I watched this after getting off work today.
I thought carving in retirement was going to be relaxing. Watching someone else carve is really relaxing (and educational). Thanks, Doug.

Hey Doug, really learnt alot from you over the years. I'm getting really good at carving different viking men out of birch, white poplar and pine. I live down a old dirt road with no neighbors. When winters are terrible, I stoke the stove and sit back and carve. So relaxing.

IDK how to say thanks but I definitely owe you one. In June my wife got me a set of Hutsel knives for my
B-day. my family remembered me saying you can never go wrong with a knife for a gift. I was thinking more like hunting, fishing, or camping, so when I saw that funky looking curved knife thing I wasn’t sure what to think. After some research I figured out it was a “spoon carving set”. But from that day on I’ve been on a tare and most of what I’ve learned about it is because of your channel! I wish I could send you a pic of where I started and where I’m at now thanks to you. I still suck but I definitely suck less! 👍🏼😂. So for all the free lessons & inspiration I just want to say thank you and God Bless.

Thank you very much for sharing your talent with us! Back in the day, I used to carve a ton of these compact characters, and after some time, I began carving their heads/faces on the corner, so that they had their heads turned to one side or the other. This gives the character a bit of a more dynamic appearance, versus keeping their heads looking straight. I also had their eyes looking left or right - also to add more action, versus a rather static appearance. Great tutorials, Doug! Keep up the fantastic work!

I just ordered my very 1st set of whittling/carving tools and some basswood after I saw your first video. I'm 53 and love working with my hands, so I'm going to give it a try. I already tried the old wizard on a pencil after I received my Culiau engraving pen and it turned out great, so you've given me so much inspiration... Love you and your creations

Thank you for sharing your talent. Seeing it's fall I did a bunch of your pumpkins with the faces. Went to my Sunday morning diner and gave some of them out to some of the regulars. Seeing the smiles on their faces was worth all the cuts and swearing. You've inspired a lot of us. I was an ornamental blacksmith for fifty years. It's a lot easier caring a couple of knives around when we go camping than a forge and anvil.

I always love these little carves but I NEVER am able to get Basswood as soft as what you carve! I usually have to rough out as much as possible with a band saw first. I think my Basswood source is actually a walnut factory!

I never thought I would be stuck watching a tutorial video on carving a little man out of wood, and it cost me around $150. But you know what? It did, because I got inspired and I ended up purchasing some basswood and a complete carving kit.. lol But as much fun as you make this all look, I'm super happy to get started... Now after my wife calms down a bit about my purchases, I'll be buying some water based paint as well!! 😜

I recently discovered your channel. My father recently passed away. He was a woodcarver all his life. He carved everything from little figures to full size carousel horses. Unfortunately, I did not inherit any of his talent. I did get all his knives and tools. Your video about carving the wizard popped up on my timeline. I have always enjoyed those type of carvings. After watching it, I am going to give it a go as soon as I can pick up some wood. I think my dad would like that. What I really need to do is learn how to sharpen a knife. Keep up the great videos.

Hi Doug. I don't want to be a pain in the butt, but have you ever thought about during a tutorial just on realistic eyes and noses? You do a little treatment on eyes in your "Carve a Little Lumberjack" tutorial, but I know, I for one, would benefit tremendously from you showing us how you do those beautiful eyes and noses on some of your carvings. Thank you for all your tutorials, they are fantastic, and have helped me become a decent novice woodcarver in a very short period of time. It's a very relaxing past time for sure, and I'm enjoying it tremendously thanks in no small part to your tutorial videos. Best Regards, Pete Ignelzi
