Lin-Manuel wrote this song for his older sister. He talked about one Christmas where their parents woke her up early to put together his He-Man playset so he'd be able to play with it when he woke up

You're not alone! I cried when I first heard this song and cried many more times afterwards. This song perfectly captures all of the stresses and worries of being in this position within a family and community, and I don't I've ever heard a song that reflects my feelings so perfectly. This movie is amazing and I'm happy more people are talking about it!

i was watching with my mom and i was trying my best to not cry but i still did😭
As the eldest, the one who put my dreams to the side so my little brothers could go out into the world and be great, who took the safe choices so that I could take care of my parents when they were sick, who handled everything so they wouldn't have to, this song makes me sad, angry, so many different feelings. Who said this was my job? What could I have been if I didn't have all this pressure? Your reaction definitely spoke to my feelings.

I see you. I feel the same. I didn't choose to be born first. I didn't want to be thrusted into this position where everything I do has to be for the good of the family while my younger sibling could live free of the expectations because, why shouldn't they? They have me, right? In the eyes of the family, I'm Plan A, while they're Plan B or C. No one ever asks if we want this but we have to suck it up and do it anyway.
I feel you 100%. I'm not even the oldest, I'm the youngest and ever since the day I was able to walk myself to school I became the one. My sister, the middle child, calls me "the fixer". I take care of my mom with dementia and early onset alzheimers. I didn't go to school so I could help my grandmother when my grandfather was dealing with her dementia. I saw Luisa's face and it made me angry and when she sings about just getting through it all to try to find relaxation or peace...I cried because I tell myself "If we can just get through this...then things will lighten up..." and it. never. does. Sorry to go on and on but I'm glad you've enjoyed the music to this movie!

This is so relatable, even to someone who isn't the oldest. I'm actually the youngest in my family, the only one left at home, trying to take care of my grandma, keep the house clean, and study all at once. Every time I hear this song, I have to fight tears.

I cried when I heard this song too. I'm the oldest of 9 and my middle sister recommended the song to me, telling me that she thought of me when she heard it. It brought up so many emotions in me.

@@TP0M Admittedly, my parents don't expect me to do a LOT of heavy lifting; only a little.
This is partially due to some small learning disabilities I have. But regardless, when it comes to keeping the peace at home or keeping everyone's emotional spirits high; THAT duty often falls on ME

I just watched this movie yesterday and this was my favorite song! It’s such a middle child anthem, I relate to it so much.
Ah, they gave it to the middle child in the movie, but this song was written for Lin Manuel's oldest sister.

I am the older brother by about 10 years. Abusive Mother, Absent Father. I was the Dad. Taught him how to read, made lunch for school, changed diapers on and on..... this song destroyed me.😥Worst of all it wasn't my brother's fault.... he went on to be very successful.... I am a mess.

Middle child but I swear treated like the one who people believe I can handle it all and I do I good job making them think that! But I’m tired nobody helps me when I need it but if they need it it’s easy!

I’m not the oldest out my 2 other siblings, but I understand the anxiety and pressure of trying to be like my brother and sister because I compare myself with all my relatives and even people in my life. Also just the pressure and anxieties of life.
I could put on a Perfect Show for my family. I could play the part of Mr. Right 24/7 and get away with it.
But I know my family knows me better than that, so I let myself fail when its appropriate. My failures teach my younger brother and sister even someone with a mind such as mine, even with a body like mine, even with the mentality I display and even with the face I wear for the majority, I am still able to fail. I still taste the dirt after a fall from time to time. I still need help.
And when my youngers come to my aide, I know the job isnt done, so I let them take the lead when I know it will matter.
They WILL be better than me. I take that weight with a smile.

it's odd, that i didn't cry at this as the eldest sibling but my baby sister DID. she's been under so much pressure the last two years and has suffered so much that when this song hit, I haven't seen her fall that hard for a disney song EVER. movies don't make her cry, but Encanto sure did. i cried too, but mostly cuz i realized i'm our family's Bruno lmao
