- Enjoy this flashback to ten years ago at TrainFestival 2009, where Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 and Pere Marquette engine no. 1225, both products of the Lima Locomotive Works, were reunited in Owosso, Michigan at the Steam Railroading Institute. This is an excerpt from the official TrainFestival 2009 DVD, with then SRI Executive Director TJ Gaffney and Chief Mechanical Officer Greg Udolph. The documentary provided viewers an exclusive look behind-the-scenes of one of the largest railroad events in recent memory!

If steam locomotives could talk, imagine the stories they'd tell.
They do talk, they just speak their own language
Omg so heart warming
"Well, it must've been about.... 30 years ago, me and Pere were up over there in Owosso, I was staying over for awhile, you know, for the kids, and we went out this one day and pulled trains next to each other for the cameras, you know, smile and wave that sort of thing. Well wouldn't you know it but adang buck, good 14 points walks onto the track? Now I've got 2 choices, I hit it, or blow my whistle in an attempt to get it to move, because I just couldn't live with myself hitting a poor animal like that, so I whistle to get it to move, and there must've been barely 5 feet between us when it moved. To this day the cameras think iwas whistling at them. Pere laughed out loud when he told me about the look on my face."
That can make it work if you put a talking device in the train and equip the memories it had when it was built.I got that from San Juan branch line series.
@@enoyrahman9851 love their videos
This is what made America great these engines and the people that make them and ran them 🚂
We need to make this happen again guys
Austin Rayner already did, Train Expo 2014. Just imagine Steamfest, but on a slightly smaller scale and without the 4449. 1225 had the honor of wearing 611s whistle that week
@@jerrysgardentractorsengine2243 we need another train Festival. Last year would have worked perfectly since it was the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's completion. Imagine if they brought Big Boy to that. Maybe they'll do one in 2029.
@@FutureRailProductions if someone pays for it then it will happen.
A more realistic one would be one wherein 765, 1225 and C&O Kanawha 2716 are together. Its essentially a reunion of three of the Van Sweringen railroad Berkshires.
imagine 2716 running in new england......then 765 and 1225
Two Lima sisters that have been reunited for the first time after an eighteen year separation. Keep up the great work guys!
This needs to continue, a new era where steam locomotives are being refernished and returned to the rails. Its so great to see these beautiful beasts back on the rails and in very good condition. The union Pacific needs to bring more steam locomotives back.
These two engines still make the best doubleheader ever seen!
Are there any plans for these two to meet up again in 5 years and maybe join with the C&O 2716 when restoration is done?
It’s triple-header time bois
I disagree. Big boy and 844
Wee can hope
@@kobyisreallyawesome8328 ain't they the same train? I forget already
Hi I have a question about these trains
That was 10 years ago? I was there. Holy crap how time slips by!
I'm jealous, 😁 .
Evelyn Chapel Ur not the only one
One of the greatest locomotives of all time.
I didn't even know 765 was gone! Glad to see the real-world Polar Express' sibling back on the line again! :D
We need more steamers back on the lines besides for excursions, we have the technology to make them run on
Other fuels besides wood, coal and oil
seatheous robloxian why would you want to make them anything but coal, oil or wood fired ? Once you add technology into the mix, the true personality of the steam loco goes out the window. Besides, all three are olentiful and always will be.
I agree that we should get more steam locomotives going again, they've restored the big boy in Wyoming and are putting it back into service outside of excursions, why not try and restore others back to working condition and get them moving again like the Virginians and Allegheny engines pulling coal over the Appalachians
ROTAXD I’m not saying to make them stop running on the traditional fuels, I’m saying, we can get them to run on natural gas, recycled oils or even make them run cleaner and better when using wood, coal and oil, that way, they would be able to stay on the line longer and would attract more people that are interested in other parts that might be interested in restoring other steamers to hopefully revive and create a new age of steam locomotives
@@lieffian Yeah because eventually we will run out of coal and oil. Wood comes from trees and trees get re planted!
This was something truly amazing that we shouldn’t let get away from us, please consider doing this again in 2019 or 2020!
All I can say is AWESOME! They need to get together again!
Thanks for 2:22. I thot I was the only one that teared up when I hear a steamer whistle. Maybe it only affects those of us who remember the 30's&40's and the trains of military supplies passing our homes and in front of us at crossings; and going to sleep at night with a far away whistle assuring us that all was OK with the world..
No , I'm a 60's baby and in the 70's my first train ride was a Steam Locomotive. It was just around Stone Mountain but that's where I fell in love with them . Listening to her chugging down the track and her whistle blowing was just awesome. I too had tears watching them together .
