It is twenty-thousand years ago. The Earth is a wondrous, prehistoric world filled with danger, not the least of which is the beginning of the Ice Age. To avoid a really bad frostbite, the planet's majestic creatures - and a few small, slothful ones - begin migrating south. The exceptions are a woolly mammoth named Manfred, and a terminally lazy sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo). When Sid "adopts" Manfred (Ray Romano) as his protector, the mammoth tries everything he can to unload his newfound baggage. But that's only the beginning of his frustrations: Manny has been roped by Sid into helping reunite an abandoned human baby named Roshan (Goran Visnjic) with his family. They are joined by Diego (Denis Leary), a sinister saber-toothed tiger who befriends Sid and Manny, all the while seeing the infant as a tasty treat. As Sid, Manny and Diego make their way across the vast, ice-covered landscape, another creature, a prehistoric squirrel/rat known as Scrat, tries desperately to carry out his mission in life - to bury an acorn - which, alas, triggers calamitous events.

So originally, Diego was supposed to die, but after screening the movie, the writers saw that everyone complained it was too sad, so they decided to let him live. I'm so glad they did because he's one of my favorite characters in the franchise.
Honestly if they killed Diego in this movie, I wouldn't even bother watching the other movies

I think they made it so the humans don’t talk to show us how disconected to the animals humans are. We talk in our own way and animals talk in their way. Both are equally intelligent and emotional but not understanding each other.
9:48 yeah it’s always so fascinating to me what mothers are willing to do to save their child. If she didn’t protect the child while in the water she could have survived, and yet she saved him even though she knew that if she would left him there, he would not be able to survive without help. But she sacrificed her life just to give her child few more moments to live. It’s beautiful
Most people will say to only watch the first 3, but honestly the fourth movie is amazing and I think you would like it. It involves family bonds and stuff and I know you cherish topics like that. I can't get any deeper into why you would like it without getting into spoiler territory so that's all I'll say for now!

During the Ice Age, there was a giant land bridge of ice connecting Eurasia to the Americas. Millions of animals and humans crossed it. For example, camels originally came from America and migrated to Africa and the middle east. Ours went extinct.
Sid the sloth, is voiced by John Leguizamo. The same guy that voiced Bruno from Encanto.
Now, you've got to check out the rest of Blue Sky's library. There's some really underrated gems in there. _Robots, Rio,_ and _The Peanuts Movie_ come to mind.
I love Rio, such a fun movie.

6:17 so here’s the thing about woolly mammoth cloning is it can be complicated such as for example Asian elephants are currently an endangered species but they are close relatives of mammoths and crispr (genetic editing), an elephant’s gestation period is literally two years. The only option is to use artificial embryos but only can create mammophants (hybrids between elephants and mammoths) but the only way get a complete mammoth is by a fourth generation.
My concern is, *should* we even try cloning one in the first place? If we brought mammoths back, especially woollies, where would we even let them live? They were adapted for cold climates, and the earth is a lot warmer overall than it was thousands of years ago.

Plus it's too hot for them to survive, that's why they went extinct in the first place.
The actor that voiced Sid also voiced Bruno in Encanto. That may be why he sounds familiar.

I really love Blue Sky's Ice Age (2002)!
It's one of my favorite childhood animated movie franchises!
35:35 we can speculate. All the tigers we saw where adults of hunting age and voiced by males. Suggesting that the humans killed all the females and kids. Diego never hinted at having a mate, so "half our pack" would suggest about 3 females and a couple kids.
I'm unsure if the creator was suggesting the humans stupid and unknowing of other animals genders or just that cruel to attack the tigers cub cave when the hunter tigers were away.
I'd say to watch them all for completion's sake, but take a break between 3 and 4. 4 still has some good elements in it.

Fun fact, Zeke, the smaller of the sabers in the pack, seemed to be a Smilodon gracilis rather than a Smilodon fatalis, unlike Soto, Diego and Oscar, because of his lower size and of his longer ears and saber-teeth.

first 4, ice age continental drift was the last actual good one. the one that came out after that was kinda bad, it tried to relate to more current/present day humour which was kinda odd

I know many people dislike the baby character or the way he looked. But I always found him adorable.
He’s one of the least annoying baby characters in a movie(meaning he’s not annoying at all), didn’t even know people disliked him.

Native From Canada Alberta Kinuso. The way we used to hunt is you get a spear and you chase your kill on a horse off a hill side or off a mountain side . So basically you would Corner them to spear at your kill and if they don’t want to be killed by you they jump off the cliff and kill them selfs . Or basically what what happened in manny’s flashback I forgot about that scene 🧡😶🌫️👌
Somewhere, wicked binge discovered Soto became the way he is after seeing his wife and cubs get killed, making him very similar to Manny. Only difference is that Soto took his grudge to another level.
This is the first movie I was ever introduced to in my entire life. I have fond memories of it, and it still holds up.
Concerning bringing mammoths back, I'm sure it will be possible. Though they wouldn't be full blooded mammoths, but mammoth/elephant hybrids due to the amount of mammoth DNA that already decomposed. The only problem is that life now is much different than it was before, and just about the only good thing that would come from their de-extinction would that the condors (basically big vultures) today would be able to eat as good as their ancestors.
Technically it wouldn't be the only thing. Many scientists think that the de-extinction of mammoths would be extremely benefits for tundra ecosystems, since their escrements would fertilize large areas in short time

