The world is a better place for having Elvis Costello in it.
Amen! 👏
I remember singing Oliver's Army on the School stage in the UK. It was raining so everyone came in and we were messing around on stage with the mic. When I got to the chorus all my friends rushed up and joined in. Great memories courtesy of Elvis C.
@@thesuncollective1475 nice one....
Absolutely.
"Keep the inner idiot alive."
* my wife nudges me and says: * "See? Elvis would be proud of you."
LOL! ^__^
Seconded
Elvis Costello , the beloved entertainer...
I really love that it’s obvious that Stephen and Elvis are mates, good buds.
Elvis is such an eloquent speaker.
Stephen thank you for doing justice to this incredible artist and awesome human!
Man, I'm so glad he said all that about PLAY!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
I have greatly enjoyed singing along with Elvis since the first album.
I've lost my range during covid, there was nothing to sing about.
It's going to take a lot of work to get it back it that's possible.
Ahh, the fiendish friend
the F chord.
His lovely wife Diana Krall may have helped with a few of these chords. Or maybe Russell Malone, aka bad ass jazz guitar player extraordinaire??
Or, he's just Elvis Costello!! 🙀
you don't have to barre the F major chord, use 4 fingers on C A F C and thumb the F and that works for all barre major chords
'Keep the inner idiot alive'....never more truer words been spoken.
Isnt Elvis Costello married to Diana Krall ? 💜🦋🎶
Long time. ♥️
Yes
My Dad had no respect for me being a musician because, as he said, you "play" music, so it wasn't real work. He never saw me spend years dragging a refrigerator-sized bass speaker cabinet around to gigs.
Glass records are cool. I have a few from the 30s-40s
An amazing Birkonian, had the privilege of knowing his da RIP and his Nan ,Molly RIP...keep doing what you do best ,Sir...peace and love from the wirral....E
Great to see Elvis still around
He remains very lucid (he's a year younger than me!) 😅😎❤
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I’m going to play like a child today!!!! That’s wonderful advice.
He’s right. As a drummer I wanted to learn a few chords. Over ten years later it’s my favourite instrument to relax and entertain myself. His autobiography is a good read. I’m listening to it as an audiobook at the moment. It’s read by him and as poetic as his songs.
Me too! Then I realized that no matter how hard I tried I'd never be able to play chords on drums.
@@BrianBrayMedia just read my comment and it doesn’t make sense. I didn’t mention I took up guitar and play daily now.
‘…and highly flammable!” Love Colbert.
He's one of my favorite artists of all time behind Picasso and Michelangelo. He sounds better lol
Yeah, Michelangelo really sucked on the electric guitar. He couldn't even play bass. :)
For a humour laden treat try fellow Birkonian band ...Half man half Biscuit..the Trumpton riots...
@@EdEditz ya, Michelangelo never could master the F chord!
"...every day I write the book..."
😎🙏
Did they name that chord after the string of expletives that spew forth when trying to learn it?
You don’t have to play all six strings at once. It is still an F major if you do 1 3 3 2 or 3 2 1 1 or some combination of the two.
Technically it's a barre chord and your index finger *should* extend across all six strings, BUT your three other fingers are already covering three of the strings in the middle, so you can just barre the first two strings and then (shh, don't tell) hit the F on the bottom E with your (ghasp) thumb.
I totally get the hatred for the F chord.
F the F chord.
So, the bastards say, “I can’t do the F chord, I’m just going to F up the world.” Makes sense of everything. Love EC: ‘Shipbuilding’ still makes me cry.
Me too and I still live here in Birkhenhead, Cammel Lairds the local Shipyard has gone from strength to strength despite the E U ripping us off...
@@eamonnclabby7067 I tried to play it all the way through after writing that. Got a couple of bars into the chorus and lost it again. 😢 The country seems even worse now than under Thatcher. Hope you’re well and staying safe. ✊🏼❤️🕊⚖️
@@clarewillison9379 Bless you Clrare...please let me know when you break through...I, mindful of the great line by Lennon and Mc McCartney...I have to admit it, s getting better ( Macca,a line..) ..it couldn't get much worse..( Lennon, RIP) , try to keep things in perspective, whilst the Westminster bubble literally fighting over cake cheese and wine, our enemies mass on the border aided by their useful idiots...on a positive note/ chord...apols...try DAGA in quick succession, see what happens..peace and love from the wirral
@@eamonnclabby7067 😘✊🏼❤️🕊⚖️
Love his relaxing way of talking about playing guitar (I mastered the F!) and songwriting. Yes, the songs come to you, that is so true.
Love that nugget of wisdom, Elvis! 💕 Thank you!
Lots of homespun wisdom here in Birkhenhead...he is from a long line of talented people in his family...we are very proud of him here on the Wirral...Daniel Craig aka pops back to the wirral to see family and friends...no one bothers him or his family...cheers / slainte..E
F-chord is easy compared to the B-chord!
It's called the B chord because it's a bitch to play.
Seriously though. C and F barred are so commonly used and they are incredibly hard. Coming back to the guitar after a few years, those two chords were hands down the most work to learn again.
Elvis brilliantly done
Quite agree ,but then again apart from him being a genius, he is also from Birkhenhead, peace and love from Birkhenhead....E
Hahahaha! Love him
In Ireland we say Cos tel low, still sounds better how Americans say it
Historic interview. I grew up in Monterey CA. Monterey jazz festival was beloved. Diana Krall who I haven't heard in years really emerged for us. Elivs long beloved. Beautiful match.🌹
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
Thanks for having such a proper interview!
