Well, it's finally time to say goodbye to the Blue Angel (After 15 years!) The new amp is seriously Amazing - Hopefully I get as many years out of this as I did that :) Tones start at 9:20 Enjoy! Amp: imp.i114863.net/Na1gV
WOW! Never thought I'd ever see an amp with everything I'd want. This would be it. Gotta try one out at L &M. Its perfect for your channel Darryl! Hey that rhymes! :)
hi Darrell, now that the blue angel is in retirement, it will need a retirement home, I put my hand up mate, I would give her a nice home and play her often and take her for walks etc lol
From the clean to the distorted, the amp definitely gives off a taste of everything for all kinds of possibilities! Cheers and congrats on the acquirement, especially after that long!
I've been using a H&K Tubemeister 18 for a year now . It does not have onboard effects or preset storage but it has the built in DI Redbox and power soak features. I love it. Clean tones and lead tones are superb. I tend to play with as low an onstage volume as possible and use my amp, speaker as my monitor, and leave it to the house PA to mix my DI sound. I recently blew one of the EL 84 power tubes in rehearsal before a big show. This gave me a huge appreciation for their TSC circuitry that diagnoses faulty tubes and prevents more serious problems. The amp was fine, and replacing the tube (with the invaluable help of RUclips) was a 15 minute job. Big fan of H&K!
I have yet to see/hear a demo of what this amp sounds like with the lower wattage settings. Since so many of us practice in our bedroom or livingroom, I am especially interested in this feature.
It sounds the same. The amp is remarkably consistent, at least with distorted sounds, across volume and wattage sittings. It does break up earlier on clean sounds at lower wattages, as you would expect.
At 20 watts the sound is the same because simply 2 tubes of four are kept off. At 10 watts the power soak is used and so for the rest, however the sound quality doesn’t decrease at all. I tried it
I literally have mine set at 1W when I practice and it's amazing, As another person stated, "remarkably consistent". You don't need a huge amount of power to get great tone with this one
This amp is my gig rig amp. It is amazing, sounds amazing, covers every sound you can dream of, doesn’t break your back and sounds killer. Great choice Darrell.
I have a H & K 18 and was initially disappointed but when I learnt to drive it hard (high volume and gain) it comes alive. Great choice Darryl, and as always a great review. I wish I could afford one of those new ones.
So happy for you man! I just bought the Tubemeister 18 on black friday, tried it at Long & McQuade and just loved the sound. The power soak was a must in my small appartment. I had read nothing but good reviews about their whole lineup. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Was thinking of going for the Traynor DHX212 cab with it even though the 212 from H&K I was playing through was also quite enjoyable.
I’m a tradition it’s and a fender twin reverb or 59 bassman is the best but when I played one of these I really dig it and I don’t like modern stuff most of the time
I love my TM40!! I have a Splawn Quickrod 100...an EVH 5150 iii Stealth and the TM40 Deluxe and the TM40 is my favorite of the three! It's sounds so good and even though it doesn't have the built in effects like the GM40 and some of the other bells, it still does have the core tone and that's what counts for me! Great amps!!!
Welcome to the Hughes and Kettner club! I've been playing with one for about 5 years and love it. I've got a Tubemeister 18 and it does everything I need. In fact, I sold my old Laney VC 30 to buy the H&K
More than impressed!. Never ceases to amaze me how modern amps and general music equipment has progressed in such a short space of time. So much easier to be a musician these days. Kinda makes you want to turn back the clock and learn all over again with the gear available now. Imagine how good we'd be. I envy any new starter now. No need for all the difficulties we had with the crap stuff we had to endure as kids trying to learn with poor quality guitars and over priced rubbish amps.
Amazing! Enjoy Darrell! For anyone looking for almost the same feature set in a cheaper non-tube design, lots of feature overlap with the boss katana head, which also has an integrated speaker.
