Been a Pokemon fan my whole life, a VGC fan for a year, and am starting to compete just now! Perfect time for me to find your channel. You are going to grow fast
@@ImLeShoe Im excited for both of us to get better in VGC! Thank you for the kind words!
Same here! Just started yesterday but followed for so long but hoping to finally jump in
The damage calculator is my vice. I've never used it myself and just relied on material put out by VGC content creators, website recommendation or my own guestimation 😂.. but like you said, gotta learn to use it if I wanna be one of the bests
@@TheRichBelize it's tough! I'll definitely need some more expertise from a pro player when I make a video on it!
@@PrimordialEspyVGC ill be looking out for the video
I started playing Pokemon showdown it was so fun thanks from the bottom of my heart ❤️❤️❤️
@@GarethKrebs-i1m Thank you for watching! I'm glad showdown has been fun for you!
I'm impressed Very high quality video! I'm glad you're giving more people motivation to get into competitive Pokemon.
Most of this video used very beginner friendly terms to attract new players to the scene, which I like to see.
Though, there are some things I'd like to clarify:
1:58 Win condition is not when something has to happen, despite the word "condition". It's used to define a role of a Pokemon on your team. But unlike traditional teambuilding roles like Support and Sweeper, a win condition is a Pokemon you feel like has a good matchup against the team you're currently facing. Knowing your win condition during a match, you try your best to keep it long enough for it to either win you the game or at least accomplish what it's supposed to do.
4:10 Speed control means more like trying to find ways to make your Pokemon move first and your opponents move last. I'm sure that's what you wanted to say but I would usually think of "speed of a match" as the number of turns the match takes. Other famous examples of this include Prankster Quash Murkrow and Torkoal + Chlorophyll After You Lilligant.
6:08 Restricted Pokemon are Legendaries with base stats above 600. The only exception to this rule so far is Regigigas. Necrozma, Calyrex and Terapagos are restricted because their other forms are classified as restricted. Cosmog and Cosmoem get the same treatment because they evolve into restricted Pokemon. Ultra Beasts and Paradox Pokemon are considered Sub-Legendaries and are banned separately from Restricted Legendaries. Other legendaries with BST equal to or under 600 like Landorus and Urshifu are always legal.
6:42 Mythicals are interesting because they've never been allowed in VGC events until Gen 9. The reason was because they're usually only given out as gift Pokemon. People who didn't get the gifts would be at a disadvantage if Mythicals were in the pool of usable Pokemon.
8:46 Ik you're simplifying for everyone but I would maybe include a "x1.5" as text on the screen for everyone to see how much of an impact this has.
9:11 Speed still matters within a priority bracket. It's the difference between you setting up Tailwind with Prankster Tornadus and your opponent using Taunt to stop your Tailwind with Prankster Whimsicott. The scenario is hard to explain for beginners but I think it's best explained as the Speed of a move, then Speed of the Pokemon.
10:10 Just wanted to say that a roll will never do more damage than originally calculated. It can only be lower. Otherwise, good job on explaining this advanced concept :>
11:05 I really wanted you to say the "can tank a lot of hits" part and the "has a decent speed part" separately since Bulky Pivots like Incineroar play a very different role than Fast Pivots like Dragapult. Bulky pivots want to tank the hit before they switch out to get a teammate in safely while fast pivots want to do something, then switch out to a Pokemon that can tank a hit for it.
11:30 I don't think I would put the word Tank in a VGC context because it's usually a bad strategy in Doubles simply because it takes too long to get going. Bulky fits better imo because they fulfill more roles than just tanking hits and slowly wearing your opponents down. Most meta bulky Pokemon don't have crazy high raw statistical bulk. They need just enough to tank a couple hits and take advantage of their ability, moves and typing to accomplish something like Pivoting/Utility. (like Incineroar) or Outputting damage (like Palafin)
Overall, I really enjoyed this video, especially on a new growing channel. Best of luck!!
@@NotHexaaaa Thank you! Lots of great info in this comment!
Your videos are great for beginners. You break everything down, and simplify everything
@@westsidemike-sv1xm that's what I'm hoping to do! I want to make it easier to start playing VGC! 😁 Thank you for the kind words!
Great video, Espy! One thing I wanted to add is about spread moves: a spread move’s damage will be reduced by 0.75 for each target, and do full damage if there is only one target. For example, Rock Slide is usually a 75 BP move. However, in VGC when Rock Slide hits both opposing Pokémon, the damage is “spread” between both Pokemon so that Rock Slide effectively has a BP of ~56 for each target. You can see this damage reduction in a Damage Calculator if the Pokémon you’re running a damage calc for knows a spread move: just change the setting from “Doubles” to “Singles” and the damage being done from that spread move will increase. Hope this helps!
I recently found an irl friend who plays TCG who taught me to play while I taught them VGC and these videos couldn’t have come at a better time!
@@BarrettC9 I'm glad I could help! Enjoy the TCG too! It's lots of fun!
I came in knowing every one of these terms and still watched through the entire video because I love the way you articulate the info and I felt like it could help me better help my friends who are new to VGC. Keep up the great videos!
Side note you forgot the most important VGC term of them all: the world champ difference
@@jtspeed19 I'm glad I could help keep the terms at a more beginner level! And to understand World Champ Difference, just look up a picture of Wolfe. 😤
I’m not sure if this is more of a singles term but Role Compression is where you have one pokémon that can do a bunch of things that you’d normally need a bunch of different pokemon for. Like if your team needs both speed control and a weather setter Tornadus has you covered on both with tailwind and rain dance instead of having to use different mons for each.
@@michelleslay2701 That is a smart one to add! Thank you!
Bro your vids are really high quality I'm surprised they haven't blown up more.

