Jay Kristoff's prose was literally a work of art, it was beautiful. Before him I though Jodi Picoult was good, but this guy is on a masterful level. If I was to give an example of amazing prose, I'd hand them Empire of the Vampire! Hands down.
Finished this book this morning, really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge vampire fan but this book did it really well. Never night is brilliant and has one of the best opening lines in my opinion. It took a while to get into this book, I read a lot of grim dark so humour isn't always abundant but Jay made me laugh and cry, sign of a great book. When you get round to Never Night, look out the Hobb moments, Jay's definitely a fan.
That's awesome, I can't wait to give it a shot later this year!
Interview With the Vampire and The Witcher had a love child and it was this.
Perfectly stated!
So happy you liked this! I can't wait to pick this up soon :)
Thanks, it was an incredibly pleasant surprise!
Probably only read twilight 😂😂😂. Empire is not bad but predictable as fuck and generic vamps.
Amazing book ! Absolutely loved it ! :)
Hmm maybe I’ll start this for my next read! Glad you enjoyed it! I’ve heard Kristoffs’ Nevernight trilogy is good too.
Yeah I've heard the same, I'm going to try to read it in 2023.
Suggestions for read-alikes???
This is my favorite book!
I love this book so much. I never thought id like a vampire book.
Agreed, I usually HATE vampires.
I read this also a couple of months ago this is one of my best books of 2022 that I read non-stop from start to very visceral and dark, one of those books I was sad that it was over, it was a great piece of vampire fantasy fiction never read nothing like it with vampires in it, definitely a book I would recommend to anyone, not no Twilight vampires here, great video keep up the good content
Yeah hard agree! The second book should be out this year!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews I hope the second book comes out this year
This is my favorite book ❤
Yeah it totally blew me away.
I started this book yesterday. Most of the reviews I see are very positive, but some are just pure scorn for it. Lol do you also have an instagram book page?
Nope, just RUclips and Twitter.
Now you gotta read nevernight, which is another masterpiece
Yup, it's now on my TBR list!
This was a fantastic book, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you!
I’m 40% in and it’s reminding me and giving me a similar feel to Blood Song which is a top 10 book for me.
so should i read this if the second book isnt out yet?
Definitely! The next book comes out in February.
thank you! its for a friend who will only read completed series haha. im worried they wont read it.@@MattsFantasyBookReviews
I read Kristoff's first published series, think something called Lotus War, way back when I started reading fiction again. Keep in mind I've never read grimdark at that point.
That series is an asian inspired grimdark steampunk fantasy.
I was not prepared. Some elements I loved, but the bleak grimdark take was rough on me. That was why I didn't enjoy the second and third book as much.
I should reread that series, I believe I'll be able to appreciate it much more.
Kristoff is a good writer, glad you liked this one, it's on the evergrowing tbr pile.
Good non spoiler review.
Thank you!
Another great review! Glad you loved the book... I'm planning to read it around Halloween 😁
Great time to do it!
Can't wait for book 2 in a few weeks.
I'm reading book #2 right now! :)
It's a very good book, I agree with you on the framing narrative and its potential problems, I am not a fan of that technique because how it lower the stakes, if you are narrating a fight occurred years ago we already know you survived so the fight by itself is less exiting, we know the character survived some how, fortunately in this book the story is told in a way so good and immersive that the use of that technique was barely and inconvenience, another plus is the illustrations, the author use them to enhance the story and I loved them, I am a fan of the author and I can see his progression as a writer, "The Nevernight Chronicle" is very good too and "The Lotus Wars" is no masterpiece but enjoyable nonetheless.
Ugh I'm so upset now that I read on kindle because I didn't get any of the illustrations! Ugh!
I'm definitely going to give his other books a try soon - thanks for the recommendations.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Oh I didn't know the kindle version comes without the illustrations, what a shame, Jean-François is constantly drawing during Gabriel's narration and those drawings are illustrated in the book, there're a lot of them 50+ I think, I remember the author saying in an interview he was adamant with the published about the need of those illustrations as a part of how the story is told.
@@danbe6280 NOOOOOOOO. Oh well, good book to re-read and it will add that extra element.
So glad to hear you read on kindle. Will sub and follow for that alone. Ebooks rock! As for the book I am very intrigued
@@mrgauth Yeah I didn't think I would like them, but once I got one I fell in love!
