- Watercolor is a beautiful and versatile medium and there are many ways to add different textures to your artworks. In this video I test molding paste, cling film (plastic wrap), salt, scratching and scraping tools and stamping with both homemade stamps and wodden blocks.

I look forward to your texture effects. I've seen most of these techniques before (though not stamping), but you seek and appreciate more subtle effects than other artists have, so that makes your tutorial unique.
Glad you liked it, there are very few completely original ideas but these were things I’d not really used before!
I found that different brands of paint in the same color will have the salt reacting completely differently. You are really inspiring here and I have a billion projects fighting to get on my 'To Do' list after this video!!!
I don't have too many duplicates from different brands but might have to try that!
What a great article. I decided this week to have a go at collage and mixed media so this appeared just at the right time! Off to make some textured sheets now, Sepia is one of my favourite pigments, along with Indigo. Thanks for this - nice to hear the word 'canny' as a North Shields lass!
That’s great - so glad it came at the right time :) I did wonder when editing that but whether anyone would know what I meant! My family are from just south of the river :)
I love this Lou! I have only seen a couple of these techniques before so very interesting to see the others. The finished picture is a piece of art work in itself 👍☺️
Thanks so much!
Fun! Love the salt effects.
Thanks! Yes - I think I’ll be using that in future projects!
Great video and experiments, thanks, Lou!
Loved it Lou. So many textures to try, very excited to see how they all turn out.
Thanks so much 😊
Wow what a fun video! I love the fine salt the most I think but they were all interesting to watch. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great demos here, Lou……loved this, Thank you !
💕💕
You are so welcome!
I use the stiff brush to stipple over a dry wash. I just dip ends of bristles in paint and holding brush upright I dab away.
Thank you! I might have to try it that way
Hi Lou. I am new to watercolor and I really loved this exercise. So many great ideas. I also like just the idea of trying different techniques on the same page, in the same color so the results can be compared. Thank you!
You're welcome - I wish you well with your painting!
I loved this. I must do it. Thank you
Fun to try different textures…I especially like the results from the coarse salt, stamping & the plastic wrap or Saran Wrap as it is called here🇨🇦..it is actually a brand name
Thanks - Saran wrap :) I had a feeling it was something like that!
AWESOME!!!!
🤩
Fabulous and so different. Love all the experiments!
Thank you! Cheers!
Really interesting,thank you!❤
You're welcome 😊
such a wonderful tutorial, so helpful ☺☺☺
Glad it was helpful!
On top of your wet wash place a small piece of cardboard with ridges down. Leave until dry. The stripes will be light but not stark paper!
Great video 🙌 I've tried the salt and found that it stuck to the paper a bit, I'd like to try grains of rice next time. Looking forward to your next video 😁
Same.
Someone I saw mentioned silica gel has a similar effect - but I wouldn’t want any of it getting lost - my dog tends to eat anything that falls on the floor.
I would have the same problem. 🐕
Hi Lou 👋. For the salt experiment, I think if you use a lot of water you will get better results. It's just a hunch, though. You can get really nice effects with granulating paints.
True!!
@@BB-nz5sk Thanks!
Thanks, I think I will try it with different amounts of water and see how the effects change :)
@@LouDavis Have fun!
Awesome techniques! The spiral would look great with different colors 🌈😍. I follow another artist on Instagram who uses cookie cutters to create designs. Thank you for sharing your art with us. 😊
Ooh that’s interesting - thanks!