Hey Darrell! It's the best demo of this amp on RUclips. Other demos turned me off from even considering this amp for buying. You showed that it in every way is great in real life as on paper. Thanks!
Good job brother, I bought this literally 2 weeks ago and love it. Every channel is useful and sounds awesome. Don't care that it was made in china or wherever, it sounds amazing.
The Bugera 333xl has a built in noise gate but its really just for amp hum it literally does not work for anything more. But the Bugera also has an auto bias feature allowing you to change from 6l6 to el 34's without doing anything. I tested this amp before I bought the Bugera and in the end the price difference is what sold me on the Bugera. I love the Hughes though it sounded fantastic.
CONGRATS!! H&K make very good Amps, nice choice. Will enjoy for many years. Always liked the look too the blue neon name and see through front just scream "Hell Ya"! New amp day is always terrific! Don't play live anymore, simply play for the Love of it at home. Sold all my big amps and went Little. Pickup up a 57 Champ. Funny is, that old tech still sounds amazing, honest.
Nice grab! I had the original grandmeister 36. I *wish* I liked the sound of it (personal taste) because I absolutely loved everything else about the amp. It came out 6 years ago and other tube amp companies (e.g. Revv G20) are only just now starting to even come close to the feature set of the grandmeister.
Great amp and congrats Sir. Myself, I tend to keep it simple. This philosophy also requires myself to have many different amplifiers. The only issue I see with amplifiers like these (very complicated) is that they can't possibly hold up as well as a simple PTP amp. I purchased a brand new Fender Twin Reverb back in 1976. All these years later I am still using that amplifier. Dropped, Rain/Snow, Years of abuse and with normal maintenance she is actually sounding better than the day I brought her home from the store. We are all different and have different needs, so this is indeed very cool, again congrats Sir. Myself, I'll keep it simple.
Hi Darrell, big fan! No pressure or anything, but there's a man with a pistol pointed at my head, and he says that if you don't stop saying 'reverb' in such a stupid way, he's g
Sounds like a modeling amp to me. Marshall metal style digital. I guess that's why there are so many different amp tones. I didnt hear one thing as far as tone I liked, but I'm accustomed to my jtm 45, ac30hw and my pro reverb loaded with black plates.
I guess I’m just not a Gain type of player, love to see new products. My sound is more bell clean like my 59 Bassman or if I want other tones l use my 64 custom deluxe. No chugging here, more Stones or Neil tones. I think I’d play with it more than play it. Can’t wait to hear what you do with it.
Absolutely glad to hear your new tone choices, my ear was beginning to be tired of the old one, the multi sound options will help greatly sounds awesome.
I bought one 5 years ago and still makes me smile. A musician will understand what i mean. Tons of everything to mess with especially for doing computer recording. Will i ever get rid of my 2 Marshall jcm 800 heads i bought in 1984? Not a chance
Tube amps with noise gate: there are quite a few, although many high gain amps that "ought to" have a built-in gate, do not. Some I found in a quick search: Peavey Invective (but not the 5150; thought it had one but guess not). Revv. Engl. Driftwood. I'm sure there are others...
I have the baby bro of this amp the classic Tubemeister 18. Killer range of amps. I’ll miss the Blue Angel, gave your channel, that sound! Time to find a new one. Enjoy the discovery
Very nice amp... congratulations and I'm looking forward to hearing this baby in many many videos to come. I play in a band with an all silent in-ear setup and thus through a modeling amp / multi fx straight to the board, but this thing meets all my demands. Seems like I need to start saving some money...
Thats a lot of awesome amp for $1500, everything you will ever need. I was expecting it to cost more actually till I looked it up. It looks like your really enjoying it in this video. Thanks for the review Darrell!
Great amp choice Darrell. I've got one and it is everything but the kitchen sink in a tiny lightweight package. Check out the H&K Black Spirit 200 as well-a solid state 200w amp with all the features of the Deluxe 40 without the danger of blown tubes. I have both and I record with the Deluxe40 and gig with the Black Spirit.
