I watch other drivers and the ones who always amaze me, even after all these years, are the drivers who just dither along with no spatial awareness and look no further than the end of their bonnet. I am with Neil on the body language segment. I arrive at work and home not remembering my drive. So much so that I end up at the office sometimes on a day off. However, I do remember the music I am singing and the perfect heel and toe I pull off occasionally. Glad you chaps are back, keep up the great conversations.
As a driving instructor, I use the "cars body language" term quite a lot. Is clear what people are about to do when you actually take in the details etc. Love this nerdy podcast.
Bloody important, the ammount of dangerous situations that can be avoided just by observing and judge what is happening with traffic, is a almost daily usable skill.
I completely agree! Watching the head / posture of a driver & observing their previous manœuvres gives you an almost telepathic ability to know what someone is going to do next - I use it everyday.

Which one has the most satisfying feeling of opening the door, which has the best design, the best position, the best sound. The interior opening latch or handle/pull could be under the same debate or a whole other subject. Would love to hear your thoughts. Matt
Having recently replaced the driver's door sealing rubber on my E39 I can announce that it was the best value, simple job I've done on the car. The glorious thunk as the door closes gives me a little lift every time!
Totally understand the "investment" argument to the other half. On a much lower level I've just got a Z4m on the back of the same line of thinking. Same S54 engine as the clownshoe that was suggested but around a quarter of the price currently. Manual and a lot of fun and a shape that I think will become rarer as cars progress into smaller and smaller engines.
Manish is the bellweather of this group. I love the way in the old podcast it was him awkwardly and begrudgingly becoming a petrol head. Now, since he's a fully infected car tragic, he's spending proper money retrimming his Ferrari, and is all in. I've seen this happen to many a friend who has come too close to our group of petrol heads. It infects them all! No known cure either. We need help 😂
If Lawrence Stroll can build up Aston Martin to win the championship, he will be immortalised as the man who made Aston Martin memorable for something other than a fictional spy.
So glad you guys are back. My only feedback is don't feel the need to jump to the next subject. I'd happily listen to you talk about the future of EVs or even which key is your favourite for an hour plus. We are all car nerds here, after all. Keep up the good work guys!
The body language thing is so true. My son is 16 so only has one more year to go before he gets some keys of his own, and for a few years we have played the game that when we come up on people and I detect something, I ask him what they are going to do, and he has started to pick up on it. It's a great skill to learn to keep safe, just to be able to see who is likely to pull out because they are not paying attention, or who is wandering a bit becuase they are sleepy or on their phone.
My dad did something similar with me (despite having subsequently aged into spending most drives in Neil Clifford territory); definitely good on you for doing it. His primary philosophy was to "drive so that nobody else has to change their mind." That said, I learned more on effective driving from riding motorcycles: the potential for personal peril involved focuses the mind. Looking ahead to predict potential situations and ensure a primary and secondary escape route that won't get you killed is super helpful when driving too; not to mention assessing road/traction conditions. I can't help myself from providing color commentary with my significant other, and I get an identical response to Manish: "You have anger issues" lol. Even though I'm not angry at all. If I say so myself of course.
My favorite car break in was my Miata I left the keys in. I used a metal coat hanger and popped the convertible top to get. Also wing windows in older cars and the rear glass on older trucks when the latch was broken.
I get this now👍🏼 Episode 1 was kinda interesting but I felt like a stranger looking in on your very obvious rapport amongst friends. Episode 2, I’m sat in the evening with a large glass of Rioja, laughing along and agreeing/arguing with the 4 of you as if I was the 5th member. thinking about driving body language. If I'm in lane 2 and see in lane 1 a car gaining on the vehicle in front, I naturally move to lane 3 even before they indicate. thinking "he's gonna want to get round that soon" I even say it out loud on occasion now I think about it haha. Then it's always nice when they give you a thumbs up afterwards or flash you back to lane 2 after passing them.
Chris Cooper, I understand what you mean about car body language. I can see and feel what other drivers are about to do. It is that 6th sense from experience. Which many young drivers are missing. I call it self preservation. I once heard a Police driver saying that you should make your car present body language. It conveys that you are there and apart from indicators, helps to make other users aware of what is happening.

