I don't know why anybody would DE-monitize these videos. They should be paying YOU for the promotion.
Many of your viewers were not even born when these songs were popular. If I was an aging musician (I am) I would love somebody to sing my praises to a new audience. It took a real musician to make it back in the day. The groups, their labels and estates should be honored that you show off their mastery to people (like me) that may not have listened closely enough the first time. You're the best. Thank you...

It’s great you are sharing your years of expertise with a an audience of all ages. This is truly where I think RUclips excels, and it’s people like you that make RUclips what it is today. Keep up the great work.

To get the pick out by shaking you need to...
    A) turn the guitar upside down
    B) shake the guitar up and down
    C) move the guitar toward and away from you, or left and right, so the sound hole gets under the pick while it's up in the air. You've got the bracing to get over, so you have to throw the pick up with the guitar, then move the soundhole over, under it.
    Hope that helps

Rick, if you want to get rid of arthritis try rubbing some tumeric essential oil on the trouble location, $20 through ebay, and you should be on your way. If the location has lots of muscle over it, it may not be able to penetrate through to a joint but a finger/thumb should present no problem. If someone has Rick's direct email, please see that he gets the info so he can play without pain.

Best way to remove plectrum from sound hole: A #2 Pencil with eraser is best, I keep a Home Depot Carpenter pencil in all my guitar cases to lube my nut with graphite when changing strings and use one of these. You bounce the pick to under the sound hole. You stick the pencil inbetween the strings and press it to the pick. You then while holding the pick in place with the pencil turn guitar over sound hole down and pull pencil away and the pick ALWAYS falls out. I have used pens and chopsticks before in a pinch ;-P

Happy Sunday, I’ve been playing for about a year and eight months now and sometimes it’s good to go back and review basic concepts from somebody who you have established trust. So after watching you for the last year and eight months, I just wanted to give you a shout out and say thank you. The pain in my fingertips lasted many months… despite playing every day, but that was never an issue for me at least ….I knew not to stop just like when I studied my silver flute with open holes, and eventually played in the army band many decades ago. Needless to say your presence here on RUclips has been fabulous for more people than you can imagine unless you’re a absolute savant….. I wish you and your family the best as we transition into the waning months of 2022!!! All of your interviews have been fabulous and I hope many elementary music school teachers are sharing your site as additional source of insight & inspiration. … Stay healthy Rick, so the world can enjoy you for as long as possible!

I've been playin the axe since late 1992. Got some Spanish guitar classes first then binned it and jumped onto the electric. Got sort of career and even gained the bits of respect after a while. Then in 2013 my daughter was born, so I quit my session musician job and went on random daily job contract with the acoustic being nearly the only choice. No practice, just strumming chords, watching YT vids over the nights and slowly learning things I have seen. 3-5 yrs later I have gained a lot in music theory, chords and voicings use, re-shaped my coordination, put my fretting hand in the right position, learnt some picking and fingering patterns, got stronger tone and almost battered the stage fright. It would never happened if this was not for the acoustic. This gives the guitarist a solid base. If you don't own one - get it immediately.

So Rick hear me out. After 4 years of faking my way thru as the 2nd chair guitar in my HS jazz BAND I entered the local JC. I only took two semesters of traditional college-level music. I'd been playing guitar at that point for 8 years mostly Rock however my father's friend had studied with the Andres Segovia and had kindly showed me quite a few techniques and other cool stuff. He opened my eyes early on so I was trying to learn how to play just about everything. I decided to attend Musician's Institute back when it was probably a little different that it is now...30 years ago. Showing up at school in '89 there were mainly shredders
(Obsessed steve vai evh srv etc)
and Euro Jazz dudes (obsessed with larry carlton steely dan and yngwie?!) which is like being in a bad 80's version of the musical West Side Story...you were either a shark or a jet if you get my drift. Your Channel is everything I miss about total immersion in musical study. I went from struggling in a composition and Theory based music program- where I failed sight singing...twice! - to going to a totally performance-based program. And what was the most popular show every student watched besides David Letterman? It was Night Music with David Sanborn. The SCHOOL library had every episode on tape we all talked about it and loved it...it brought the tribes together like nothing else... I think it's high time you find some kind of network or cable or internet channel who can put your teachings into a performance type show format and therefore pay you what you deserve and they can pay for all the clearances and the rights to all the music that is played based on standard broadcast BMI ASCAP licensing agreements Etc. Google has no understanding truly of what it is you're trying to do therefore you fall into the Trap of being demonetized because yes people who author compositions deserve to get paid just as you would want to get paid for your compositions. Forgive me it's been a long day but I do think it's time for you to find a better platform for your gift of teaching the world music from the guitar players point of view.
Who else could interview Peter Frampton and Larry Carlton and make it fascinating to GUITAR players, musicians and non musicians alike but you sir? It's time to leave YOU TUBE in your rear view mirror. I just wish I could suggest your next step. Perhaps someone has an idea? And yes they are cutting music in school's every year because football is proven to help any small town's economy.
Love your Channel keep it up

I don't know if anyone has yet made this comment, but to get the pick out from inside the guitar, I've found the best way is to be really subtle- turn the guitar upside down (sound hole facing parallel to the floor) and very slowly, gently slide it around... works way better than frantic furious jiggling and shaking (took me ages to figure that out, ha!)... I'm enjoying your videos, this one's especially useful for me, thanks!

Great video Rick, it took me back to when I was learning to play guitar. I am so surprised though that people don't know these techniques. For me they are so much a part of how I play guitar and how I learned to play that if I didn't use them, I wouldn't play the guitar. Back in 1963/64 I learned to play guitar with Peter, Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, the early Beatles, Stones, John Denver etc. There is nothing quite so satisfying as sitting down with a record and figuring out a particular technique or a complete song. The most important source we had, as folk singer, other than our records was the folk song "Fake Book". Do any of you remember those books?

