In-Depth Look At Life On Rikers Island: ‘Hell, Plain And Simple’

  • Hell. Inhumane. Disgusting. These are some of the words used to describe Rikers Island, New York’s massive jail complex, by Benji Lozano, who spent five months there. Vincent Schiraldi, who was formerly in charge of the facility, agrees. He tells Lester Holt of rampant violence, among other issues, which are exacerbated by a staffing crisis. NBC News recently obtained more than 100 hours of surveillance video from inside the complex. The majority of those held at Rikers are awaiting trial and presumed innocent.

      The fact that it had zero effect apart from that same model of neglect and sadism is the standard for prisons in America. Apparently they're all like that now. I have zero hope for humanity, because we take a crisis and expand upon it to make it profitable at the cost of countless lives. Riker's is a death camp, it is still a death camp, and it is still being used to put innocent people with fingers crossed that they die before a judge can see them, let alone order release.

      You don't get it, most people at Rikers have never been convicted of any crime. Most never will be. The average detainee at Rikers will be incarcerated there for a year and a half before they ever see a preliminary trail judge to get a hearing date. many if convicted receive sentences for less time than they have already served waiting to go to trial. So if you are not rich the NYC justice system works like this. Be accused of a crime, get arrested, go to jail, serve your sentence and then go to court to be adjudicated guilty or innocent. If guilty go straight home from court because you have already over served your adjudicated sentence. All of which is totally unconstitutional yet the city and state get away with it. Because the victims of the system are poor.

      yeah its not that simple. Guards at Rikers use their sick time to work part time security jobs. Its part of the NYC union grift mentality. The union is going to go to bat for you no matter what. They have negotiated a system designed to be easily abused so they do. However because they abuse the system it creates the safety issues that they then complain about and paying both overtime to the guards that do show up to cover for the guards that don't plus the sick pay for the guards scamming the system puts a strain on the budget leading to shortfalls for tools and repairs that they complain make doing the job less safe. The poor conditions caused by all the scamming keeps the inmates, some of them actually dangerous, in a constant state of agitation, the heat, the jail is not actually air conditioned in most inmate areas, lack of food and fear for their safety do to a lack of supervision creates an atmosphere of abuse leading to frequent inmate outburst creating higher than usual assaults Its a perfect circle.

      The solution would be to built 3 system of temporary incarceration:

      Tier two: drug crimes and mild violent crimes like arm robbery
      Tier three: violent crimes, gang related crimes, orginized crime etc
      In all facilities discipline should be EXTREME, with people in solitary cells, conversation btwn inmates strictly forbidden and a tight schedule from 5 am to 10pm, 1 meal a day 2 mins of free time a day and mild force labour, tier one could be in soft forced labour only
      Once condemn everyone is sent to their respective tier prisons and everything said previously its kept, the only change is that all tiers go into hard forced labour

      It doesn’t matter what someone did or is accused of…they should be treated humanely. Most of these people in jail haven’t even been convicted of anything. Most of the people in jail will be getting released at some point, which means they will be back out on the street and in your neighborhood. As someone who has many friends in LE, the biggest issue with many prisons is lack of professionalism amongst the staff. You can't run a well-controlled, disciplined establishment if your staff does whatever they want. Corrections officers need to be paid better, trained better but held to a much higher standard of conduct with much more severe penalties for failing to meet that standard.
    And from a friend who works at Riker's, yes, staff abusing sick leave was very much a thing. He had been there for six months as a CO in 2021 and said that the abuse of sick leave existed both before and after the new contract and that it was so widespread that CO's would joke about it. Discipline is critical in LE, the military or any similar job field. His opinion, going there as a CO after six years in the Army, was that there was a complete lack of discipline and accountability amongst the staff. The problem is, how do we hope to have inmates that will be rehabilitated if there isn't basic discipline and accountability amongst the corrections staff overseeing them?

    This needs systemic change from the ground up. Almost literally. First, most of the people in Rikers have yet to see their day in court. They cannot afford bail, which is targeting low-income and black and latino communities. Second, even some inmates serving time are doing so after being convicted of nonviolent crimes, including drug crimes. Third, let's not forget the scarily high percentage of people who are wrongly convicted.
    Yes, there needs to be renovations done in the complex. Yes, we need more staffing and assurances that will ensure there will not be a staff shortage at any given time. But first and foremost, we need to fix our criminal justice system that targets low-income POC, redefine sentencing for nonviolent crimes and drug crimes, and give everyone their day in court before being sent to one of the worst prisons in America. Guaranteed half of those inmates don't belong there.

    • @Qiturah801
      @Qiturah801 2 года назад +5

      Done already, everything you mentioned has been addressed in bail reform that went into effect in 2020. Only people in rikers are the ones that committed violent felonies ie : murderers, rapists, assaultive individuals, those in possession of drugs, high ranking gang members, now idk about u but the average person doesn’t care if they don’t make bail because they need to be off the streets. The percentage of persons wrongfully accused is extremely LOW, I wish people when stating their opinions consider the facts as well as the victims. So yes we need rikers reformed into clean state of the art facilities with REAL accountability and penalties for these dangerous crooks housed there, they’re too idle they need work not video games to keep them busy.

    • @phoenixluk
      @phoenixluk 2 года назад +2

      @@Qiturah801I'm sorry, did we watch the same video? Also, like I said, people with non-violent related crimes should not be there, including drug possession and theft. You should look at the facts regarding how many white people are incarcerated vs POC and who is able to pay bail and the percentage of white people vs POC are convicted. And what are the prison sentences for the same crime because I bet you it's different. Also the number of wrongly convicted people are mostly POC who had no evidence against them except an racist criminal justice system.

      @Qiturah801 2 года назад +2

      @@phoenixluk we absolutely did watch the same video, what I’m trying to understand is why YOU think someone shouldn’t be placed in jail because they’re a poc. Idk what ethnicity the criminal is, they need to go to jail, idk if they can’t post bail that’s the consequence of being a criminal. Can’t pay the bail, do the time, don’t do the crime. Now once again, the only people housed in rulers are VIOLENT offenders, do u live under a rock or out of state, there’s literally blatant theft everywhere without consequence nor jail for the thieves, however the ones suffering are the employees who are losing their jobs and the businesses that can’t afford to stay open. But hey U advocate for criminals so you obviously don’t care. If they’re wrongfully accused then they’re released then paid. Majority of crime committed are done in black and brown communities, we are suffering at the hands of gangs, we don’t need soft handed approaches
