I once read (I think on his IMDB page) that Amir was highly respected for his filmmaking in his native Iran because he was one of the few people who knew anything about it and could help other people learn about it. Apparently, due to the state of the Iranian film industry, audiences there were much more forgiving if movies turned out like Hollywood Cop or Samurai Cop. If you watch other films like Ebrahim Golestan's The Brick and The Mirror you might see what directors like Golestan and Shervan were dealing with. Shervan probably just didn't know how to go beyond his way of filmmaking to make things for a more polished and savvy American audience.
pashwayar That's a good point. Maybe what I read was wrong. Kiarostami is a miracle in his own right, but I'm not familiar enough with his early work to know how well it compares, but I do know he started directing films later than Shervan and Golestan so maybe that has something to do with it.