Hey Darrell this makes two amps you've influenced me to buy. I'm still enjoying the Stage Right SB20 plugged into their 2X12 ( 2 V30's }. I remember watching this video a year or so ago and thinking I'd really like to have one of those until I saw the price was a bit out of my range. Well I just found and purchased a used Grandmeister 36 with MIDI footswitch for less than half what they sell for new. Putting my trust in Andertons Music that will deliver second hand amp in good working order. Can't wait for it to arrive all the way from the UK. Really appreciate all yourr informative videos.Hoping to see more of the Nerdy technical stuff deep dive stuff in the future... Thanks again!
That is a nice amp. Always loved the blue light in there. Like the tone and all the features included. Plus the fact that you don't have to use a cabinet would be a great option for my personal need. Thanks for sharing this. Cant wait to hear more. Bye Bye Blue Angel!!!
Darrell, I just got mine today! Can't wait to figure it all out. Gonna take a while. How about a comparo with different power tubes. I'm thinking you should replace the knobs with the blue ones off your SuperStrat.
Take your time, it took me a year to appreciate mine, haven't changed the tubes yet, but it sounds good enough already, and with some of my pedals, the thing has very percussive sounds that other amps cannot get because they just don't sound cold enough which is a tube thing though. I mean I play with medium output pickups and I djent and chug.
I used to own one of these! I felt the clean tone was too quiet when I had it and that the lead tone was a bit dead. The crunch channel gunned with the boost engaged was all the gain I could ever need and was KILLER. I originally ran it into an orange 4x12 cab, but downsized to the 1x12 matching Hughes and kettner cabinet. That cabinet had something special. It was so spanky!! I do think that the power soak actually affected the tone of the amp quite a bit, but that was just me. I really wish I didn't have to sell it. It was a great amp.
I'm hearing some things you've done that change the sound like cabinet swap etc. I'm not happy with the heavy tones in the 1watt power soak position. Do you have any suggestions beyond your comment?
Very nice review Darrell... Super impressed with the tones + features of the H&K Amp. Hope the Blue Angel is going to a good home. I think you should run a world-wide competition to give it away :)
Peavey Infective has a noise gate and a boost built in! This amp looks great though H&K always do. I’d still prefer the Infective though for the chooga choogas.
Thank you DARRELL! Please talk about the LED tube monitoring system on the back. I have this amp and with less than six hours use was getting sound cutting out. Was confused, til I checked the lights. Bad tube. Manual shows how to read them. I believe the shipping carrier bounced mine around, or a manufacturing flaw. Swapped tubes. The 2 ELL 84’s, I replaced as a set for bias and balance and all good. I know was still under warranty, but didn’t trust it bouncing around during shipping.👍🤘🎸🤘
Don't know if it's really the most advanced but probably the nicest to look at with its clear lexan blue l.e.d. lighted front plate , but somewhere with all this programmability there must be some small pcb with transistor and IC's hidden what would be fun it's to see the inner like taking the chassis to see the quality of the construction !
Or Bi - amped rig. Call it what you want. I finally get the tones I hear in my head, and that’s with two separate pedal boards! One per amp. They both are MXR-Dunlop based,I may have to refigure that out, but it’s always nice to have two of each pedal, just in case. Main point is, those two amps sound amazing together!
It seems that my ears must have known that you had alread used this amp because when you played through this smp for the intro I thought it sounded exactly like I had heard you sound before. sweet amp, good luck with it.
This video makes me remember when I bought my H&K 100W some twentyfive years ago. At every gig I had to fight with sound guys to have it connected through the back instead of using a mic: it just sounded better most of the time! Great amps up to the TriAmp. And I still have it.
