    I know i'm late to this, but one important information i didn't see mentioned. Kanata has a condition where she is slowly losing her hearing and she actually had to take time off last year to re-adjust/re-learn to how to sing after she went completely deaf in 1 ear. She joined hololive to try being a singer/idol 1 last time before her time runs out.

    The video for this song was premiered directly after Coco's last stream. Kanata not only made this cover song but also composed and wrote the lyrics for an original song for her group in the weeks leading up to this.
    I'd say Kanata is one of the best singers in Hololive and definitely one with the biggest vocal range.
    The nickname gorilla comes from her 50 kg grip strength - something that Coco regularly utilities by letting her open chars

    Oh boy, I have a very big number of video to recover, but, to add some info:
    * Yup, Kanata and Coco live together. They are friends from before joining hololive. There aren't an exception, other friends joined hololive together (Korone/Okayu and Fubuki/Mio are two well know).
    * The "gorilla" for Kanata is a meme born from the fact that she IRL is very strong, with a very high grip power compared to the average japanese girl (for what is know, she grow up in a rural zone).
    * The song as english CC, and the lyric hits hard knowing the context.
    * Kanata was playing the piano, and has released it on the day of Coco's retiring/"graduation".
    * Coco's retiring was after another big hurting moment for Kanata (but more a weeb one, her favorite idol/singer marriage).
    * Kanata has basically taken care of Coco's fans for a good week after. She has basically worked double the normal the month of Coco's retire day, including writing a full song for Coco graduation/retiring stream in less than 1 month.
    * In general, Kanata's life story is an interesting story itself. She is a very talented singer, but has an health condition that block her from being a full-time singer, in the start of her vtuber career she wasn't singing since two years, and restarted singing only after a good push from hololive management and Coco itself.

    • @ravenclawreacts
      @ravenclawreacts  3 года назад +6

      I checked out the lyrics, and can only imagine how much harder it hits knowing the whole backstory. Kanata sounds like an amazingly hardworking, musically talented and kind soul! Definitely keen to find out more about her. It's kinda fascinating that they mix their IRLs and online personas so much like this.

    • @ODDnanref
      @ODDnanref 2 года назад

      I don't think they were friends from before hololive. Coco lived alone, and only after both met in hololive did they move in together.

  • @nucl3ar_snake
    @nucl3ar_snake 3 года назад +61

    Ok, this was unexpected, careful with this particular rabbit hole, it's nigh impossible to crawl out of. Kaigai nikis assemble!
    The whole 'gorilla' bit is referencing Kanata's 50kg IRL grip strength and is kind of a running joke at this point. The thing that I'm always impressed by Hololive's songs is that they're singing in-character. I can't sing to save my life with my own voice, so singing _while_ doing another voice seems pretty ridiculous.

      So I finally got around to typing 'kanata gorilla' into search and lmao I love her. Her speaking voice is cute too, but mostly she just seems like a really fun, positive person.
      I'm also super impressed with anyone who can sing in character. Thought it might've been a crazy unique talent of Yui/Toyosaki from K-On! but apparently not..

    Hololive Productions was on uncharted waters back then when dealing with recruiting, training, and debuting their talents: the earlier generations were, in effect, individually trained and then let out to the world and had little personal connections. Things changed for Gen 3 (AKA Fantasy) where the talents were given time to interact with each other to develop a family bond, and this bond was at its strongest in Gen 4, consisting of Kanata, Coco, Watame, Towa, and Luna: when Coco announced her retirement the most heartbroken ones were her gen-mates. Watame also did a emotional song thanking her gen-mates and as a tribute to Coco, called "Melody For You", which is worth a listen: like Kanata's own tribute "Knots of Miracles" the names of the gen-mates were incorporated in the lyrics, both Japanese and English versions. Kanata, however, wrote the song and lyrics for "Knots" and is also quite a capable producer, even hampered by a degenerative disease which took her hearing in one ear.