I feel the important distinction here is that these are British Peugeot / Citroen drivers you’re avoiding? My experience of French people in French cars is that they’re driven everywhere as though it’s a hill climb event.
2 car garage: You plan to rob a bank. You're not the most ambitious thief in the world so you only plan to steal 100,000£. You need 2 getaway cars, but you don't own your own vehicle. You do, however, have a 'friend' that is willing to lend you some money to buy one for this auspicious endeavour. You plan on paying him back with the 100,000£ you nick from aforementioned bank. You plan to 'hit' the bank at traffic hour so the first car you'll need must be small enough to cut through traffic, fast enough to outrun the fuzz as well as mundane enough to not standout in a traffic jam if seen via police helicopter The second car is for the second leg of the getaway. The terrain you'll need to cover includes some serious off roading as you plan to bury the cash in an empty field. The money you spend on the car must be paid back, so whatever you're left with from your 100,000£ is all yours.

Sorry to contradict Manish, Steve McQueen’s last movie was THE HUNTER (1980), I watched it as 14 year old when it was released - always loved Steve, no one as cool as that man.
You can definitely have a 2-door Sedan in the US. Almost every 2-door version of a 4-door sedan was still called a "sedan". A Coupe would be something with a smaller rear seat area, possibly a shortened roofline or wheelbase, but generally a car with a smaller interior volume.
The best car key ever was the key to Paula Hamilton's 1987 MK II Golf GTi. Aesthetically the key itself was perfect, with the cut-out VW symbol in the middle of a discreet plastic disc. But best of all, in the iconic VW advertisement, she posts the diamond ring back through the door of the Chelsea Mews she is vacating. She chucks the pearls and the broach in the bin and the gutter, She is about to throw the key to her Golf down a drain but the way that the key encapsulates the car makes her change her mind. She smiles, she tosses the key up in the air and catches it, and then (best of all) opens the door by putting the key in the door and turning it, because this was when central locking was an option that you didn't spec for your mistress, if you could get away with it. That was the most iconic key ever.
As ever, Mr Clifford makes perfect sense with regards to the future and the environment (albeit we then balk at the money the whole Team seem to have spent on cars!)

I agree with Neil, manuals are the starting point. 4.7 V8 2016 Vantage manual / roadster. The V12 is obvious but isn’t cheap enough (still way over £50k) now to be investments whereas the V8’s have nosedived so there’s room there. Also any manual Ferrari (none under £50k really). Auto wise - Maserati MC Stradale the ones with no back seats. Only a few made, one of the best noises out a car and aggressive looking. Early Jaguar F Type SVR coupe or convertible (the original V8S convertible) rwd only.
You can get a decent Ferrari for under £50k, the issue will be the recommissioning or catching up on the skipped maintenance. Sadly even very well kept Ferraris present issues, often expensive ones. The should rebrand as Lotac: lots of trouble, always costly ☺️
I don't think F355 is 50k but damn they are special things to look at and drive. And that smell! And Mr. Harris is quite right about the M Coupe. They are special and it just happened to be the car that I learned how to drive properly up the mountains in. I was a 15 yo here in America switching seats with Dad once we got on up the hill. We did driving lessons every other weekend and I will never forget how great an M Coupe is. Thank you for mentioning that one
My favourite car key ,or rather keys were the keys to my Lancia Fulvia HF . Two small keys , one black and one white and one for the ignition and the other for the doors and boot. According to Lancia designed not to spoil the look of your tailored jacket when pocketed. The key to my AMG now seems huge to me now

Last time y'all discussed keys, I was hoping y'all would see my comment about Royal Clover keys! They're a 'fashion' key you could get in Japan that could have all kinds of different designs, also there are Japanese cars with cool keys, the Nissan Silvia, Lauren, Cedric, in fact Nissan loves to make a cool key. For my JDM Trueno I have a Faux gold key with a Canadian coin in the center with a "gem" at each corner. The gems have fallen off over time but it's still the coolest key
I’m gonna throw my key in the ring, I think the best key is the 80’s/90’s Volkswagen key! The logo surrounded by the hard wethers original plastic. It was great. And let’s not forget the Ford key with the led torch that illuminates at least 10cm
On the subject of keys, i had a Mk1 Fabia as a courtsey car and that had 2 keys. One for the door and the other for the ignition. I always got the wrong key for the door as they were both identical keys.