@@CryMeARiver63 Truthfully I had no idea the mystery and magic transcended that many decades. Good to hear.
you aint alone, I was not born till 80 but I still remember cabooses and the chessie systoms yellow, in our railroad town I grew up with enough exposure to people that worked for the railroad, and the steam era structures now all gone but one that is the museume and a few cabooses around town, and having known family members that were enginers on the b and o it was always on the back of mind for years growing up, then looking back and what we had when we were somebody makes me want to go back in time and push harder to save the remnants when we still had a chance to save them and use them to teach we were someone once upon a time, not just another small town but garrett was the last stop for steam on the b and o, the first common carrior railroad in the united states, and till 1926 had machine shops a blacksmith shop and carshops here, as well as a depot and roundhouse of 32 stalls, today we are just a set off yard, subdivision, and crew change point, well we do have a mantanance of way and a repair in place track but its not like it was, the depot is gone, the old oil house was taken down a few months before I got into trying to piece the old b and o layout togather from books and pictures, good news is the foundation of the oil house is still there for now, and the old coal bunker and smoke stack base from the old shops powerhouse is still there, it is mistaken that it was part of the roundhouse but it was the coal bunker for the powerhouse behind the fire station here, I did see one steamer though roll though a month before they took down the old depot, Milwaki road 261 I could not belive how tall it was and that was in 1996 that was the last time a steamer came though here on csx, now they wont let any steam on their lines though that seems to be softening a little with the help they gave the kentucky steam heritage corporation pulling 2716 , and us getting to cross csx under the trackage of the cvsr for steam in the valley though they have to pull us in with their diesel. all it would take though is a change in policy a ceo at csx to change the anti steam stance and it would be much more favorable.
Three years late to the conversation, but I’m exact same way. Born in 2002. My first train ride was also behind a steam locomotive. My parents brought me to see it when I was really young and I fell in love, and I’m still in love to this day. Now, at 20 years old I might get the opportunity this summer to learn how to operate the same locomotive that sparked my interest years ago.
Train Expo 2014 was my first exposure to these two lovely Berkshires! It is also the event that inspired me to volunteer for the Steam Railroading Institute!
This is so heartbreaking and then it repairs my heart. 1225 and 765 were separated, like two siblings succumbed to a divorce. Then as they got older, they encountered each other again. Then they left each other, only to be reunited once again. The way Steam Locomotives talk to each other via whistling, its as if they are screaming how much they missed each other.
Damn these 2 are beautiful. I just hope to see more steam running in British Columbia. Like we have a beautiful Royal Hudson that I want to see hit the tracks again
Can't wait for the reunion of N&W 475 and 611
It already happened since Augest-October 27, 2019.
These two locomotives are two outstandingly pieces of technical art. I really like them.
Greetings from Germany
Let's spend all day trying to get 15 seconds of awesome video of a diesel electric engine! Said nobody ever.
Nothing more beautiful than a Steam Locomotive...❤❤❤ . I watched the video of 765 being rerailed . Amazing watching the crew get her back on and running . Watch them both going down the line together brought tears to my eyes . Thank you for persevering these beauties.
Here's something I'd like to see:
Re-letter/number 1225 to that of a NKP engine, and then have it doublehead with 765 to Bellevue or Fostoria with some 40ft PS-1 boxcars in an attempt to recreate the NKP's Flying Saucer freight service.
Check out the vintage pick up at the crossing in 1:06. It's like two old friends greeting each other.
I love that puff and chug of the steam train
2020 reunion please!!!!
Awesome video!!! love steam trains.
The best locomotive reunion in history.
I couldn't agree more, Beau!
That was one of the coolest videos I've seen in a long time!! Definitely on my bucket list to see these two in person someday!
"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! Wunnerful video - the sight, sound, AND maybe someday via video, the "Schmell" of steamers!! Just had a "BIG BOY" Loco (4014) go through my state of Illinois - "AWESOME"!!! If it doesn't have sails, it's not a ship; If it doesn't have propellers, it's not a plane; If it doesn't have STEAM, it's NOT A LOCOMOTIVE!!! "Gesundheit" muchachos!
Facts that it still runs like a champion is awesome
Oh my gosh, do you remember watching that video all the time as a kid of the 765 and 1225 side by side?
Hot-Damn! That was Awesome
Absolutely Beautiful!!!!
The chuffing in tandem is pretty awesome. I wonder if that was intentional or if it just lined up
2:47 both of their whistles gave me chills
0:05 oh wow I can believe I’m going to see my big sis again.
1:33 nickel plate 765: BIG SIS! *WHISTLE* I CANT BELIEVE ITS YOU! I have some many stories I have to tell you.
1:37 pere Marquette 1225: yes yes I know but now we have to keep on hauling.
1:53 Nickel plate 765: hey wanna have a race
1:54 pere Marquette 1225: no no no we can’t
1:55 nickel plate 765: it will be fun!