    I saw the title and thought "Well, I don't know this song" and anyway wanted to give it a try, and the second she started singing I thought "I DO know this song!". Such a surprise! For those that are interested, the original song is by the band Supercell, first track of the album "Today Is A Beautiful Day" (The band and the album are really named in english, but the song is 終わりへ向かう始まりの歌) The band is one of those projects where really one person is doing all the composing and carries the essence, the man is called Ryo. For those who are familiar with Vocaloid world, Supercell is one of the first bands that used Hatsune Miku as main singer in classic songs as "The World Is Mine", "Love Is War", "BlackRock Shooter", "Melt". Outside the Vocaloid world their biggest hit must be "Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari" used as the first ending of the anime Bakemonogatari. The piano is very present in almost all their songs and many have this dramatic and powerful feel to it. Loved the emotional lens of the analysis and the mirrored piano (lol)

    • @ravenclawreacts
      @ravenclawreacts  3 года назад +9

      Thanks for the extra notes! I checked out the original by supercell and wow the two versions are pretty distinct. Love both - interestingly, the original goes at a faster tempo, has less pronounced pauses (more on the beat) and breathiness, so comes off less emotionally intense. Also if forced to choose the cleaner singer.. gotta say Kanata comes out on top.
      I'm a total stranger to the Vocaloid world - wiki tells me it's voice synth tech with characters??
      Also I feel I should give you a medal for noticing the mirrored piano 😂 Left the reverse on in OBS and watching it back now.. yeah it's trippy haha

    • @Yungblut
      @Yungblut 3 года назад +4

      @@ravenclawreacts Ah yes, Vocaloid is a human voice sampled that can be operated to sing any syllables (if are in the voicebank). At the begining they sold the voices with fantasy names attached to it, but the japanese voicebanks also give them a "mascot character" to each voice and then the popularity of those charaters exploded, illustrations, animated videos, music, coreography, mostly created by consumers. They even do "live" concerts with holograms (and a real live band that must follow the prerecorded voice track). Like the band Gorillaz but the voices are also virtual. Google Chrome did a good summary: ruclips.net/video/MGt25mv4-2Q/видео.html

    oh boy. as much as I LOVE that you're reacting to and analyzing stuff from vtubers and Hololive, that's a big torrential firehose you're about to drink from if you're not careful.
    That said, beautiful analysis. There are actually translated captions for that video, so I wonder how your analysis/perception might have been different with the meaning given form in words, especially given how much meaning you were able to derive just from musicality, tone, breath, direction, etc.

    • @ravenclawreacts
      @ravenclawreacts  3 года назад +35

      Okay, going straight to the CC...
      Annd I'm back. I feel there's so much more additional context I won't get because I wasn't present for the entire backstory, but.. wow. The lyrics compound the pain by a significant factor. It reads like she's singing to Coco about some incredibly hard times they had to go through together - or that she had to support Coco through. (Where the music gets most intense is when Kanata's singing about a 'sad burden' someone - I guess Coco - can't bear anymore.) And that Coco's graduation was super unexpected? But then there's that vague hint of putting on a brave face and reiterating that they'll never face things alone and will always have each other.
      All that said. I realised this was released on the day of her graduation, which would've been... ugh.
      Also it's interesting all the warnings about how deep this rabbithole goes lol

    12:30 Yes, she wanted to say goodbye without any regrets but a lot of hololive members broke down in the end and before they were at the graduation event for Coco.
    The scene where Coco meets her fellow generation 4 idols, was highly memorable for the emotions being exchanged.
    Kanata lived with Coco but was the one who held on the strongest, and seeing her break down suddenly and unexpectedly when she held it in for a long time, was pretty powerful.