I hear ya! I'm a true gear nerd. I currently own 14 guitars, bought and sold another 15 or so in the past 20 years, owned almost 10 bass amps, a bunch of pedals... But when I bought my Triamp in 2006, I never looked back. It's still right next to me as I'm typing this, I never thought of replacing it, always used it at home, at rehearsals, gigs, recordings,... I did order an H&K Tubemaster 40 Deluxe yesterday, since I'd like to leave the Triamp in the rehearsal room. The Tubemaster and Grandmaster seem like the perfect home(recording) amps. Especially since I heard that the Tubemaster's preamp section is based on the Triamp.
Very nice and I'm considering one of these but my concern is I've heard they get hot enough on the left top side to cook an egg. I'd like to hear your thoughts. The other concern is it is not all tubes as there are some electronics but ultimately the sound and features are worth the process.
I got one a while back - great recording and cover band amp. Takes pedals well. You have to become a knob turner, but, you can find tons of great tones with this amp. The big foot switch is a must.
I've got a 65 fender original not reboot, a mustang 4 and a beringer acoustic amp. Been wanting to get a low wattage head and stack combo just for the fun of knocking around a few tunes.
I have a used H&K switchblade Combo as a practice amp. It's is really heavy (full tube amp). 3/4 of the channels Sound amazing, but I haven't got a great Sound out of the lead channel. It sounds too thin. I can store 128 Presets - which means that for a clean gig I could have 4 different clean sounds stored on bank 1 Sound 1-4. Or no clean Sound on another bank - activating/deactivating FX chan is storable too (but no footswitch for that). For 300 E second Hand it was an amazing deal. I have been a marshall Player all my life - except the one Engl preamp I occasionly use. But the clean sounds of H&K switchblade absolutely rock!
Well, it's finally time to say goodbye to the Blue Angel (After 15 years!)
The new amp is seriously Amazing - Hopefully I get as many years out of this as I did that :)
Tones start at 9:20 Enjoy!

Congrats Darrell nice amp :)
Very nice amp D.B. May I ask where you picked yours up with the foot switch included?
I can't believe you traded a Mesa for a H&K!!!
Love the feature set and sounds, and to top it all off, it's not too pricy either, hmmmm..I'll have to put it on my radar. Grats Darrell!
hi Darrell, now that the blue angel is in retirement, it will need a retirement home, I put my hand up mate, I would give her a nice home and play her often and take her for walks etc lol
OOO!!! I second that. I'll even come pick it up:)
I 3rd! I'll pay shipping!
I think that she would preferred her retirement time with sand see and son in Thailand. Ha ha ha
Blue Angel 21 gun salute. The end of an era.
What is the "Blue Angel"? I keep hearing him refer to it but can't find a video about it!
@@Tricknologyinc It was a Mesa Boogie combo that he played for many years. You can see it in older videos when he shows his mic setup.
@@BinauralBacker If you can recall a title, or throw a link would be great. If it's a hassle, don't sweat it! Thanks!
From the clean to the distorted, the amp definitely gives off a taste of everything for all kinds of possibilities! Cheers and congrats on the acquirement, especially after that long!
Why are you everywhere ?
What was the Black Spirit? An HK Katana?

So happy for you Darrell! I just got my first tube amp a few months ago and the tone is like butter! Hughes and kettner is a great brand!
Sounds Excellent ! Thanks Daryll, I just found my son's Xmas present !
Can I be your son?
Me too?
I love Hughes and Kettner, when you play one in person they make everything sound so good.
Thanks Darrell , I don’t play but have loved Listening to music from 70 to present day . It’s educated me and given me great insight into your world.
I recently played through a Tubemeister set to 1 watt, and I was pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to trying this one out.
Congrats Darrell, well deserved. Sure is purdy.
Wow, it's so versatile! The inclusion of the cabinet simulation and the noise gate really stands out!
I have a H & K 18 and was initially disappointed but when I learnt to drive it hard (high volume and gain) it comes alive. Great choice Darryl, and as always a great review. I wish I could afford one of those new ones.

