Appreciate the review. I especially love the unboxing. Your video was vivid and clear with close shots of all angles of the player. Also appreciated you went straight to the cons first. Does this player involve running any updates?
I have found the cause and workaround fix to the freezing issues. My player only ever freezes if its on a wifi connection. I think it occurs when the wifi signal strength drops. If I disable the wifi connection or plug it in with a cable to the internet, it never, ever ever freezes. Have gone 2 years with no freezes... Tried connecting to wifi after 2 years... Boom, freezing issue is back. Clear the network settings and dont connect it to wifi, frezing issue once again gone.
Thank you! I've heard someone else mention the same thing and others offer different solutions as well. It's still not a good luck regardless for Sony.
The latest firmware seems to have fixed the freezing issues some users reported. The fact there there is still no auto-dolby vision selector as of early 2024 is very much a hassle though. I don't know why Sony can't implement this on a $400 device. If you accidentally leave the dolby vision setting on some movies look fine, but others look completely ridiculous and obviously wrong. It's fine if you as the primary user know the ins and outs of the player, but if a less technical family member wants to watch a movie they may not understand why their blu ray suddenly looks completely blown out on an expensive 4k tv because they have dolby vision enabled on an older film.
I've heard some sprinkles of info from others that that's the case! I'm hoping it's true. And yes, I agree with the Dolby Vision toggle. I'm hoping Sony and other major retailers will release updated players in the near future, but I'm not hopeful.
I have two now for three years, mine never froze once. It’s build like a tank and it will play any media format: CD, SACD, DVD Video, DVD Audio, Blu-Ray Video and even Blu-Ray Audio, and last but not least UHD. It also has CODECs to decode nearly any image or sound format.
The 4K disc freezing is what brought me here. I have a UBP-X800 model that freezes on 4Ks all the time and I was wondering if upgrading to the newer model would make a difference. Sounds like a no.
After more than a year and half with this player, I snapped and got a UB820 for $350 on sale. 1 out of 5 4k discs would have a spot that would freeze, usually towards the end of them movie.
@WarandNews I would go with either the UB420 or UB820. Both are great players, and I have a video comparing the two here: ruclips.net/video/q6rU8LmkKH4/видео.html
@JonathanRL98 they were brand new disks and they all play fine on the panasonic. I have heard that about the UB820, but it is not my personal experience.
I have a 9 series 65” curved Samsung w/One Connect Box and it was bundled with a Samsung 4K UHD player, also curved face plate, has worked flawlessly since I bought it in 2015, the remote is small and crappy. I found a bigger remote with back lit buttons that’s compatible. Now it’s mid ‘24 and I’m thinking of buying a 2nd player, perhaps a bigger and better one that can play virtually every disc type (SACD) and offer a few more bells and whistles. If Sony indeed has issued firmware/software updates, this is an older model 2013 ?, would it be a good choice today ? I have been very interested in buying a Region Free player, and this is being sold on eBay by 220-Electronics, they offer a lifetime service/warranty to their buyers. This glitchy/freezing issue has me on pause until I can determine if this is a serious or limited batch that was built. Do you think that these NOS units being sold and modded to be region free have been vetted out by 220-E ? Thanks in advance for your time.
It's honestly hard to say. Some commenters have said the latest firmware update has fixed it, others have said you have to turn off 4K upscaling in the settings, and others still complain that it's happening to them. It seems to be a roll of the dice!
@@b-icemedia, I called 220-Electronics and spoke with a gentleman who answered all my questions and allayed my fears about the freezing issues and being this is a fresh built new model with all the updates in place. Question for the video poster I'm curious to know if anyone has tried using a USB hard drive instead of the USB memory stick does this DVD Blu-ray player allow for streaming from a USB hard drive with a movie with MKV files thanks for your answer
It's main con is it doesn't have any display. Without display, it is very hard to play CD or SACD. Or it has to be connected to a TV or monitor to see what's going on.

I'm seeing in this video of yours that the menu on my player is different, I'm Italian and I set the menu in Italian. "Accessibility Setting" and "4K Upscale Setting" are missing from my menu, is this normal? Thank you

I'm really glad I looked up reviews on this player before even considering it. What are your thoughts on the LG UBK-90? From what I can tell, it does meet my bare minimum requirements. Gonna be connecting a 4k Blu-ray player to my LG OLED65C2PUA 65" 2022 OLED, and use the audio only connection directly to my ATMOS/DTS X system. One of my main questions is, how would I mod it to be region free for Blu-ray and DVD? As I am an anime fan who also reads Light Novels and manga, some of the series I want are either cheaper or only available as Region B/2. For example, when I was adding HighSchool DxD to my Amazon anime list, I could only find HighSchool DxD New (Season 2) as Region B/2 Blu-ray. I want to mod it to where regardless if I get LG's or Panasonic's 4k Blu-ray player, I want to mod them to where they'll play Region A, B, and C (1, 2, and 3 for DVD's). If I get a Panasonic, I'll be going with the DP-UB820.
I don't know anything about that player just yet, but I will have it in next month for review! If you want to mod your player, you would need to micro solder a chip on the board (most common way to do it), but I would just personally buy one already pre-modded on Amazon.