Once you have this technique down it is nearly automatic.. Good luck

Dropping a pick into the acoustic guitar body is never fun. I hop the pick over the bottom braces until it's in a 'bay' under the sound hole... I then quickly spin the guitar on its longitudal axis to the upside down position... that gets the pick onto the underside of the guitar top so it can slide out of the sound hole if it did not already pop out when the guitar was spun 180 degrees (upside down). Hi Rick, I have just recently started watching some of your videos that happen to come up with my subscribing to "guitar tricks". I like your informal and "fire side chat" style. I started playing when I was 8 years old and from the time I was about 20? until age 75? I practiced classical style guitar with a relatively inexpensive set of guitars. At one time I had a separate guitar in four places that I live as it is too difficult to fly with a guitar. I got crippling arthritus in my left hand and also have ET which has reduced the accuracy of picking with my right hand and I gave up playing for two years and lost my callouses but a little over a year ago (I just turned 82 last week) I resumed playing because I missed it so much and have learned to work around my handicap. I recently purchased a superb capo called a Thalia Capo that you can change with your right hand "on the fly" that eliminates the need to do bar chords which I can no longer make clean.
I found the section you gave on alternate tuning (especially the open E) very interesting but fear that trying it would screw up my long time famiiarlity with regular EADGBE tuning.
ONE thing that is annoying (and I suspect it is NOT your video but my internet) there are sections where your video freezes and only your voice and the sound of your voice continues. I am at a Summer Cottage where we do not have a fast internet and what I do to avoid the stop and go of some streaming video is to just pause for a while untlt the send can stay ahead of the play. BUT THAT DOES NOT WORK FOR YOUR VIDEO!??
    -Richard

Pick removal - Normal playing position, shake pick to area right below hole on side. Lay flat on back and center pick under hole. Quick motion, lift, rotate and shake pick straight out of the hole. I get it first shot 95% of the time :) Maybe I will make a video of that! :)

I use thumb picks. I cut them off shorter to suit my need then file a beveled edge on them. The best way to them is with a toe nail clipper, LOL. Be careful not to cut them too short or the part that wraps around the thumb will hook your bass string occasionally. I totally agree that too long a thumb pick is no good. Just my opinion. You play great btw.

  • @1allstarman

I can teach you to remove the pick ... Hold the guitar flat on your lap with the sound hole up , locate the pick inside the guitar , and by lifting up quickly and moving the guitar apropriately , as required , side to side, move the pick to directly under the sound hole .The grab the guitar , one hand by the neck and the other the body where the strap button would be , with you thumb on the top at the top seam and your several fingers wrapping around to the back . .then you raise the guitar up quickly and flip it 180 degrees the pick will fall out through the sound hole !

I don't know if someone typed it yet but to get the pick out of acoustic guitars I shake it so the pick is directly under the soundhole then I use a pencil to pin it down(eraser side of course), then carefully flip the guitar down. Release the pencil and the pick should drop straight down.

Hey Rick, it IS possible to fight someone of those borderline copyright strikes. If you want to take on that headache and commit to getting a lawyer, I guess that's something you'll have to decide. But I know that people who fight those borderline ones often win. So that's something to look into if you wanted. But if you'd rather avoid the hassle and headache, that makes perfect sense to me lol.

@ 9:45 in video.... I also recommend Mario giuliani's 120 studies for right hand. I've actually found it online free. I've got an old copy in standard notation I keep for the memories, but u can find it online free and in tab now. I recommend the book to people looking to get that right-hand (picking hand) going. Can get a little monotonous sounding after a few dozen studies because basically it's variations of a 3 chord progression - the same one... LoL so get your capo ready. No need to finish the book either. Your right hand will amaze u even after u nail the first few

Getting a pick out of the box: rather than holding the guitar upside-down and shaking vigorously, hold it with sound-hole up and shake it until you see the pick land on the back beneath the sound-hole. Then shake it gently to position it in the middle right below the sound-hole. Quickly flip the guitar over and the pick should fall out.

Thank You for another great video! So many good reasons to put time in on an acoustic guitar, it's my preferred means of practicing or learning new tunes but also just for sitting on the porch or around a fire playing for friends, it's a lot more "group friendly" than hitting them with a stack of amps. :)
That said, it's also nice to be able to plug in and tear it up on the same guitar, so having an acoustic-electric is kind of the best of both worlds... if you mic up the sound hole and record that, along with the powered output running through an effects box, you can play a piece 1 time and end up with 2 very unique recordings to use in a mix.

Getting picks out: hold guitar flat, soundhole down. Jolt the guitar vertically until you hear the pick bounce, noting where the sound comes from, then repeat angling the body to encourage the pick to jump over the braces and work its way towards the hole. Usually jumps out after a few goes. Then spend 10 minutes trying find where it landed on the floor. ;-)

Ok Rick, here's a question that no guitar player I've met has been able to answer..... There are names for left hand techniques... Hammer-On, Pull-Off, Slide, Bend, Roll etc..... there is one technique every guitar player learns that seems to have no name. Imagine you are playing Johnny B. Goode, for example, in the key of A.... You will play an A7 barre chord at the 5th fret, your right hand will play an eighth note strumming pattern (all down strokes, 1&2&3&4&...), on beats 2& and 4& you will add your pinky to the 9th fret on the 5th string and take it off again on Beats 1& and 3&. Pinky up, pinky down, pinky up, pinky down etc.... Got it? WHAT'S THAT CALLED?????