The setup for the movie is so depressing. The mammoth's family was slaughtered by humans and he is heading towards the cold in the opposite direction all the other animals are going to be away from everyone. The sloth was abandoned by his family. The saber-toothed tiger betrayed his kind to save his friends. They all risk their lives to return a human child to his people, the most dangerous species on the planet. Four dodos are boiled to death and about a dozen fall off a cliff. Another saber-toothed tiger is impaled by icicles. That is one twisted movie.
Personally I think that Manny was going in the opposite direction to all the other animals because he wanted to die. As all the animals said, going south was the only way to survive from the cold and starvation. Manny knew that, but he continued to go north because he didn't want to live anymore
Heh, everyone arguing the mammoth cloning reality just reminds me that my first English class in college our first essay assignment was picking a side for discussing the ethics and viability of cloning mammoths! I wonder if that’s where anyone else is coming from….
8:06 the thing saber tooth tigers or saber tooth cats are entirely their own species and there was a larger saber tooth in South America known as Smilodon Popular and now for smilodon fatalis are only in piles upon piles of skeletons in the La Brea tar pits in Los Anglos, California.

29:07 makes me emotional 🥹 when, the baby reunited with his father and the other men.
It's interesting to think about Manny's backstory, he's bitter/heartbroken about the loss of his family but he understands that the humans needed to hunt to survive. In the end while it's mentioned later(in another movie) he's probably scared to start over again he was able to find peace in a sense thanks to returning the baby. These three are a weird pack/herd but they bring out the best of each other when it comes to their journey to help a baby. Funny enough I've heard people say this is kind of like this one anime movie called Tokyo Godfather were three homeless people struggling with their own personal issues try to return a baby they found left alone.
Since you mentioned anime it'd be interesting if you tried Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous it's a 12 episode anime for a manga that's still being worked on. It'll likely never get a sequel anime(took them 3 years just to make this) but it's worth a watch. The studio also made the anime for Beastars & Trigun Stampede, animation might look a little odd but it works(especially given how everyone looks in the manga) & the effects a beautiful.
People: I would love to bring back prehistoric creatures

I really love and adore this movie i use to watch this movie all the time. My favorite character is Diego the smilodon he is a very good character. You watch the rest of the ice age movie franchise those movies are amazing too.

Scrat is a squirrel/rat hybrid. Originally he the name was being spelled squrat (combined squirrel and rat) but Blue Sky couldn't use it as it is copywrighted.

This movie is a very good story about Chosen families. Diego originally belonged with his pack where we would ofc assume he'd belong to. However he stumbled upon another kind of life with this group of different animals and he found home amongst them, others who really love him and accept him. It's lovely and so important and accurate and this movie is 20 years old man!! You CAN choose your own family. If the one you were born into or otherwise ended up in doesn't accept you, there are others who will and you can find them 💗 stay strong
About the humans not speaking: The way their faces look (especially the dad's) they might be Neanderthals, who (very likely) did in fact not yet speak like we do. :) They likely had some sort of communication past gestures and the like though, simply because they were coordinated enough to hunt large mammals and develop special types of stone tools. In fact, today it's assumed that the parts of our brain responsible for stuff like engineering etc. are likely leftovers from our Neanderthal ancestors. :D (Source: I'm an archaeologist irl and ice age & human evolution is one of my favourite topics of interest :3)

The part where Sid looks at all the extinct animals and objects in the ice cave reminds me of Luray Caverns.
This franchise should’ve ended as a trilogy along with the shorts. The 4th movie has some decent moments, but that’s where the franchise began to understate its welcome, but the fifth movie was worse since they were completely out of ideas. :(
I could be sure that Blue Sky Studios originally intended Ice Age to end as a trilogy with Dawn Of The Dinosaurs as the last movie since Manny’s story comes full circle, but the soulless higher ups of 20th Century Fox forced them to make more sequels in order to buy the studio, like if Blue Sky’s non-Ice Age movies like Rio, Epic, or The Peanuts Movie weren’t enough😐😑
To me the 20th Century Fox higher ups were the blame for Blue Sky’s decline as a studio, and has gotten worse when Ice Age 5: Collision Course bombed at the box office spectacularly causing Blue Sky’s bankruptcy, even though afterwards, they continued to make non-Ice Age movies like The Peanuts Movie which was honestly the best animated movie adaptation of bringing Charles Shultz’ cartoon characters into 3D animation and staying faithful to the original source material without completely modernizing it like other animation studios fail to do with some other adaptations of the original cartoons bringing them into the big screen. We also have Ferdinand which was a decent enough movie, and Spies In Disguise (the downfall of Will Smith as the future sexual assault on Chris Rock😞) and Tom Holland was also great, but sadly bombed at the Box Office spectacularly and causing
Blue Sky Studios to its death as a studio, and when Disney bought 20th Century Fox leading to *MORE* problems, Disney also ended up shutting down Blue Sky Studios, cancelling their next animation project NIMONA which’s an LGTB movie (which then got saved by Netflix) it made the biggest fans of Blue Sky including me upset and began throwing a lot of criticism and controversies at Disney for shutting down the studio. :(

This is such a Wonderful family film! I never seen those back in tears when I was a kid. And I kept on asking myself will there be another one. I know a lot of people have different opinions about the last films but I would say just do it for the sake of it. But it’s your choice.
3rd film is my favourite one. But I love anyone with sids grandma in.
Only watch up to the third, the series nose dives after that.