I can’t believe you poo poo’d the Jazz. I often drive my youngest sons ‘17 1.4 Jazz. Purchased from an older lady with 10k on the clock and cracked tyres. A good service and decent rubber it is sooo much fun to drive. Snickity manual gear change with a revvy Vtec engine and all the toys without the irritating modern driver aids. You can thrash the living daylights out of it and you’re still only doing 50mph 😂 A real joy to drive.

I agree with Neil and I’ve been saying it for years we don’t need new cars, use what we have in this country already, I even had the idea of what’s stopping car companies doing upgrade packages for older models for newer tech or interior if wanted instead of new cars

I don't know how used car market in Britain works, so I'm just going to comment on the perspective of my country Malaysia. At this time of writing, £50k is about MYR 283k. For me, it's an easy BMW M3 E92 Manual. Just a few months ago I saw one in black selling for MYR 255k at an online classified website. Even before that, I saw one in silver selling for less than MYR 200k at that same website. Most M3 E92 being sold there are equipped with DCT. Very few comes with Manual.
Going through my car keys … I rather like a traditional old tractor key… and the E24 key that had a mini torch in it. However I’m now on pistonheads with the filters: £50k. Manual Pre-99.

Because I recall Volvo themselves releasing their own data, concluding that the combustion engine version of the same car has to do 120k miles to produce as much carbon as just the manufacturing phase of the EV... So I'm glad they've seen sense after setting themselves an unnecessary goal. We need to take a breath. A combustion engine vehicle running on synthetic fuel is the most sustainable, cheapest and green solution by a huge margin, with no need for a new infrastructure. Why not make it law that all new cars must run on synthetic fuel by 2030? That's more doable but unfortunately the 'corridors of power' are refusing to even acknowledge it as a solution. Form your own conspiracies why... I love EV's and I think they offer tremendous advantages over combustion vehicles in so many ways... But these bullying tactics and guilt propaganda have been terrible PR for EV's. They just make no sense financially, logistically or environmentally as THE sole answer at this stage, and it's going to take a long time to phase it in correctly and do it the right way. Sincere apologies, that escalated into an unsolicited rant didn't it...
I'm so glad to know I'm not alone with the driving body language. Honestly the people that are oblivious to it are the ones that drive me mad on the road. It's kinda like ignorance is bliss, they just go about their drive with no idea how they've wrecked mine.
34:35 I hate keyless start so much. So often I’m looking for my mini keys can’t find them then go check the car and I’ve put them in the cup holder or on the passenger seat and just walked off car still unlocked. I like my Land Rover proper key I can’t leave the key behind because the bloody engine would still be on
We used to use a “ forkie “ to break into cars as a kid. Basically getting a fork and bending down both outside prongs and squeezing the middle two together! Aka a forkie
I'm with Neil on the Body Language bit. The car is my happy place and even basic mundane trips. I don't get wound up by the outside world. I'm in my car. And I'm driving it. Once I step outside is when things turn to shit.
Predicting the drivers around you on the roadis a very human thing. It is also why automating driving is so difficult. Predicting drivers actions while driving , computers will likely never replicate. Oh, and the human brain operates on about 3 watts of power. Pretty efficient.
The F82 M4CS is the best investment for around £50k. Mine cost the original owner £108k and I picked it up when it was 4-5yrs old at £48k (low miles, low owners, rare frozen paint finish, CCB’s) At least this is what I told my other half when I bought it 👀😆

You can get a decent Ferrari for under £50k, the issue will be the recommissioning or catching up on the skipped maintenance.
Sadly even very well kept Ferraris present issues, often expensive ones. The should rebrand as Lotac: lots of trouble, always costly ☺️
I don't think F355 is 50k but damn they are special things to look at and drive. And that smell! And Mr. Harris is quite right about the M Coupe. They are special and it just happened to be the car that I learned how to drive properly up the mountains in. I was a 15 yo here in America switching seats with Dad once we got on up the hill. We did driving lessons every other weekend and I will never forget how great an M Coupe is. Thank you for mentioning that one
For me the Z4M and Z3M Coupe is peak M.
E46/E36 M3 in a pretty but quirky exterior and interior.
Not a desirable one but I found a few leggy F1 convertibles in that range
My favourite car key ,or rather keys were the keys to my Lancia Fulvia HF . Two small keys , one black and one white and one for the ignition and the other for the doors and boot. According to Lancia designed not to spoil the look of your tailored jacket when pocketed. The key to my AMG now seems huge to me now