      hololive is like real life slice of anime I discovered it early 2020 so I know pretty much every girl. They are all _super_ talented and hardworking.
      I never thought I will watch vtubers before 2020. When I first watched them, I didn't think I'd continue watching them I thought it'd be one time thing but then I got addicted. What made me stay is how close they are to each other and their friendship, their pranks towards each other, how much they care about each other.
      In those days 4th gen (which Kanata is member of) were pretty new and I didn't know much about them so I used to watch Aqua (second gen), Matsuri (first gen) and other girls.
      You should check them out they all are really awesome.
      If you don't mind please consider reacting to - "Story of Hoshimachi Suisei" (0th gen hololive) : story about a girl who wanted to become vtuber and started solo but she had to face so many challenges in her journey and how she became a successful holo member now.
      "lunar memories - Moona birthday project" (hololive id branch) - it's an appreciation video made by her fans on her birthday and it's so wholesome, this will give you an idea how far holo fandom goes to show their love for the talents. (Moona also made a song that makes me tear up to show how much she loves her fan and released on same day isn't it amazing?)
      I really love watching your k-on reactions and I enjoy them. If you have time please check them out I guarantee you will _love_ them. At least check them out on your free time if you can't react to them, they're really well made vids you won't regret watching them.

    what a nice reaction. This song was made by supercell's personel named Ryo in their album (today is the beatiful day) back in 2011, the song that covered by this little angle Kanata is the prolog used for the album, the only difference is their tempo, the original tempo just slightly a bit faster than Kanata's, because this is the prolog for the next fast tempo song in the album (kimi no shiranai monogatari). but Kanata's cover tempo really lovely and really suit how the song being told to her listeners.

    • @ravenclawreacts

      I did also listen to the original afterwards - you're right, the switch up in tempo really changes the mood and lends itself more to Kanata's message. As a result, the piano accompaniment is also slightly different in tone. Really amazing how the cover can set itself apart like that from the original.

      @@ravenclawreacts
      I may be completely wrong but from what I have seen there are two parts to it.
      The first one is the fact that some companies (like Hololive) are kind of mimicking idol culture, having only female Vtubers, only some of them sporadically collaborating with guys and most avoiding talking about guys regularly. This together with girls just having some good skinship makes fans ship them and in return the vtubers exaggerating a bit because that's what the fans want. Not to say the Hololive girls aren't close to each other and some of them are not bisexual or lesbian (I do believe a couple of them have said they are) but they act it up a bit and the fans sometimes see more into it that there actually is.
      Nonetheless the other big company (Nijisanji) is not doing the idol thing and they have a more relaxed stance when it comes to what their talents can do and say, and there we still have a lot of both guys and girls that have said they are part of the gay community. I have a theory that this is due to the anonymity being a Vtuber gives. An example is Tomoe (one of the girls that form Crossick), she has said in the past that becoming a Vtuber was a blessing for her because it gave her a place for her to be herself, she was unable to talk with her family or real life friends about her sexuality and fetishes but with Vtubing she found an audience that actually likes and relates to that part of her.
      Btw, for another "old married couple" besides Crossick I will also recommend "Gunkan" (Gundou Mirei and Kanda Shoichi), they are a girl and a guy so it is not all just gay people... although Gundou is in fact bisexual x)

    I don't know if you have listened to it or not but on Coco's 2-year anniversary Kanata released a cover of "Watashi e'" by supercell which is the epilogue of the album this song is from. I think it serves as a reply to this song. From what I know Kanata is a big fan of yanaginagi, who was the vocalist for supercell. It probably means a lot for her to cover these two songs. Kanata has had a tough life, being a music lover and someone who loves singing but is deaf in one ear. She would have gave up on music and singing if she has not gotten into hololive and have so many people supporting her now. Can't imagine how devastated she was during this incident losing one of her beloved partners. Please give it a listen if you feel like it.

    A bit late but about the Gorilla part, Kanata has been shown to have above average grip strength. Like, above average even for adult men. It's just a funny meme and she likes to play along with it too by saying "this world is too weak" or by accidentally crushing potatoes.

      @@ravenclawreacts The recent patch for Minecraft added this cute little aquatic creature called an axolotol. They spawned in different colors but blue was by far the rarest with only like a .002% chance. So a lot of Minecraft streamers were building elaborate farms to breed them to get blue ones. Kanata was a bit… obsessed… trying to get one and had really bad luck so she resorted to some desperate measures. Luckily she finally got one. Hololive is an extremely funny rabbit hole of comedians who claim to be idols