I got one about a year ago and really like it. Good choice.
I've always loved H&K's sound pallet... Your brief sound check just proves H&K has another winner...!!!
Hey Darrell! It's the best demo of this amp on RUclips. Other demos turned me off from even considering this amp for buying. You showed that it in every way is great in real life as on paper. Thanks!
Very very nice. Well deserved congrats. Love love love that STORE button.
Good job brother, I bought this literally 2 weeks ago and love it. Every channel is useful and sounds awesome. Don't care that it was made in china or wherever, it sounds amazing.

Wow. Thanks for this. I think I'm going to pull the trigger, based on your detail!
Happy to see H&K is getting some more recognition. Awesome amp and very flexible. Steve Stine is a H&K player too.
Hughes&Kettnner has been my amp choice since late '80's. they are truly something else.
Great Video Darrell.
This was very helpful since I would have never know this AMP existed.
Thanks Again
Absolutely glad to hear your new tone choices, my ear was beginning to be tired of the old one, the multi sound options will help greatly sounds awesome.
Congratulations! l LOVE this amp. Wanted it so bad, but it's out of my justifiable price range (and need) right now. Really happy for you.
How about the Black Spirit 200?
Borgør I’ll check it out. Thanks.
I bought one 5 years ago and still makes me smile. A musician will understand what i mean. Tons of everything to mess with especially for doing computer recording. Will i ever get rid of my 2 Marshall jcm 800 heads i bought in 1984? Not a chance

I have one of these amps. The most important thing about this amp is it's versatility on a stage environment. It covers a lot of ground.
Have never seen you smile so big or often!!! Glad you like it!
Hello Darrell! Thank you for sharing this video, congratulations on your new amp. It really is amazing! I truly enjoyed the demo!
Revv’s like “ hold my beer” 😂
Chug chug chug

Wow! Is the only sane thing I can say! Nicely done Darrell. Great review! :) :)
Congrats on the new amp. I have the Deluxe 20. My next H&K will probably be the Black Spirit. Yours sounds so versatile.
This Amp and the Peavey invictive amp is too freaken awesome..love those amps.
Thank you for supporting a company of a small german town. The workers need it!
Love the Hughes and Kettner brand! I love my Tubemeister 5 and have my eye on their Tubemeister 20.
Killer rig I've had my eye on their stuff for years. Happy for ya enjoy
Hughes and Kettner is by far my favorite
Just got a used TM 36, with foot controller, snd set it up in a stereo rig with my PRS MT 15! UNREAL!!!! I’ve found the tone I’m looking for!
I got one a while back - great recording and cover band amp. Takes pedals well. You have to become a knob turner, but, you can find tons of great tones with this amp. The big foot switch is a must.
I like the Orange Rocker reverb 50 you showcased. Sat and overtones were so much fuller. But for super clean stuff this amp sounds great.
You can sure tell you love this amp. I have an Orange Rocker 15, and a Revv D20. Maybe I’ll add this, or sell of of them
Love Hughes and Kettner amps! Had the mk2 Alex triamp and now have the mk3! Absolutely amazing!
I've got a 65 fender original not reboot, a mustang 4 and a beringer acoustic amp. Been wanting to get a low wattage head and stack combo just for the fun of knocking around a few tunes.
1W!!! I definitely need that for my Mesa mark 5 :25, the 10W is way too loud for me
The Black Spirit 200 is essentially the solid state variant of this m
amp.
But the clean sounds of H&K switchblade absolutely rock!
wow man im gonna miss the "and of course we are using the blue angel mic'ed up with the Senheiser"
What kind of cable is on the other end of the xlr that plugs into a PC? A usb? thanks
Great choice Darrell.👍 My wishlist amp.😍
I've always liked the H & K clean sound, but not so much the dirt.
Congrats and nice upgrade Darrell.
Love the H&K stuff!