Last time y'all discussed keys, I was hoping y'all would see my comment about Royal Clover keys! They're a 'fashion' key you could get in Japan that could have all kinds of different designs, also there are Japanese cars with cool keys, the Nissan Silvia, Lauren, Cedric, in fact Nissan loves to make a cool key. For my JDM Trueno I have a Faux gold key with a Canadian coin in the center with a "gem" at each corner. The gems have fallen off over time but it's still the coolest key

I’m gonna throw my key in the ring, I think the best key is the 80’s/90’s Volkswagen key! The logo surrounded by the hard wethers original plastic. It was great.
And let’s not forget the Ford key with the led torch that illuminates at least 10cm
On the subject of keys, i had a Mk1 Fabia as a courtsey car and that had 2 keys. One for the door and the other for the ignition. I always got the wrong key for the door as they were both identical keys.

I can’t believe you poo poo’d the Jazz. I often drive my youngest sons ‘17 1.4 Jazz. Purchased from an older lady with 10k on the clock and cracked tyres.
A good service and decent rubber it is sooo much fun to drive. Snickity manual gear change with a revvy Vtec engine and all the toys without the irritating modern driver aids. You can thrash the living daylights out of it and you’re still only doing 50mph 😂

I even had the idea of what’s stopping car companies doing upgrade packages for older models for newer tech or interior if wanted instead of new cars

I don't know how used car market in Britain works, so I'm just going to comment on the perspective of my country Malaysia. At this time of writing, £50k is about MYR 283k. For me, it's an easy BMW M3 E92 Manual. Just a few months ago I saw one in black selling for MYR 255k at an online classified website. Even before that, I saw one in silver selling for less than MYR 200k at that same website. Most M3 E92 being sold there are equipped with DCT. Very few comes with Manual.
Going through my car keys … I rather like a traditional old tractor key… and the E24 key that had a mini torch in it.
However I’m now on pistonheads with the filters:

I had to laugh at the story about Volvo dumping their 2030 EV goal... Because I recall Volvo themselves releasing their own data, concluding that the combustion engine version of the same car has to do 120k miles to produce as much carbon as just the manufacturing phase of the EV... So I'm glad they've seen sense after setting themselves an unnecessary goal. We need to take a breath.
A combustion engine vehicle running on synthetic fuel is the most sustainable, cheapest and green solution by a huge margin, with no need for a new infrastructure. Why not make it law that all new cars must run on synthetic fuel by 2030? That's more doable but unfortunately the 'corridors of power' are refusing to even acknowledge it as a solution. Form your own conspiracies why...
I love EV's and I think they offer tremendous advantages over combustion vehicles in so many ways... But these bullying tactics and guilt propaganda have been terrible PR for EV's. They just make no sense financially, logistically or environmentally as THE sole answer at this stage, and it's going to take a long time to phase it in correctly and do it the right way.

I'm so glad to know I'm not alone with the driving body language. Honestly the people that are oblivious to it are the ones that drive me mad on the road. It's kinda like ignorance is bliss, they just go about their drive with no idea how they've wrecked mine.

We used to use a “ forkie “ to break into cars as a kid. Basically getting a fork and bending down both outside prongs and squeezing the middle two together! Aka a forkie
I'm with Neil on the Body Language bit. The car is my happy place and even basic mundane trips. I don't get wound up by the outside world. I'm in my car. And I'm driving it. Once I step outside is when things turn to shit.
Predicting the drivers around you on the roadis a very human thing. It is also why automating driving is so difficult. Predicting drivers actions while driving , computers will likely never replicate. Oh, and the human brain operates on about 3 watts of power. Pretty efficient.

The F82 M4CS is the best investment for around £50k. Mine cost the original owner £108k and I picked it up when it was 4-5yrs old at £48k (low miles, low owners, rare frozen paint finish, CCB’s)