Thank you for this. I’m not completely new to vgc I’ve just been experimenting to have a solid team. I’m happy for this regulation with no legendaries. I just feel they are too much of an easy win. Great video
Think only term missing was Wall
A Pokémon can wall part or all of a team due to a favorable match up it has with it
Easy example is a ghost type taking on an all Fighting type team being immune to there Stab
Other is Hoodra that with it's great Def can wall a team of mainly physical attackers
Hope I explained that right

Another one is psyspam. Just means teams that want to spam expanding force next to indeedee bc it does stupid damage
@@cblang8115 great term to include, getting a lot of usage in Reg H for sure! A video on team archetypes like that is coming in the future!
Could you explain “Proc” (idk how it’s spelled). Heard a few instances like “That caused the weakness policy to proc.” I assume it means “activate,” but what on earth does proc stand for??
Excellent video and explanations :)))
@@GreatGatzB Thank you! Proc actually stands for Programmed Random Occurence and it is when something has a chance to activate upon certain circumstances. Either through use or through being hit or other examples. Some things proc more often like weakness policy "proccing" when the pokemon is hit with a super effective move. But other things have much lower chances, like the item quick claw only being procced 20% of the time every turn. Hope this helps!
No mention of incineroar during the section at 4:38 made me equally parts upset and happy
@@EclipseEH incineroar fits into like 50 VGC Terms so I have to choose wisely when to include him. 😅

Could you make a guide on Showdown? I get really confused when I tried using it.
@@viniciussousa9791 I'll add it to the list of videos!
Really good video, but what's HAX?
@@Hurb6900 thank you! Hax is a shortened form of Hacks and it is usually used to refer to when something with a low percentage of happening effects your Pokemon. Like if an opposing Pokemon burns your Pokemon using flamethrower, a 10% chance of happening. Or if the opposing Pokemon lands a critical hit on you. Both of those are "Hax" situations!

Maybe Positioning
@@profelu1919 A good one to add! Positioning involves putting certain pokemon on your side of the field to counter your opponents pokemon defensively (like putting a fairy Pokemon against a Hydreigon) or to take advantage of your opponent offensively (like putting in Miraidon against Kyogre). Positioning always changes during the match and relies on planning against your opponents moves a few steps ahead of them!