1:56 pere Marquette 1225: ok just one
1:57 nickel plate 765: 3
1:58 nickel plate 765: 2

4:14 pere Marquette 1225: ok along as you do your part ok
4:16 nickel plate 765: okie dokie
I wish a steam train would come through talapossa GA because my daddy always saw a steam train when he was a kid and I wanted he to see one again because he has not sean one in years running.
Just realized this was 10 years ago....I'm old
To dream 3 Lima sisters together!
I Love It a Lot
Wow that is an awesome sight to see those two beautiful locomotives side-by-side that is definitely a historical site to see an excellent photo-op for all the enthusiast
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
1225&765 both legends of steam locomotive history
awesome video :) steam loco 765 and 1225 should run together again :)
Castle Rock RAIL FAN isn’t the 1225 the Polar Express
@@journeythroughtherails5294 Yes it is.
2 *Old brothers taking a stroll down the rails, feelings the wind between their wheels!*
So the two groups was at odds with each other, But the locomotives were excited to see each other then? That is how I interpreted what the guy said
This is just spurtaculer that twins are being rejoin after so long apart
for some reason i want to see every single steam locomotive in america in one line, all connected on the same track. that would be hilarious
Like • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
I hope that someday 1225, 765, & 2716 will all get together again weather at Ravenna, Owosso, or Headwater's Junction or Age of steam roundhouse that is a dream I have had since I can remember to see all three Berkshires from the three railroads famous for them back together only time will tell but I remain hopeful.
Always wondered what camera was used during the 2009 event, the footage is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!
It was largely filmed with one of the first JVC HD broadcast cameras and thanks!
@@fortwaynerailroad hi my husband wants to set up a appointment to get a foot plate experience once again on the 765 to run her on a few excursions and please give my husband a call at 5744012465
The berkshires locomotives always be beautiful
Oh, Heavens, Yes
that was great to see, I did not get there but had some friends who did. I have seen and rode with #765 since then and another friend went to Owosso in 2014 and got me autographed bear signed by engineer of #1225, I was sick and unable to make that trip either.
Nice video of history in the making ten years ago.
I wish rail roads would go back to some steam engines
It's great that these two Lima Superpower Berkshires got to see each other again after 18 years of being apart. May their paths cross again in the near future, maybe at another TrainFestival?
The Lima Legacy and with 765 and 1225 the watch still keeps time.
You forgot 4449!
I love when no diesel assist
Best part! 1:49
I Am In "American Steam Locomotive" Heaven Now
The 1225 & 765 Reunited.
The Berkshires are Back Together
I wish they would Doublehead Again.
Steam is on the rise again. It makes me cry like a man when they whistle.
Don't listen to a box car Willie song ! Lol
What secondary whistle did NKP 765 used in the 2009 photo freight service?
5 chime from B&LE 2-10-4 643
Made this so sad
765 and 1225 will reunite one day it's only a matter of time
meanwhile in australia we just wait for a locomotive to come along from another country so we get to see your locomotives or like the flying scotsman because we have good locomotives here you just have to see and also this is really beautiful
#2716 will soon join them!
Run a excursion with cars like wisconsin valley lake pepin super dome Milwaukee Grand Canyon all NS passenger train cars and Pullman rail cars
y'know.....the polar express is the main reason 1225 is so well known now a days....I wonder what would've happened if the 765 was chosen instead?
765, 844, 1225, 4449, 4014, and 3985 all need to get together to do a steam fest it needs to happen!!
The very definition of cool.
Nice
Hey cvsr 2020?
Wish they could do this again
Do you know what be cool? 765 and the 587 double heading and running side-by-side!
So what you're telling me is that the 765 steam locomotive is a cousin of The polar Express because the polar Express is 1225
Yeah... 765 is a bit more powerful and she waw built 3 years after 1225
Awesome power
2:31 wait..
so they met up..
and had their whistle blowing
but in that scene...
4449 was noticed in the distance
is that 4449 or its acctually a sister engine?
im not sure.
Steam engines are so powerful they don't need extra engines for freight trains
So that means, steam engines are strong and diesels are weak
kid named tractive effort:
And they did
i so happy :D:D:D:D
choo choo!
Chugga chugga chugga chugga
My question is when 765 and 1225 meet 4014
How old is 765 now in 2019
steam is getting back in the century in england they gonna build new wons
Why does the 1st shot look like a nature documentary?

I Wanna Save A Steam Engine When I Grow Up, But I Need Lots Of Money
To bad 2716 was built by alco instead of Lima. Then it would of been dubbed the big 3 of lima
heh yea I know right
It would have been really cool if the 4449 triple headed an Excursion with the NKP 765 and PM 1225
It sure would! Throw in the SP&S 700 too!
I recognise the narrator but I forget his name
At 0:39 there are two whistles?
These two beauties look like the polar express
Any chance this is gonna happen again?
Make a tripleheader with 765, 1225 and 2716 really possible!!!!