"Those Beetles (double E)" is a very underrated joke, made me smile
I didn't even catch that joke at first, very subtle
Double E flammable beetles?! Mercy sakes alive!! I've always found a B or C plenty. A DD is nice too, though maybe pushing it (nooo, not the sweaterfront) a titch.
I love Stephen mentioning "Slow drag with Josephine". And the end with the band playing Ascension Day, one of my favourite Costello songs!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
One of my favorite parts of the Beatles movie was when the police came and were introduced to us. The movie was so moving!
Nice one ...peace and love from Merseyside....E
He’s right that if you can learn 4 chords on the guitar 🎸 you can play a thousand songs. Most songs don’t have more than 4. A few have 5 or even 6. But the majority don’t.
The old Shellac records were made from Beetles? I didn’t know that. Vinyl isn’t. Since I like the Beatles,
I wouldn’t buy any Records made of Shellac. How Bizarre is that fact?
Elvis Costello is a plethora of Musical knowledge!
This is why Elvis is King~!
Amazing artist and storyteller...One of my all time favorites!
As a guitar player, I agree... Play like a child , no matter how much technique you acquire through the years ..and start young, for the human hand is not designed to contort itself to play guitar ..Play to please the inner idiot.. if he's liking it, that'll bring everyone else along ..
check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
OMG. I've played guitar for decades. Went to uni for lead jazz sax. Hitting a bar F is still a pain :D Love you.
Legend
Or play F(M7#11) as an inflection point, and hang on it with a clean trebly tone. Takes all four left-hand fingers but no bar, and works if you can deal with the jazz/jangle-pop sound.
... or they become bass players
What a treasure Elvis Costello is. Always loved him. Named my cat after his song Goon Squad 💚
Phenomenal advice.
Genius.
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
Why have I just realized Elvis is not American...what's wrong with me?
It's ok, a lot of people don't realize he's British because he sings in an exaggerated soulful way that hides his accent, and he's deeply influenced by American music.
The Beatles on shellac. Ha! Wouldn’t that be something
It's guys like him that make me feel like a hack artist, lol! Gotta keep trying.
Yes to alive inner idiots who play!! Seriousness is a disease that turns people into fanatics.
I love this!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
cool!
Hate the F cord.
@thelateshowwithstephencolbert - dig your stuff, but it would be REALLY helpful if you could label this, and all other interviews you upload too, as '1 of 3', '2 of 3' ,'3 of 3' etc.
I believe most people would agree?
Going through F chord struggle right now... 😆
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
This guy is still alive? Wow!?!?
Of course Stephen knows the Magnificent Hurt. He is married to Evie. 💙
Costello ...I once knew a Costello ...found him at the bottom of the rabbit 🐇 hole 🕳
Boom. So right there!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
My favourite wordsmith! 👍
.i have a lovely epiphone sg next to me. a small fender amp. my playing is a joke but a make a nice noise that makes me smile
When it comes to rock n roll the British are just untouchable.
I just learned a cheated F chord, never learned the normal F. Also, Elvis Costello is so funny in such an outrageous way. He always says the most ridiculous things with such a calm voice
So many tonal contrasts. I was just listening to Oliver's Army and Dancing Queen, the former inspired by the latter's sound as well as a dark tale of sending poor young men to war. So many sweet sounds accompanying dark words.
What was he telling him at the start?
He was saying "You don't actually blow, they just call it that".
Love Elvis Costello! Stephen, not so much…
WONNN
The quickest way I learned to play punk rock in the early 80s was barre chords- E, Em, A, and Am... later came the 7th chords, and then I learned the open chords. F hasn't been a problem since!
Sometimes when genius walks amongst us......we often fail to see it!
What a beautiful soalfull man
Love his chattiness.
I love Elvis Costello's music. We saw him at the Riv in Chicago and ended up leaving early because every song was a ballad, he didn't play any of his hits n we were bummed. Thankfully we have CDs lol.
I got to see him a few years ago, just before the pandemic, with the Imposters and he played so many of his old songs. It WAS wonderful! At the time though my favorite recording was Wise Up Ghost (with the Roots), and I was wishing he would play one of those songs 😂. You're so right - so glad I have the CD! 🎶🎶🎶
He plays concerts like that because there are huge fans (like myself) who actually prefer his later stuff. Don't get me wrong-I love his first albums, but I am OBSESSED with the ballads on King of America, Imperial Bedroom, Blood & Chocolate & many others.
Fake fans who can't appreciate his genius, leave the concept tickets for us
Quite the story teller. Elvis is definitely one of a kind in this crazy world.
yes
What a lovely cool guy!

Mr. Colbert, I believe to have endured quite the weird/awkward exchange with Mr. Costello. The whole interview was like improv, filled with non sequiturs. You’d ask Him something or make some pertinent comment/observation, and He would just… go all over the space unorganized like a deflating balloon. The entire exchange turned out well for the mere reason that you’re such a seasoned exceptional interviewer. Hats off to you, Mr. Colbert.
Found the guy who hates Elvis Costello and likes Steven Colbert. Now if I could only find the person who hates them both, and then we'll have a full set
@@rattyeely Absolutely love His music, but He proved to be quite difficult to interview. There's much brilliance in His music, undisputedly.
I still struggle with Colberts interviews where he saw he hates the English and that they are “ all bastards” ! And then he puts on the happy face with his many English guests !! A bit two faced to say the least .
It's ok, the English feel the same way
When did he say that?
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 he was on a pbs series called “faces of America “ around 2010, if you Google what he says about the English it will come up,
@jamiem8680 Ha nah I really don't care
I am English and I watch his show for his obvious fetish for my countrymen.
You yanks can be cute at time 🤣
