboard dish is the tractor beam.
Cool looking TOS era ship. The three warp nacelles work together to give it increased speed and maneuverability. Legend has it that when saucer separation happens, the saucer still has warp capability with that single warp nacelle
Note, the Federation Class does have a cool party trick. It was designed with trinary shields aka a triple shield grid. When one level fails the other is still at 100%. It also comes with outside holo emitters which allows it to project images of other ships. Would be cool if those features were added to the BC version.
federation class is a beast. they already got ablative armor long before the defiant class and 2x connie firepower and can hold warp 10 (tos scale)( for like 10 hours... the connie can only hold warp 9 for like 15 minutes...
According to the old ship specs for all of the Star Fleets Dreadnought ships (pre TNG Dreadnought/ Galaxy X), all are under powered compared to the Klingon and Romulan counter parts. The the tech books @ the time the ships had power management issues. the Main deflector it the large one the 2 small ones next to it are for comms., as well as the one on the aft of the secondary hull. The Dreadnoughts were command and control ships. Normally with a Commodore or Admiral commanding the ship and fleet.
Well, first time I ever saw a federation class used on BC. Love how you won the rematch Admiral!! Interesting compared to the Proxima, it has faster loading torpedoes, and it has 4 rear ones as opposed to the Promixa's 3. However, the Proxima has so many more phasers and those port and starboard rail guns or pulse phasers seem to offer a never ended barrage of fire! I agree this ship looks intimidating for a 3 nacelle dreadnaught.
If I had to guess, since there's no additional canon information, the added power of a larger warp core gave the Federation class the ability to power a third nacelle, more powerful shields and activate a more powerful sensor and deflector array. Also this class experimented with warping in reverse which meant an extra deflector dish on the rear of the engineering hull and moving the shuttle bay to under the neck. This wasn't a problem since torpedoes bays were in the saucer section during this era like the TOS Constitution class. I would say it's only marginally superior to the Constitution class yet was an energy hog, meaning it would never be deployed far from Federation space unless part of a taskforce. Starfleet looked towards more efficient designs to mass produce like the Miranda class that could provide a balance of scientific exploration and firepower without requiring large crews and resources to construct and man.
The Enterprise could already Warp in reverse - we see this in _The Corbomite Maneuver_ and _Balance of Terror._ The rear dish on the Federation Class is directly labelled as a sensor. Also - little known fact - in TOS ships, the "warp cores" are actually integrated inside the nacelles themselves. That third nacelle translates to the separated saucer being able to achieve warp speed on it's own, and altogether the ship can reach Warp 10.
@@Idazmi7 I can see all your points except the warp cores inside the nacelles. We know it's the warp coils in the nacelles and the core is in the engineering section we see alot of in TOS and many schematic drawings and mock ups.
@@ErokCherokee The TOS engineering section was at the back of the saucer hull, which means you're looking at the impulse engines. Not the warp core. The entire idea of the nacelles was to put the far more dangerous antimatter reactors and warp drive engines as far from the crew as possible. In the event of an engine fire or imminent breach, you can detach the entire nacelle instead of trying to eject it from inside the ship.
@@Idazmi7 Disagree. The top of the warp core was near the impulse engines and ran down the neck into the engineering hull. In TOS you could see down the power conduits behind the screen in engineering towards the struts of the nacelles which was down the spine of the engineering section.
The only fault I have with the model is the "rear" deflector. It doesn't make much sense. Unless the ship reverses at high speed/warp as part of its design.

This ship is what that book is based on.
I'm pretty sure that book served as the basis for Star Trek: Into Darkness, a few too many parallels between them.
