Thanks for showing how to replace the belts with all the close ups. The instructions are very clear and show all the details. It made it very easy to follow and to do on our BMW.
Quick tip: Do make a photo of the big belt before you remove it so you know how it goes round all them rolls... especially when you got a friend over to chat. It is then way easier to recall how it was put on... trust me. And don't ask me how I got this idea :D
Thanks for sharing! Very clear and to the point. Just as an FYI, the hex socket you use (3:43) to take off the serpentine belt doesn't work on my 2002 325i. I believe a T50 is needed.
my serpentine belt needs to be changed due to wear....do I have to change any of the rest of the belts or pulleys...I went to Firestone they jus said the serpentine
Hello everyone. To clarify some things in the comments below a hex and a Torx bit can both work in the same fastener but one will usually strip out the other. They both have the same hexagonal shape when you look at them closely. But as always try to use the correct tool for the correct job and you won't destroy the fastener another word stripping the whole the tool goes in. I do believe originally there all torx bits but not sure what size goes where as the one on my car is also stripped I could be wrong but I've seen it more times than not. Happy wrenching
Thanks, I found the Top aux belt tensioner is easier with a 16mm socket at the left side rather than a t50 in the centre. Also I believe the fan removal applies to manual cars only. I did my auto 330 petrol e46 today and the fan is bolted to the water pump. Required a 32mm open spanner and a whack clockwise to release. There is a recommended tool to hold the shroud in order to loosen the nut but a sharp whack to the spanner did the trick. Re assembled same method.
This is true, manual e46s have the single eletrical fan, if you have an automatic it's a good idea to do the double fan delete and use the same fan manuals come with. Less chance of having the blades destroy your engine bay, and you never have to deal with taking that fan blade on/off again
great tutorial, everything was apt l spot on, only thing I didn't have to do was loosen the ac tensioner, but i'm working 2002 so maybe just a little difference in the years
Thanks for the video. In the video I see there is enough room for you to put the entire arm in when removing the AC belt. Since there is so much room after removing the fan. I am wondering if it is really necessary to remove the bottom cover of the car for this job? I am comfortable to do everything you described in the video except I don't have a safe way to lift the car to remove the bottom cover. I love to do this myself. But if the bottom cover needs to be taken off, I guess I must send the car to the dealer. Please advise.
oh thanks for that video , I got into that job. it is much easier when looked before job what has happened fantastic water pump pulley has cracked and has damaged all around,
+Smoke187 Both torx & hex are needed. The tensioner for the large belt loosens via the hex screw. The tensioner for the smaller belt is loosened with a T60 torx.

Mine is 8mm, not the T50. Mine is 2005 325i, guess different years using different tools.
Man, that is some seriously efficient design!!
wow, you do a phenomenal job training others.. thank you for your efforts.
My 2003 330 does not have an electric fan so it’s kind of different … more difficult to remove.
my serpentine belt needs to be changed due to wear....do I have to change any of the rest of the belts or pulleys...I went to Firestone they jus said the serpentine
thanks , eventually a video that actually makes it clear how to do it .
Great vid helped so so much thank you
Very useful video, Thank you!
Thanks alot, video really helped me out, so thumbs up from me even tho i only got a 316 xD
I notice on a lot of videos they always replace the pulleys is this necessary? Thanks!
Basically, it's such a pain to get in there, and the tensioner pulley goes bad anyway, so you might as well replace it!! 2 birds with 1 stone.
Please can you advice how to remove housing and air plastic cover 2004 BMW Z4 2.5i . I think my BMW Z4 is a E85

Leland Dionisio if you see any sort of cracks in it (especially around the bolting area), you know it's time for a replace
Those this helps the car run better aswell?
Thanks so much. This help me a lot.
Great video man!
hello, what is the number of torks to loosen tensioner belt? end to remove the tensioner belt?
+angus7766
he said T60... but i think it should be T50
ok thanks!
+Smoke187 My E46 tensioner has a T60 just as mentions in this video
+Jim Vitek My E46 don´t even has a torx screw there... it has a hex screw ;-)
+Smoke187 Both torx & hex are needed. The tensioner for the large belt loosens via the hex screw. The tensioner for the smaller belt is loosened with a T60 torx.
Thanks you.
